So, as most of you probably know, I live in Missouri. While some areas aren't bad, other areas have almost no Jews in them. Today, I was really excited to find that another kid in one of my classes was Jewish, as we were talking to the teacher about getting make-up work for the upcoming holidays.

This other kid decided to interject for no apparent reason on how Hitler could have done a lot worse to the Jews and there's really no reason to expect special treatment. As you can probably imagine, I was pretty ticked off and, while I really wanted to kick him in the head or groin, gave him my best death glare, simply saying "Stop talking now" and doing so a few more times until he shut up.

But, I don't think that was the best response to deal with this, so I was wondering if anybody else has suggestions on dealing with Anti-Semitic comments?

B"H
I know that it is very hard to deal with that in school. And certantly if you are in high school I can imagin it is probably much worse however I do not attend..or much rather will not. But the most I can give is ignore it. Or better yet take it to the teacher. Did you not say it happend while you were talking to the teacher, did she not do anything? It probably is not much help and I am not sure if it will help even in high school asuming you are attending seeing as how I have not gone to school sens 4 grade. XD
Well best of luck to you and this unfortunant problem.

The times I've encountered things like that, it depended on whether it was a stranger or a classmate/coworker that I knew. On one occasion, I remember just laughing and saying, "So, if it happened to your family, you'd be fine with that?"

On another occasion, I smiled and said, "I'm asking ahead of time to be able to make up my work. I'm taking my holidays off, but I'm not demanding that you take my holidays off, or acknowledge them in any way. That would be special treatment. By contrast, the entire school is forced to shut down for Christmas and Easter. Not only schools, but all government offices. The Christian holidays are considered national holidays, despite the Constitutional injunction against governmental support of a national religion. Now. My taking this time off doesn't infringe in the least on any of your rights. Not allowing me to do it would infringe greatly on mine. Now I'm through teaching the pig to sing -- it's wasting my time, and I can see that it's also annoying the pig, so why don't you focus on your own schoolwork rather than worry about mine?"

THEN I ignored the person. And because this jerk was talking to me in front of my social studies teacher, I got extra credit for the polite smackdown.

Sounds good; thank you very much!

Though I'm still very frustrated that whoever is in charge of planning athletics in my area decided to make a cross country meet the day of Yom Kippour. Thanks...

Or I could just build a flame thrower from things commonly found in a hardware store.

what can I say, a sick mind is a terrible thing to waste.

My area is not anti-semitic, well, some stupid kids make some comments, then the rest of the class treats them like outcasts. No, the problem here is that people are anti-muslim. These kids really need to look into things before the proclaim it to be a violet religion. I'm getting tired of always having to defend a religion that is not my own in Philosophy class.

It seems I got a little off topic on my rant. Well, at least you would know I would do the same for you guys.

Basic prejudice is built on either fear, or ignorance. I live in a non-Jewish area. But you probably all know that by now sad
I've experienced most of it. I've never actually been hit for my faith, but the comments sting inside. And all of it was built on one of those two.

Examples of ignorance:
My brother, who is so not Jewish he's confused by the term Kosher, telling his mates that they should call em "Jew-boy" because he thought it'd be funny. My grandad put him straight.
A friend in school asking if Jews and Nazis were the same thing, and another asking if the Holocaust is celebrated in June or July... My Rastafarian friend put them straight.

Examples of fear:
I walk in to a party, crack a few jokes, have a laugh and a dnace, etc. A smaller guy, with blond hair and blue eyes, walks over and calls me a "Dirty Jew". The next day he has a black eye. I didn't raise a fist to him, I'd just gone home a short while later, feeling a little bemused and pitiful. But I do have a few friends, and it turned out they'd put him straight wink

So my advice to those suffering at the hands of the anti-semetics: Stay above them and have some very good pals you trust, to help you through the rough times, and to get you out of 'em. cool

If you retaliate, you're just as bad as them.

Bahatz: ....The ignorance in that "celebrating" comment almost boggles my mind. I hope that I would have your self control in a situation like that!

very good choices, but the answer is simple, knowlage is the rope to ignorance's neck. if you conquer the ignorance, aceptance is only an inch away.

And you certainly showed plenty of knowledge in that last post. Did anyone else find that slightly ironic?
