(yeah I posted a thread...) Anyways I'm doing a paper for one of my DIG classes, about the newbie cycle, economy and perceived moral code of online communities. My two focus points are pet based sites and avatar based sites. I'm doing this through the guild simply cause I don't want asinine results; looking for serious responses. To maintain integrity of the willing participants please pm me the responses. Unless you don't give a flying crap you may post here. Do tell me if you don't care if I use your user name in the presentation. this is the part where one most likely thinks "whats in it for me?" What drew you to Gaia online, and why do you keep playing?
My best friend was using it, so I decided I wanted to use it, too. I got hooked and now I play because I like the friends I've made on here and I like the avatars.
What was your first item one gaia? (some of us can't remember this just estimate):
Can't remember... the one I remember really being happy over was the headband. I know it was one of my firsts. xD
What is your most cherished item(s) on Gaia and why?
Hmm... not sure, really. I love just about all of my items, but I love my headband, horns, and pengus. The headband because it was my first collectable and the horns and pengus because my best friend gave them to me.
In the beginning of your gaian "career" how was gold obtained, is it different from now?
It was attained just by posting. Now, it's only slightly different. I still get a fair amount of gold from posting, but I also sell avi art.
Do you feel strongly about TOS infringement?
Depends on the infringement, really.
Do you hang out with gaian's with similar wealth, morals, and views?
No, not really. I have a wide variety of friends.
Your views on CASH, good or bad:
Bad. Those who aren't able to buy with cash for whatever reason have to resort to the market place. Those who buy things for cash and resell usually resell at ridiculous prices.

What drew you to Gaia online, and why do you keep playing?
I actually discovered the site around the time it was created. I stumbled onto the test page with the flying rock (It was a browser test for rare events) and I clicked on the rock and it brought me to the GoGaia homepage. At the time I didn't have my own computer and was using someone else's, I also wasn't as computer savvy as I am now and thought it was something you had to pay to play. I later rediscovered Gaia from someone on the AdultSwim boards (before they went to crap) and joined Gaia the next day. I like the site a lot. I find it aesthetically pleasing (sometimes I forget what I'm doing and start staring at the screen O.o) and the fact that it was created by people my own age with similar interests is a plus. I continue to support them because I think it is good to help someone accomplish their dreams if you can. It is hard to create something from nothing and turn it into a business. I firmly believe that they do put in their best efforts into what they are doing here. 3nodding

I think it was Elegant Blue Dress.
What is your most cherished item(s) on Gaia and why?
My Kiki. It was already climbing in price in the marketplace and I joined a few months after it was released. It was the only thing on the site at the time that I had really wanted. Even more then the angelic pendant. I sold some sealed letters and also worked to earn most of my gold for it. It was my first official quest.

Then: Posting and polls. Thats it.
Now: Mostly from selling old MCs and posting.

I agree with Hiei, it really depends on the infringement. *sits on fence*

Yes and no. The main forums unfortunately are full of immature brats. I like most of the people I associate with in the guilds. I prefer to post in the guilds rather then the site forums.

It doesn't bother me as long as I can afford it. I have been donating around $15 to Gaia every month since I joined anyway. Now that they have been opening the MCs early I can decide if I really want the item or not and then spend the money in the Cash Shop instead. It supports Gaia so I don't mind the Cash Shop so much. I try to keep to limit of how much I'm willing to spend every month so I can still pay my bills. I don't go out hardly ever and the money comes out of my monthly entertainment budget. Although with the price of gas and the economy going to hell-in-a-handbasket it hasn't been easy to keep my entertainment budget from being put towards other more important things.
Extra/ and rant?
It really bothers me how people in the GCD complain about everything. Creating a site like this takes a lot of work. Sometimes it seems to me that those users are very ungrateful and it breaks my heart.
I'm also having issues with the whole dark-elf thing. I know there is such a thing as artistic license, but... Being a traditional D&D person it is difficult to watch the distortion of the original character concept. I think it would have been better and would have made more sense if they had called the elves in the comic Grey Elves instead of dark elves. Dark elves are associated with Drow. Drow are primarily portrayed as evil sadists. Grey Elves are on the decline and not much is known about them except that they are noble, reclusive, and interested in acquiring and keeping of knowledge. That alone would leave the door wide open for them to create their own world around this type of character concept.
I could so very much help them out with the storylines. 3nodding ninja

I used to be on GameFAQs. A friend of mine invited me to another message board he made up and it turned out great. At some point I stumbled upon Gaia, but didn't care for how it looked and couldn't be bothered signing up. Eventually, someone from the new message board I was on linked to Gaia again and it looked better...but I still didn't sign up. Eventually, the new board folded and GameFAQs was being run by Nazi mods. Gaia allowed cursing and seemed generally better, so I officially moved to Gaia.
What was your first item one gaia? (some of us can't remember this just estimate) Besides the peasant clothes I started out with, I think it was the hockey mask. I was a newb, afterall, and it looked cool at the time. redface
What is your most cherished item(s) on Gaia and why?
Uh...I don't know. If it counts as an item, maybe my zombie status. If only an item, then I really don't know. Probably something old and worth a lot...oh wait! I remember! My biggest quest and the one I started as soon as I got on the site - the Jack 2003 shirt. 3nodding heart

Not really. More like I go to boards/guilds with similar interests (living in Florida, being a zombie, watching pro wrestling, playing video games, etc.) I will also visit boards with more random people/views like CB and GD too.

Good for Gaia admins and people who like to pay for pixels, but horrible for Gaians who can't afford to pay with real monies.

Gaia's a nice site...but I can only imagine how much it must suck to newcomers who can't pay with real money and see people with tons of expensive stuff that they'll never be able to get.

What drew you to Gaia online, and why do you keep playing? I'm pretty sure that I had made a typo when I was typing in a web address and my computer inputted Gaia so I was like *shrug* I guess? and off I went!

One of my friends used to invite me and Kaz to some forums he was on. Usually I'd post once and forget about the place but when he told me to join Gaia and I saw that you got to make a little person and dress them up, it caught my interest. It was more than just posting something online, and it looked like it would be fun, so I actually came back every day since I joined to try to earn more stuff. XD
What was your first item one gaia? (some of us can't remember this just estimate)
It was that long sleeved shirt. White with blue sleeves. I can't remember what it was called, but it was one of the first things I bought on here because it was cheap. I still have it.
What is your most cherished item(s) on Gaia and why?
Probably my Kiki and Coco, and some other valuable stuff like winged anklets and panda and seal slippers.

By posting, and by voting in polls. It's not changed that much, I think I still get most of my gold by posting and browsing the site. But I don't vote in polls all that often since they changed how it gives you gold. I vote in polls when I see them, but I stopped bothering with poll guilds and things like that. Also daily chance and various games on the site give gold.
Do you feel strongly about TOS infringement?
Like a lot of people said, it depends on what someone does and how bad it is and stuff. Sometimes I think the mods on here ban people for some really petty reasons. But I can't stand things like hacking, scamming, or just generally harassing someone constantly.

I don't know, it depends. I'd say for the most part I hang out in guilds and in Kaz's thread. I mostly talk to people I know like you and my other friends who I've known for a while, and people who are from the guilds that I'm in... I don't post very often in the open forums anymore in random topics. I've really gotten away from that because I just don't like to be annoyed by some of the newer people who constantly beg and stuff like that. So I guess you could say, I do for the most part try to hang out with people of similar wealth. People who have been around for a while and aren't going to ask me for my items.
Your views on CASH, good or bad:
Good and bad. I didn't mind the idea at first. We've always had donation items and a few extra things couldn't hurt, and I know the site needs money to run. But I think it's gone overboard. Things are constantly being put in and taken out of the cash shop and it's done horrible things to the inflation. It's impossible to keep up anymore. It used to be that I could get all the donation items each month, either by donating or spending the gold. I can't do that anymore. I can't get all the donation items and all the cash shop items and everything that's just constantly coming out every week. It's too much, and it makes me not want to bother at all. I haven't donated to Gaia in quite a long time because of this. So, the cash shop has actually caused me to spend less money on Gaia than more.

The economy on Gaia is in the shitter. It really is. And I don't think the 2% thing in the marketplace has helped at all. It's possible it has but if it has, it was very little. I think it probably causes people to raise their prices to try to make up for the loss, if anything. I think all the cash shop items flooding the marketplace are also contributing to making things worse and worse. Even the cheaper items are ridiculously high simply because not everyone can afford to pay real money for them, and people place a huge value on real money as opposed to gold.

Economy of Gaia has gone down the crapper, I miss the days where a donation item could be obtained with only like 5-8k nowadays its about 25k on release month, then eventually if it grows tiresome it goes down to about 12k. Made me kinda give less of an importance on item hunting rolleyes
extra: To be honest its just my good friends that keep me on here if it wasnt for the good people I've met in guilds (and some in threads from back in the day) I would have left years ago xd
