It's our job as dutiful followers of Meal, to brainwash everyone we meet to metal.

Kidding.

But, it doesn't hurt to let them try it for themselves, right? But there is a right and wrong way to do this.

Do you know someone who could be a follower? Need some advice and help on which bands are a good jumpng off point?

Discuss.

I have got my Blink 182-loving friend into Alestorm and Turisas. He even came to their concert with me ^^
I have also introduced my mate who is into mainstream/metalcore into some folk metal too. He particularly likes Nedgang by Finntroll 3nodding

It seems like Killswitch Engage is a band lots of people go through in the transition to metal. They get radio play and have a fair amount of popular appeal, but are a good step in the right direction when pulling somebody away from pop/rock. Shadows Fall, Mushroomhead, and Trivium (as much as they are hated in the "kvlt" metal world) are all good transition points too.

It's funny, but it seem most people I know who came over to metal all went through a lot of the bands that serious metalheads hate, but those first steps from pop to Korn have to be taken. Seems like most people take to it gradually, particularly in the area of vox.

I gave my friend Evanescence in hopes of getting her in that way. I was going to skip right to Lacuna Coil, but she wanted some Ev. She also enjoyed the Eluveitie song I played for her.

I had a classic rock friend. It was no difficult thing to get him into Metallica, and now I have him listening to Hallow's Eve and Forbidden. He's basically a full scale thrasher now. Most of my friends end of listening to Blind Guardian. They're a insanely accessible band and there's absolutely zero poser status involved. Helloween, Gamma Ray, etc. is a good transition. Power metal is soft, and because of DragonForce it is a great way to get some interest. From there of course, to get to heavier music is Iced Earth and CoB, in that order, and then you've pretty much got 'em.

i went straight from classic rock to slayer. then i widened my thrash horizons. then i widened my horizons into other areas of metal, with a few missteps (shitknot, SOAD). as for converting people, don't think i've done it...nor do i care to

I got one of my friends into gothic and symphonic metal by way of Apocalyptica. Within Temptation and Nightwish are hardlty kvlt, yes, but it's moving in the right direction.

The most accessible metal genres are gothic and thrash, I think.

I started on nu-metal. Bands like Papa Roach, Linkin Park, Slipknot, etc. Then mainstream stuff that is on music channels and now Folk metal, etc

*strokes chin* If we're going by pure popular appeal, no, they aren't. Metallica and Megadeth are extremely easy to get into, especially if you've been exposed to classic rock. Gothic is usually melodic and simple, traits that are good for mass appeal. Just look at the popularity of HIM (I know they're goth ROCk, but the difference between goth rock and metal is often very narrow).

But Iron Maiden and Dragonforce are nearly just as popular(maybe not so much Dragonforce because they are a new).

There is a huge difference between Goth Rock and Gothic Metal, and HIM are not Goth Rock. Goth Rock is stuff like: Sisters Of Mercy, Bauhaus, and Siouxsie and the Banshees. HIM are just a rock band who use a little bit of Goth Rock influences and a little bit of Metal.

I tend to think metalcore is the most accessible, but that's only if you already have a nu-metal/alternative audience.
