So alright, I guess this guild needed at least one thread like this. Post in here about bands other than DT.

For instance, I know that DT got me into the holy genre of music known as progressive metal, and thus into a plethora of cool bands like Blind Guardian, Ayreon, etc... Talk about what got you into DT or what DT got you into, what other stuff you dig and the like.

I'm into a wide variety of music, and though Dream Theater is the reigning best band for me, there are many other close seconds. wink

Yeah I'm probably speaking for a lot of people, when I say that Dream Theater also got me into Symphony X. And I'm sure it also works the other way, those who get into Symphony X will go for Dream Theater after as well.
Im still ready for other bands and stuff to come along, and I have gotten plenty of recommendations. 3nodding biggrin

Spock's Beard and Angra! Spock's Beard is just too neat to handle and Angra... Well it's just power metal with a little progish touch I guess. Really nice band that one indeed 3nodding

And ofcourse one other that I HAVE to mention is Manitou! 3nodding Our band's drummer's uncle plays in it, and I think that it sounds a little progish too.

Ayreon, Sym X, Pain of Salvation, Porcupine Tree, Blind Guardian, Fates Warning, Devin Townsend (though he's a little more m/), Strapping Young Lad (Townsend being the lead singer), Nightwish (again, more metal than proggy), Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Opeth, King Crimson, Kings X, Dave Matthews has some prog in their songs, Sting too, Frank Zappa is nuts...

Tons of others that I don't know about.

As mentioned before, Dream Theater introduced me to Symphony X. By far the next best band out there before Dream Theater, IMO. Soon after that I was introduced further into the world of prog/metal. Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Grave Diggers, Helloween, Ra, Running Wild, Angra, Sonata Arctica, Cradle of Filth, etc. The last 6 years has been great and exciting.

Props to whoever mentioned Angra, Porcupine Tree and Blind Guardian! I've not heard nearly as much Spock's Beard as I'd like to - just the one song, "At The End Of The Day." That was pretty much an eargasm in its purest form.

Even though it's simple, I enjoy 4th of July from Spock's Beard. :3

Symphony X. I like them better than DT, to tell the truth.

Some other bands...Spock's Beard, Transatlantic (Portnoy drums for them!), Opeth (although they growl sometimes; it's a shame, their vocalist has a great voice), and if you're into DT you definitely gotta check out An Evening With John Petrucci and Jordan Ruddess.

Also, Stratovarius is a little over mediocre; and check out the guitar gods Yngwie Malmsteen/Jason Becker/Steve Vai/Joe Satriani if you haven't.

This is probably pretty sad, but my sister and I used to love that show Dragon Ball Z. Some of Dream Theater's songs were featured on one of the video extra things, The History of Trunks or whatever. She started listening to Dream Theater after that, (grew out of DBZ though needless to say) then I started listening to it and etcetera. Though she's a much bigger fan than I, I'm pretty fond of them now.

DT didn't really get me in to many other bands as I'd already been introduced to quite a few before I started really listening to them, but I did gain a larger appreciation for Prog metal through their music. A few other progressive bands I listen to are Evergrey, Pagan's Mind, Pain Of Salvation, Porcupine Tree, Shadow Gallery, Symphony X, Queensryche and Spiral Architect.

Someone mentioned Blind Guardian. I don't know where or what they said or if they even called them progressive or if it was even on this board because I've had this window up for a while, but, though I love BG, I think they're more thrashy-power metal rather than progressive. Just saying for future reference. o:

It was more a person than a band that got me into Dream Theater. We were just discussing some of our favorite older metal bands, and he sent me a couple songs and recommended more.

Quite honestly I'm more of a rock/punk (not the new crap) type. I like bands such as The Offspring, Bad Religion, Gob, and some others like them. Of course I like metal also, favorites being DT, Judas Priest, and Metallica (pre Black Album). I don't know if anyone would be interested, but I recommend listening to Apocalyptica. It's a group of cellos that cover metal songs and they are really great.

I might've called BG prog, but I don't really pay attention to genre labels. There are too many of them, and they just confuse me. domokun

Yeah, I heard DT on History of Trunks as well, back when I was into DBZ. xd I didn't think much of them then, but I was still young...

Hm... I guess what got me supremely into Prog as a whole was Rush. They are, undoubtedly, masters of the genre. After them came Kamelot, who REALLY flaired me back into the Prog/Power world. It was after Kamelot that I discovered Dream Theater. Once I got their album Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence I was instantly hooked. After DT, however, came Blind Guardian, Symphony X, Stratovarius, Secret Sphere, Thunderstone, Hammerfall, Warcry, Manowar, Shadow Gallery, Iced Earth, Nightwish, Demons and Wizards, Rhapsody (Luca Turilli is another guitar god), Sonata Arctica, and Winter Reign. Winter Reign, for those of you who haven't heard of them, are a Prog Metal group from California. They're pretty good, actually. I'd have to say reminiscent of DT... only more keyboard oriented. Honorable mentions from the classic era, too, are Europe, Iron Maiden, Foreigner, Suicidal Tendencies, and Judas Priest.

I'd say the thing that got me into DT was the fact that my parents played it all the time when I was little. sweatdrop
Concerning genres, I'll listen to anything except country, rap, screamo, or reggae. I like progressive rock, of course, and industrial, alternative, indie, pop, techno, emo, electronic, hip-hop, classical, metal, punk, j-rock, jazz, disco, folk, goth, hardcore, post-punk, nu-metal, oldies, and ska. That's about it. ^^
