Although I wouldn't consider Tom Waits to be a steampunk (or in any musical genre for that matter) he's certainly got a lot of the steampunk elements. He's no stranger to the calliope, the waterphone, or even just smacking around a tool box with a 2X4. If anything I would say the guy deserves an honorary steampunk title.

Here's some of his music.

God's Away On Business
Goin Out West
Cemetery Polka (not the actual music video)
Tom Waits in Mystery Men (I know it has very little to do with steampunk but it made me giggle)

If anyone was close to hitting the idea of a steampunk musical genre I think Tom Waits would be the closest thing to the real deal. Especially Blood Money and Alice. (More so for their experimental qualities)

Tom Waits is such an interesting musician, I first listened to him a couple of years ago and my mum popped up behind me and said she use to listen to him when she was about my age.
He's been around for a long time. I don't know if he falls into the Steampunk music genre but he has this industrial noise that no one else has.

I love his songs, Little drop of poison and Hoist that rag.

And that little mystery men video made me giggle too.

i am a huge tom waits fan ive been into him for about five years.
so far i own.

nighthawks at the diner
heart attack and vine
swordfish trombones
raindogs
bone machine
mule variations
blood money
alice
real gone

i missed out going to see him live in dublin which i am still really annoyed about.
i do think he falls under the steampunk classification in some ways, but he is more late 1900's through 20's-50's.
the thing with Tom is that you can listen to one album then switch to another and its like listening to a whole different band.
i personally think Alice is one of the most evil collections of music i have ever heard (and this is something seeing as i am into black metal).
he himself has said he has two types of songs "grim reapers and grand weepers"
and of course Dr Steel lists Tom Waits as one of his main influences so its all good really.

I thought that Blood Money was his most evil one. Although I do like Alice as well. In fact I would say Alice had some pretty upbeat parts. Like the song Table Top Joe. The music is so eclectic that it's not worth trying to pidgeonhole him into one category. Although the image he presents currently, and a lot of the instruments he's used are definitely more steampunk than a lot of bands that would consider themselves in the genre. You don't see people playing with a calliope, or in my opinion the most steampunk instrument of all the stroh violin.

I got to know Tom Waits because years and years ago a classmate preformed Ice cream man. I went looking for it in the local music store and was sold. Alice is heaven, in a dark, evil scary way

Tom Waits is great! I didn't like him too much at first because of his voice, but then after a few listens, I got over it. His voice makes him unique, among various other things smile
He's a good man, he is...

He makes for a great broken hearted night in...Even if you're not really broken hearted. >_< I love his smoky voice.
