Have you ever noticed how the individual zones of Sonic 3&Knuckles would seem to have their own objectives attached to them, instead of just going from one level to the next in the style of the two previous games?
Heck, I'd say Sonic 3&Knuckles is more mission-based than Sonic Heroes, which even has mission text at the start of each stage.
It could go something like this:
Angel Island Zone Act 1: Chase the Emerald thief Act 2: Escape the jungle inferno
Hydrocity Zone Act 1&2: Find a way out of the sunken ruins
Marble Garden Zone Act 1: Navigate the ancient city Act 2: Stop Eggman from destroying the ruins
Carnival Night Zone Act 1: Find Eggman's secret factory Act 2: Track Knuckles in the amusement park
Ice Cap Zone Act 1&2: Traverse the icy mountains
Launch Base Zone Act 1: Get to the Death Egg Act 2: Stop the launching of the Death Egg
Mushroom Hill Zone Act 1: Chase Knuckles into the mushroom forest Act 2: Find what's causing the forest to rot
Flying Battery Zone Act 1&2: Destroy Eggman's airship
Sandopolis Zone Act 1: Find the Ancient Pyramid Act 2: Get through the haunted tomb
Lava Reef Zone Act 1&2: Find the crashed Death Egg Act 2+: Survive the volcanic eruption
Hidden Palace Zone Act 1: Defeat Knuckles
Sky Sanctuary Zone Act 1: Catch up to the Death Egg
Death Egg Zone Act 1: Destroy the generator Act 2: Find Eggman Act 2+: Free the Master Emerald
Doomsday Zone Act 1: Take back the Master Emerald
Disagrements? Suggestions? Posts?

I'm not sure I'd say that the game had a mission-based style, but it certainly seemed to be putting together more of a consistent narrative as far as I was concerned, rather than just have you playing through random landscapes.
The little animations at the end of each act showing how you wound up landing in the next one were just a very, very nice touch when compared to the previous titles.

Sort of. If you look at it that way, it does seem like it, but a linear game needs something like that. That's probably why STH3&K was one of the best evr STH Games.

It's a shame that Knuckles' story doesn't flow in the same way that Sonic & Tails' does. I find it a really awesome touch that they edited the backgrounds to emphasise that Knuckles game is after Sonic & Tails have left (ie. the island is flying again, check Angel Island's background with Knux for what I mean, also Launch Base and Lava Reef no longer have The Death Egg in them).
It seems the only story in Knuckles' mission is Metal Sonic at The Sky Sancturary. Even The Flying Battery returning makes little to no sense.

Akreid It actually fits in well biggrin It's a shame that the 3D titles don't seem to be able to convey the same idea of continuity, even though they supposedly have more empasis on plot and character.
