What makes Utopia truly desireable is that it does not exist... Wouldn't it be wonderful if the world were perfect?

Nightmare.

That single word keeps him awake at night- that single word wreaks havoc upon his life.

What is a nightmare? A dream, of course, but what causes the mind to weave such a horrendous tale in our sleep?

The small things, the ones we so often push to the back of our minds, dismissing them as unimportant- those are the things that creep up behind you. Certainly, you tell yourself, I won't be frightened by a monster- they don't exist. Indeed, the days in which drifting off to sleep before an examination of the underside of your bed was unthinkable are long gone. You don't fear that which does not exist, do you?

Of course you do. You simply ignore that fear, the fear of the unknown, the instinctual fear of the unexplainable. You ignore it, but it does not disappear. It lays dormant in the dark corners of the mind, festering, growing, slowing and silently becoming far more than an irrational anxiety, a silly fear of things that go bump in the night.

It becomes a nightmare.

You may not remember it the first time- often, dreams, and likewise nightmares, are forgotten once we wake- but sooner or later, that silly fear will become your reality... at least, until the morning. Whether it be a looming shadow, a creak in the night, or a make-believe monster, baring its pointed teeth as it grins like a Cheshire cat, it does not matter.

After all... the mind is quite irrational in the dead of night.

Perhaps the best example of this irrationability is demonstrated by one man in particular- They say that he is so terrified by his nightime horrors that he refuses to sleep. They say that he secludes himself, avoiding human contact. They say that his dreams are vivid and lifelike. That he can describe them in such great detail that the dreamworld comes to life in his voice.

They say many things about this man.

They don't know the half of it.

Who is this man, so tortured by his forgotten fears? What has happened to him, to make his nightmares so excrutiating? I can tell you nothing of his past, my friend, but allow me to introduce this man.

Meet Victor Elliott, and prepare to enter his chaotic reality.

I must caution you, however- be wary, little fly on the wall, and do not lower your guard for a moment. Once you entwine yourself in this web of lies, you will find it most difficult to escape...

...:3 This is only the introduction... More to come, as soon as I have less to do, and more time to do it.

Wow, I'm surprised no one else would review on this...

It's like a more suspenseful Lemony Snicket thing you have going on... More insightful, less drama inspiring...
I love it.

I didn't really see it as much of an introduction, but more of an inner monologue reflecting your own personal beliefs. I didn't get the impression I was reading something fictional. If this was your intention, you did it well.

How would you begin the second part of your story, though? Would you keep the second person POV or would you jump into 3rd Omniscient? I imagine the piece will focus primarily on nightmares, but how will you proceed with the rest of the work?

Being that this has not been updated in a while, I will be moving it to the Short Story forums until further notice.

I loved it! I would like to read more, maybe just because I love dark and twisted tales of life.
