I've done some research myself, and it looks like Boss' ML-2 Metal Core distortion pedal is as hardcore and heavy as it gets. It's got a price tag of $100, and I'd love to get it.

I bought a Guv'Nor 2 pedal marshall pedal for 30 bucks (big as sale, usually goes for like 120 or so), and i ******** love it. I was about to buy the DS-1 boss pedal, but after trying it it felt like plastic, and that it was fake. The GV2 compliments your guitar's sound imo. I figured this out when after playing it with a Deltatone guitar into a Kustom Hv30, and then swtitching the guitar to an Ibanez. The distortion's quality went up with the guitar, and it went from an already amazing sounding distortion to an earth shattering one. I like playing with a classic rock or indy rock kinda tone, and it really does it well, and if i put the distortion with the crunch distortion on my amp it really gets going and sounds metal.
Just make sure you try before you buy. If it's your first pedal, i suggest investing in a cheap multi effects pedal to get a feel of your style. It will have a few different effects, but all of them will be subpar. It will however give you a good look at a lot of different effects and their uses, and cheaply give you a lot of options. I lucked out; my amp came with multi effects buit right in.

I use the NYC Big Muff reissue and a Boss DS-1 for my distortion, and I would say they are amazing pedals. I was recording the other day through a Marshall TSL and it sounded amazing. Big low end, with crisp highs. One thing I like to do it set up the DS-1 after the Big Muff. I set the DS-1 with a little bit of gain with high volume and use it at the same time as the Muff as a volume boost that adds a bit of its distortion character, and it gets a crisp sound, perfect for solos.

You should check out the mod for the DS-1 on monte allums' website. This mod makes the pedal kick 5 times more a** and it does so with clear and accurate intent. Rather than using leds' for distortion though I reccomend germanium Diodes smile http://monteallums.com/pedal_mods.html

The MA Tri-Gain Rectifier mod has two types of gain; one using some 1N4002 Rectifier diodes and the other using a pair of clear red LEDs (I prefer the Germanium diodes over LEDs but I'm already thinking of putting two GE's in series with an LED in parallel since i'm talking huge volume loss now). The third "Gain " Stage is actually diode-free; so it's acting as a boost. With the updated components, this is one sexy boost. Sorry, i don't mean to plug this stuff, i'm just really excited with how well it turned out. I'm going to change out the op amp soon, and that will be the final stage smile

I use a Digitech Death Metal Pedal. It got some major kick, can't really use it without a tube amp though (which sucks for me, the owner of a terrible MG100 Half Stack). But when you plug it into a tube amp it grinds faces off. So basically...
Pros: Badass distortion Mixer output Magnificent EQ Stompbox design Great warranty Works well with passive pickups (such as my Dimebuckers)
Cons: Distortion is sometimes overbearing A little fuzzy on solid state amps EQ is a little too touchy sometimes
