I tried breaking some century rebreakable boards the other day at a different sensai's dojo because we don't do board training at mine. He let me try it after I had done some makiwara training. He said I could break the yellow board. Then after that I broke the blue one in one strike to. He would not let me break the red board but I know I could of.
I've never seen anyone break these before so I have no idea how good that is. If you've done it before will you tell me. the one after red is black but I've seen black belts break 3 of them at once but that was with a kick. I'm only 140 pounds though so I could'nt put much force into one stike. I did the palm hand strike. I've only been in martial arts about 1 year and don't realy do any strength training.
What can the average person break?

Neph - They are plastic breaking boards. They come in two halves that slot together and will snap apart if you apply over a certain pressure. They are pretty good but will weaken with age, so if you've been using an old one then get a new one watch yourself! Lol Here's a link to a site that sells em, you can kind of make out what they are like in the picture: http://www.karatedepot.com/tr-bo-01.html
@Topic - I have broken two red boards with a reverse punch. I once saw someone in a competition break three red boards with a ridge hand strike... That being a stike using the side of the hand above the thumb, if you understand what I mean. Breaking em with kicks is easy, provided you have decent accuracy razz I personally have broken three reds multiple times with various different kicks. Never even seent he black boards

Are you good at it or a begginer or a sensai and what kind can the lower rank break?

When I used to do tkd, we used something completely different which I don't think came in dirivitives. Also, for black tips and black belts we used actual wood, so I have no experience with century boards.

Rebreakable is allot better than wood.! Breakable wood is just wasted on training. For demonstration there better but if you break hundreds in a year think of all the wood that was wasted and money.

Nah, we used rebreakable boards, but we used wood for when we needed to practice for our grading to get to black belt.
I only yesterday went back to taekwondo and I found that they do use the rebreakable boards like c_w_16 described, with the blue (easiest), red(medium), and black (hardest), except there was no yellow because it's just sissy plastic whee
For a beginner, I guess blue is average to break, when you get somewhere around 2 years red should be your level, although I do see some people manage to break red ones just after a year if they progress well.
I personally can break a black and red together with a side kick (well, thats the best I attempted, so I don't know if it is my max). I can break black ones with a knife hand chop (again, I didn't try anything higher, so I'm again unsure of my max), and the same story goes for elbow strikes where I didn't attempt higher than a black board.
c_w_16, I believe that you should be able to break a red one easily enough if you just focus on your attack well enough.

To answer this question, there weren't many 'bits' as they were usually just split directly in half. We only use the wooden boards for very special training.
