Footsteps slow, Chikala walked from their cave and into the jungle around it. Vuvi had promised to watch the seven cubs and the family's newest addition, a young snake Jivu had found and named Mwandani. The young snake worried her a bit, but she was fairly certain that it was young and so close to Jivu that it would hurt any of the family. She hadn't had much time with her mate of late and that saddened her. Sure, she had seen him, but he was often lying down in the shade, or in the cave, often beset on by one or more of their children. That was different from before, when they could just be together. She loved her children, but there was just so many of them and at times she really felt like it was all on her. It wasn't, but that didn't mean she couldn't feel that way every once in a while. She stopped walking when she realized she had wandered a fair distance from the den and her family. She wasn't lost, she could never be lost in this area. With a soft sigh, she flopped down in the shade of one of the many trees, teetering on the verge of a nice good cry.

Jeraha had awkwardly been trying to hide the burns on his back legs and tail, even going so far as to keep mud over the injuries to conceal them from view. Anything to keep Chikala from worrying. She had enough on her plate and he didn’t want to make things worse with his disgraceful burns. But he soon found that trying to hide them really wasn’t going to work out. If he was going to help with his children he needed to, well, get up and help. Not that he really felt he needed to help. Most families the male left the female to raise the young. He was supposed to do the hunting, which he did without complaint. Still, he wanted to help. Most families didn’t have seven cubs to look after. Plus, he didn’t want to be like his father at all.
His father had never been around.
When Chikala had left, Jeraha was soon to follow. He wanted to make sure she was doing alright. And, reluctantly, confess the injuries that sat on his back legs and tail that had made him even grumpier than usual as of late. “Chikala?” he asked, “I.. kind of have something to tell you.” He was a large lion unafraid of killing others. Why was he so frightened of his mate?

Chikala looked up and her face softened considerably in a smile reserved her her mate alone. She carefully stood and walked to him so that she could rub her head beneath his chin. She sat then, looked up at him, and tilted her head a bit. "Something to tell me? What?" she asked softly, blinking. What could he have to tell her? He looked guilty about something, but she wasn't sure what it was. She didn't think he did anything horrible lately. In fact, now that she really thought about it, he was being a lot of help. She couldn't imagine how parents managed without the help of their mate.

Jeraha let her rub against his fur, smiling fondly. She was the only one he ever let get that close to him without him tensing. Even his children romping around over and around him sometimes made him uncomfortable. He didn’t like letting too many animals see his softer side. It would be some time before his children really gained the love a couple of them desperately wanted to get out of him.
Things were different, of course, for Chikala. She was always welcome to see his softer side. In fact, he preferred her seeing that rather than the bully side everyone else saw.
“Well… A little while ago I met a leopard. He was a real a** and I didn’t care much for him. Anyway, he and I were about ready to rip each other apart when a brush fire started up around us. It spread quickly and we were soon trapped. We had to leap some flames and, well, I got my back legs burned. I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want to give you something else to worry about… but… now I feel like I’ve not been helping you enough… and I wanted you to know why.” He felt like a child confessing a bad deed. The guilt was horrible! She held some amazing kind of power over him.

Chikala listened patiently as he told his story, her eyes growing wider as he went on. When he told her about his legs, her face softened and her gaze dropped to them. Her poor love! He should have just told her in the beginning so that he didn't have to suffer alone! "Oh, Jeraha. Why didn't you just tell me to begin with? I could have helped you," she said softly and rubbed against him again. "I almost thought... Well, you were avoiding me, but I thought it might have been... I donno, for a different reason than that... like you didn't want to be around me because of something I did. Silly me, huh?" she asked, ending in a small laugh.

“I don’t know,” he grunted, feeling like a complete idiot. It had been such a good plan before. Not telling her about the injuries so they would heal up and she wouldn’t have anything else to worry about. She would never know and they would be fine. Now it suddenly felt like he had been a complete moron for thinking it would work so easily. What if the wounds had gotten infected or she had discovered them on her own? Then he would have been in trouble or she would have had even MORE to worry about than just the injuries themselves.
Dolt.
He smiled at her, purring softly for a moment. “That is silly,” he offered flatly, “of course I want you around. I’m addicted to you now- I can’t survive without seeing you at least once a day, and even that’s not really enough. I’m sorry I made you feel that way. I guess I’m not really used to sharing my injuries with others.” He smiled at her faintly, trying to be the cool lion while he spoke when really all he wanted to do was tackle her and nuzzle the crap out of her.

The fur on Chikala's cheeks darkened in a blush as he explained his addiction, smiling all the while. "What a silly pair we make, huh?" she asked and gave him another nuzzle before returning her attention to his legs. She brushed carefully at the mud that was caked there in chunks, clearing it to get a look at it. "I don't really know much about burns, to be honest, but it looks like it's getting better," the amateur healer sighed and stepped back towards her mate's face. He was so big and strong, she had to be silly if she thought asking him to not go off starting fights was a good thing. In truth, she didn't really mind so much. It kept him toned and that made it possible for him to protect her and the cubs. She just wished he wouldn't do it, simply because she hated the thought of him not being able to come back to her. "Jeraha, please don't not tell me things, okay? Especially when it has to do with you being injured in any way," she paused there to grin slowly, a bit of the cheek she had lost in the difficulties during and following the birth of their cubs returning in her eyes as she continued, "Besides, I happen to like tending to you. Especially when it's battle wounds you earned by kicking the a** of someone who deserved it."

Jeraha let her examine the healing burns, sure that fighting her on it would probably be counter-productive to what he was attempting to do in his spurt of honesty. She was his mate, after all, she deserved to be in the loop sometimes, if not all the time.
In time.
“Yeah?” he said, looking back at his feet to check in as well. Vuvi had said the same thing when she found out about his burns, though that had been an entirely different situation. Damn snake. How could something be so nosey when she didn’t even HAVE a nose?
“Hahah! Is that so?” Jeraha hummed, eyeing her thoughtfully, “well, this fight was less me kicking his a** and more making sure he didn’t get burned to a crisp in the fire. Something else I can thank you for- you’ve made me worry about others! If I had been as I was before meeting you I probably just would have left the little pest there to be devoured by flames.” He used his shoulder to nudge her, attempting to knock her over and pin her to the ground. Smiling, he looked down at her, being gentle though he clearly had the strength to do just about whatever he wanted.
“If you want me to tell you everything,” he said coyly, “you’re going to have to earn it in some way. I won’t let just anyone harbor my secrets, you know? Come on then. If you can pin me, then we’ll have something to talk about!”

"Well, I'm glad some of my good nature rubbed of-" Chikala gasped when he nudged her over and pounced her, pinning her with her back to the ground. She pouted up at him as she pawed at his chin, her eyes crossing a bit as she attempted to glare up at him from her awkward position. "Jeraha, you know you're bigger and stronger than I am!" she growled up at him, deciding that the only way to pin him as he wished would be to use a different set of tactics than brute strength. She wasn't weak by any means, but he was so much bigger than her!
Her mind working like mad as she thought of ways to move him without having to rely on her strength. Her tail curled up and around his as she lightly pressed her front paws against his chest, wiggling them slowly a bit before reaching up and giving him a lick on his cheek. She had another idea, but she didn't want to hurt him, and she had a good idea it would, even if only a little. "Please? I share with you." Her voice was soft and sweet.

Jeraha had been feeling pretty damn confident standing there over her. Of course he wasn’t holding her down to cause her harm, and he would eventually let her pin him if she didn’t find a way to do it herself, but he was still enjoying himself as he held her against the dirt. Made him feel pretty masculine. Her wiggling was tickling his legs, though, making him smile more than he intended to. Still, he was in complete control of the situation.
Until he felt her tail wrap around his.
That. That just wasn’t fair.
“Ah!” he grunted, closing one eye as he looked down at her, “I see what you’re trying to do! You want to use your girly influence to try and win me over- but you know I’m a jerk. That won’t work on me!”

Chikala smiled softly, lovingly up at him. In truth, she was perfectly content where she was, and had it not been her mate's trust riding on her being able to get free and pin him in return, she'd be happy to stay right there. "But you're not a jerk with me... Riiiiiight?" she pointed out, leaning up and nuzzling him a bit more as the toes of one paw wiggled in his mane. She really did love him and it kind of hurt her that he would keep things from her, but at this moment, she was certain he was only teasing her. At least, she only hoped he was just teasing her...
"And I love you, Jeraha..." she added, before her eyes narrowed a bit and she pulled sharply on his mane with the paw she had been twirling in it, tugging it to one side. "But, I swear, if you don't start letting me in on things, you'll be sleeping outside until I change my stubborn mind," she finished, her tone a bit forceful, but not angry and there was a smile still on her face. Even she had her fierce moments, when she wanted to.

“I would never be a jerk with you!” Jeraha assured her with a somewhat dishonest smile, “anyway, I know you’d never let me be a jerk to you!” He could feel her playing with his mane. Making him want to purr. If he was a less manly lion, he might have done it.
She tugged his fur, making him lose his balance and topple over to the side. Or, maybe he had allowed himself to fall over. It was pretty unclear. Either way, he was lying beside her in a heartbeat, moving onto his back with his paws in the air as though he were relaxing there. The threat he knew to be one more of concern than rage. Anyone would have been a little miffed with him at that point, so he hadn’t been surprised to see it in her.
Truth be told, he was glad she was a little upset with him. In its own way, it proved to him that she loved him still. Enough to worry about him. “I love you too,” he told her, his tone more sincere than before, “and I was only hiding it because I didn’t want you to worry. Anyway, you appear to have won our bet. It seems I’m no longer capable of lying to you even if I ever wanted to.”

Chikala... honestly didn't think that would work. But she wasn't the type to let good opportunities slide.
She jumped up and carefully laid herself on top of him, avoiding putting pressure on his legs at all. She kept her head raised so that she could look down at him, smiling in her sweet way. "I love you too. And I'll always worry about you, and our babies, too. I think less so if you tell me about things like that rather than wondering why you're avoiding me," she replied, leaning down to give his cheek a small lick. Their cubs were growing so fast and she worried that they would be grown up all too soon and leave them.
She set her head down on her paws, which were resting on Jeraha's chest and watched him through slightly narrowed eyes. "So, is there anything else you've been keeping from me that you'd like to share? Any other recent exploits I should know about?" she asked mildly, moving her paws a bit so that she could nuzzle his chest.

Jereha looked thoughtful for a moment, considering the question. WAS there anything else he needed to tell her about? The fire and the annoying ant of a leopard had kind of been the bulk of it. Now that he had shared that with her, he wasn’t sure any of the other things he had done were really that important. But, hell, she wanted in on his life, so maybe it was just enough to chatter about the small things.
“Some stupid purple lion tried to pick a fight with me a little while back,” he informed the lady, “I promptly shut him up with a few attacks and my completely charming personality, though. Nothing really happened.”
Getting into fights was second nature to the animal.
“What about you?” he asked, doing his best to look at her, “you haven’t been keeping any secrets from me, have you?” She had spent most of the time with the kids. If she did have secrets, he would be completely surprised. It made him feel guilty- knowing she didn’t even have the time to do things behind his back.
“Should we ever have another litter,” he muttered with no intention of sticking to the topic they had been discussing before, “I’ll be more attentive a father. I’ll let you wander off and get into all the fights you want, okay?”

Chikala smiled as he told her about the lion. She didn't so much like him getting into fights because she didn't like the thought of him getting hurt, but honestly it was really attractive knowing that her mate was that strong. Being so small made her want to depend on him for protection and it was really a romantic feeling.
"Not really. Not secret actions, anyways. Perhaps secret thoughts. Thinking about things I'm not yet sure I should share, simply because they seem... I donno." She didn't know how to explain. There was this subconscious fear that she might drive him away if she voiced some of her ideas, especially about things that had made him uncomfortable in the past.
But then, they were sharing things now, weren't they? He had opened up to her, it seemed only right that she do the same.
She nuzzled his chest again when he brought up "the next time", smiling in a part sweet, part mildly devious way. "I... wasn't sure if you would want another litter. I wasn't going to say anything, but the cubs are growing so fast, I worry they'll be grown and on their own before I have a chance to blink," she sighed and her gaze flicked up at him through her "mane". "I wouldn't mind having more cubs at that point."
