Here come the juicy bits

Given the stereotype of the Deep South as the Bible Belt, Rabbi Lynne Goldsmith's glowing, Chamber of Commerce-like endorsement of Dothan, Alabama, is not what you might expect to hear.

The city of 60,000 sits in the southeastern corner of Alabama, near the state's borders with Georgia and Florida.

The Jewish community in Dothan was never one that would wow anyone with its size. At its height, about 100 families worshipped at Temple Emanu-El. Today, temple membership is about half that number.

...

Blumberg put up $1 million to help relocate 20 young Jewish families to Dothan. The congregation took out ads in Jewish newspapers offering up to $50,000 per family.

Rob Goldsmith, the rabbi's husband, is director of the relocation project. He says the response has been beyond expectation.

"We've had 275,000 hits on our Web site, several hundred phone calls and e-mails. We've really gotten the attention," Rob Goldsmith said.

Interest in the program has come from as far away as China, Cuba, South America, Israel and all over Europe. The group's Web address is http://www.bfjcs.org/.

For a struggling Orthodox or Sephardi/Mizrachi Jewish community, I would strongly consider going. Unfortunately my particular Jewish needs wouldn't be met in Dothan, but it does indeed sound like a pleasant place to live. I wouldn't go there for the money, though it would help; but my family wouldn't qualify, as we have no children of our own.

It doesn't sound too bad, and if I was struggling more money I'd consider it, but mostly I'd pay attention to where I could get a job at.

Let me just say this, even though everyone already knows: It SUCKS to be a minority in the south. I'd love to help out if I had a family, but I'd assume there's less Jewish resources in the Redneck Riviera than there is here in WalMartsville.

Btw, Alabama is lame. I know from experience.
They beat my team last Saturday. sad

My dad was a athiest in the south...definately in the minority. I don't think people actually loved the fact that he didn't go to any place of worship at all. Then sometimes, I stayed home...well that is a different story. The point is, I know what you are talking about.

Honestly, I would move. I like the south, but I would perfer if it was in Georgia. It is too cold up north and it snows and there is ice and did I mention it is cold? (Don't see how you people are dealing with it). I adapted well to Florida.

Alabama is weird. I've only been there once, and that was just for a few days during the evacuation for hurricane Gustav. There was a Baptist Church on every corner of the small town were were stuck in. eek

I like living in the deeper south, in the (almost) underwater city of NOLA... It's not like I really qualify either...

I've never been to Alabama, but I have some relatives that live there. I've seen a few pictures, and it looks okay... I have no idea what the people there are like though, so I have no opinion (my relatives don't count, they're just plain weird anyways).

I prefer Israel above any other place in the world, even if I was promised 50,000$ to move elsewhere.

I cannot help but lol every time I see Alistar's signature.

H'anyway:
The South has a reputation for being racist, narrow-minded, almost entirely "born-again" and drunken. For these reasons, I would be put off moving there for $100,000. Perhaps that shul should just move north? However, it'll be full by now.

I do like their sultry accent and fine corn-alcohol mrgreen though.

Florida has, from personal experience, a lot of concrete and not a lot of soul.

As the resident drunkard, I will say that most moonshine that is produced comes from the Appalachians, and since the home made stills are full of used car parts and heating oil tanks, the solder joints are going to be lead core, which means... the booze is full of lead.

I recommend just buying White Lightning that's been taxed, it's safer.

PS: Irish White Lightning AKA Potcheen, is awful... don't bother picking up any. But I do recommend the following products...

The left jar looks like one you'd pee in if you were cut short somewhere.

Isn't it funny how every thread here ends up on either food or drink?
