Let's start this off with a picture, shall we?

I recently had that little friend(I named him Frank) removed from my right breast. It's a benign tumor or known as a Fibroadenoma. Now what does this have to do with body mods?

When I was considering the surgery to get it removed, I spoke with the surgeon at a consultation. During said consultation, I brought up my piercings. I told her that it would be a weighing factor in getting it removed(it wasn't urgent) because if I had to take out all of my facial piercings for surgery, I'd have to get my dermal anchors cut out and I wanted to avoid that if possible. I told her I had surgery to remove my tonsils about a year back and they made me remove all of my body jewelry(or replace it with acrylic) due to "possibilities of getting shocked" because they were using electocautery in the procedure. I told her that it was a huge headache and resulted in me spending a lot of money on jewelry that I would never wear again.

She was really cool about it, surprisingly. We ended up doing the procedure under local anesthetic so that she could make her own rules about it and wouldn't have to succumb to the rules of the hospital and/or anesthesiologist. She also prescribed me lots of Valium to take before-hand because of how scared I am of needles(yeah yeah ha ha). She didn't even make me remove the barbell in my n****e on that side. She just worked around it and covered it up during the procedure.

Needless to say, I was extremely grateful for how well she worked with me with this. I notice that a lot of doctors see piercings and a) blame every illness you have on them or b) want them outoutout before they touch you. She went above and beyond and it made me very happy to have her work on me.

My question to you all is:

What are your experiences with doctors/hospitals and your jewelry? Good? Bad?

I kept my lip ring retainers in with tape over them when I had my tonsils taken out. =3 My triangle wasn't a problem though.

I live in the middle of nowhere, and my doctor is very old fashioned, and tries to blame any ailment I have on my piercings. ANY problem I have is somehow related to piercings. Anyway, apparently he's died. And they haven't replaced him yet. I haven't had to go for a while anyway. But the only other doctor is like Hitler. She scares the crap out of me..

I went for a MRI, and was allowed to keep them in as long as they were titanium. I took them out though, just in case. And I've had a few operations, and was allowed to keep all of them in apart from oral ones. But I spose that is understandable, with mouth tubes and whatsit. They were only half an hour anyway.

Hospital seems fine for the most case. Just all the local backwards GPs I struggle with.

Since I don't have a whole lot of mods yet (1 tattoo, 4 in each ear, one 12g another 14g and the others standard, and my naval) I haven't encountered any problems with the doctors yet, but I'm sure I will as I expand.

I was in the hospital last year for about 5 days total with strep-pneumonia, and I was never told a thing, not through x-rays, or exams. I suppose they just weren't enough to interfere.

D: sorry! haha

Oh and turns out it wasn't a fibroadenoma. It was a benign tumor called a Phyllodes Tumor. Hrm. Could have kept increasing in size until they would have had to lop my whole boob off o_o Glad I didn't listen to them when they said it was no big deal.

Well first off you seem ok so yay for that!

My dentist was a d**k about my tongue bar back when I was stretching it, even though it never hit my teeth and was properly placed and sized.

I remember when I got my appendix out it was kinda rushed so they didn't tell me any thing. On the opperating table as they were putting me out I was talking to one of the nurses about my piercings and mohawk before I fell asleep.

Wow! I am glad you found it! If you don't mind my asking... how did you? I am always so sacred I would never catch something like this in time. sweatdrop

Well, it was pretty sizable, so it was very obvious. Haha. My boyfriend was actually the one to initially catch it and was scared to tell me because he was afraid for me. I immediately burst into tears but I'm glad it's all figured out now.

If you're ever worried, though, you can always go to the doctor and have them check for you to see if they think anything is out of the ordinary. 3nodding

I've recently been going for quite a lot of xrays for various things, and I explained to the radiologists that I can't remove my nose ring, and they were fine with it, though I still had to take out everything else. It's cute seeing a white L shape where my right nostril should be. :B

Didn't have to remove anything for my leg xrays. Pwnage.

I use to have a lot of sinus problems so I would get a lot of x-rays, lets just say it was very easy to tell its me on x-rays.

Aside from seeing my gynecologist every year {and she never said anything about my piercings or about my n****e piercings when I had them}, I've only had one other experience with a doctor and body piercings that would have been affected by a procedure.
It was a few years ago when I developed a very high temperature from a fever. I ended up having a dangerously high fever at 106.7 degrees F.
My right breast had swollen slightly due to what was later discovered to be Mastitis, which is a skin infection, most common in pregnant or nursing women. Well, I wasn't pregnant or nursing - I don't even have kids, period. I think what happened is my boyfriend was just a little too rough with my n****e piercings one day, and one of them ended up tearing some tissue behind my n****e, and badda bing badda boom~

Anyway, long story short, I needed to get a chest x-ray, and the doctor requested I remove my n****e jewelry {I already removed the one from my right breast because of the swelling}. He was really nice about it left the room while I did it and told me that if I wanted to put it back in afterward, he'd leave again so I could. Ha. I left them out while I was sick and in the hospital, and ended up forgetting to put them back in. Needless to say, they were only 6 months old, and they closed up. =/

I had to have emergency surgery on my ankle last night, and I was so relieved that we were able to work out keeping my more difficult piercings in. The only one that they were really worried about was my vertical labret, because I was going under general anesthesia, and they didn't want me to accidentally aspirate one of the balls. I would have taken it out if I absolutely had to, but once they figured out that they would have to take it out using pliers, they felt okay leaving it in. Fortunately it all worked out okay!
