His royal blue eyes were the only thing about Hakan that gleamed. They shone still, sad, but clear. There was so much he had accomplished when he had been young, when he had been a cub. But since he had reached adulthood and had fell out of contact with the God Mrost, he felt...useless.

Hakan, one for family, found himself with little family around him. The pain of knowing that his mother's age was something he could not battle and fight away had driven him to finding something, a cure for age perhaps. Even still, his brother was off somewhere and he hadn't seen his dear sister for the longest time.

If he'd known they had both settled with families it probably would have broken his heart.

He was still a warrior, still gruff and rough around the edges. But his massive size and fierce aura tended to be the cause of his lonliness, not many rogues were strong enough to approach him. He'd met his old flame Mbaya and had seen what he had done to her in his youth, turned her mad with rage. He'd met the son he'd never once spoken to.

He'd lost Kizuka as a youth. He'd lost Mbaya. And then there was that other, that other swamp girl who he was falling for. But she was a pride cat and Hakan had always been the proud rogue. Besides, he was a murderer, a killer, a bringer of pain. He didn't have any right to be a part of that girl's innocent, precious life.

He'd ruined enough as it was.

And yet...

Life was becoming somewhat dull. There were no great wars, no legendary battles to take place in...and...and he felt useless.

He stood slowly, driven by his thirst alone, and shook clouds of dust from his fur. He was certainly a rogue in appearance, scruffy and more ungroomed than usual. There was that cold, wily look in his untrusting eyes and a power in him that shivered with authority. Slowly and with great effort, he turned towards the watering hole, glad that the sun was cooler now that it was dipping into night.

Life....was miserable.

Why was it that even well thought out plans didn't bare any fruit? Damn her brother to hell! He and his scrawny rat-like mate had somehow thwarted her in taking over the pride. Just the thought of it bristled the lioness to no end. If she could get revenge on her brother she'd gladly sink her teeth and claws into the male's hide and rip him to shreds.

Not wanting anything to do with the position she had been 'granted' in the traditionalist's pride Koka had made sure to leave the desert behind her and along with it her two daughters who had turned out to be completely useless. A growl formed in the lionesses throat at the thought of everything that went wrong during that battle. Now the lioness was forced into the life of a rogue again with nothing to take her anger and frustration out on.

With the sun starting to dip below the horizon Koka's dark fur helped the lioness blend into her surroundings a bit more. The darker the night became the more deadly the lioness became because who could see a shadow among shadows until it was too late? This thought caused a small, devilish grin to grace the lionesses maw. She'd soon sink her claws and teeth into some poor vegetation eater's hide and she'd take great delight in the pain she'd cause. For now though, a good drink was in order and the sight of a waterhole up ahead was much appreciated but it was the sight of a lion near the watering hold that made the lionesses violet eyes glint.

He lowered his head to drink and sucked in great mouthfuls of water, ridding himself of the itching dryness that had been tormenting him the last hour or so. The water was chill but stale and beneath its surface he thought he saw something stir. He breathed in and choked on water, snorting irritably to free his nostrils of its sting.

The water rippled as a frog came to surface and Hakan angrily swiped it with a paw, watching as it swam away in fright.

Setting his teeth he let a deep growl reverberate in his chest, the fierce sound warming him and angering him as he realised hat he'd been driven to. He was nothing. He had no purpose, no place in the world except to instill fear in scrawny little rogues who just weren't worth his time.

He drew in a clear breath of air and as he did he caught something fleeting on the wind. He turned his head and in the dimming light, spotted something approaching. He narrowed blue eyes and tried to make out what it was. Whatever it was it was as dark as the shadows around it, the perfect colour for sneaking up on someone.

Did it mean to sneak up on him?

Unsure whether it knew he had noticed it, he lowered his head and drank again, slower. He kept the movement in the corner of his eye, watching cautiously.
PostPosted: Tue Sep 23, 2008 7:31 am

She'd been spotted...

Watching as the lion slowly lowered his head to continue drinking Koka allowed her body to sink deeper into the grasses. She'd gladly play this little game with the lion. It would at least be useful to test her own reflexes. The last thing the lioness wanted was to become rusty.

By passing the water's edge, Koka purposefully took a roundabout route to the lion. Curious on how intelligent this grey male was she attempted to make it appear as if she had left, scared off by his larger size while in reality she had just rounded to the lions backside.

Claws digging into the dry ground, Koka lined herself up behind the male. Every muscle in her body twitched with anticipation. Part of her hoped that this lion could fight back while another part of her hoped she could tear him a part bit by bit without any resistence. Either or would please the lioness one way or the other.

Waiting, for what seemed like an eternity, Koka wondered if she had tricked the lion. Either way she couldn't suppress her mad desire to sink her claws into his flesh. Creeping as close as she dared at that point, Koka lined herself up with the lions flanks before thrusting herself from the grasses with claws and teeth bared ready for retaliation or the sweet sensation of ripping flesh.

A normal lion might have found this disconcerting, might have made a hasty retreat from the moving ghoul in the dark. But Hakan felt something different from fear. He felt excitement, he felt himself coming alive. All the lessons taught to him by Mrost and himself began to come into sharp focus and he shivered as the adrenaline started to warm him.

He paused in his drinking as the movement swayed outside of his vision and he tried to put himself in his stalker's paws. What would he have done if he were trying to stalk prey as big as he was?

Take it by surprise.

There wouldn't be any other way. A direct assault could mean terrible injuries and continuing on the same path when you knew you had been noticed was foolish. He was confident that if he found himself in a dual of sorts, that he would come through pretty much okay. However, if someone snuck up on him and got the first attack, pinned him or rolled him then he'd be in trouble. He was heavy, and the bigger you are the harder you fall. If he ended up on his back he'd not be able to find his paws quick enough.

And, considering his position at the water he thought that this 'ghost' would come at him from the back, trapping him between itself and the water. Yes. Perfect.

He smiled and white teeth glinted brilliantly.

This was a smart foe. Could it be he had finally met someone on equal terms with him? His heart beat harder and he remembered then why he had chosen this path. Battle was his one true love.

He kept his head low, spread his legs a little wider to strengthen his stance and dipped an ear back. But his attacked was faster than he had predicted and the second he moved his ear the creature was pouncing at him. He heard the movement and knew he would not have time to swing around to meet it mid-clash. He felt the impact against his hindquarters and the sting of claws on his flanks and with unleashed fury twisted his body, intending to use his jaws to tear the attacker from him.

Oh, how she enjoyed that feeling as the smell of blood tinted the air. Her claws dug as deep as they could into the lion's flank but Koka didn't allow herself to stay there and revel in the sensation. A retaliation was already headed in her direction and it was coming in the form of the lion's jaws.

Retracting her claws, Koka let go of the lion. Her smaller frame allowing her to dodge out of his way. Knowing a full head on attack would be pointless at this point Koka dissapeared into the grasses once again. She wasn't naive. She knew the male could easily over power her with his large and bulkier frame. It was times like this that the lionesses sharp mind was the most useful.

With her sides heaving with heavy breaths, the andrenaline just coursed through her veins. She waited in the drawing dark, the grasses licking at her body as she crouched low, her stomach grazing the ground. This is what the lioness needed; something to take out her frustration on.

She was fast.

The close proximity, no matter how brief, had revealed that his attacker was indeed female. He had seen a determined, sly glint in her eyes and a smooth, powerful jaw. He’d thought that maybe it was Mbaya, come to finish him off, but he knew her scent well and this one was not familiar.

She was a stranger, a hunter in the night with a pelt as dark as shadow.

Hakan, a murderer though he was, also had a noble heart. He wouldn’t have attacked a girl no matter how much she might have irritated him. But this was no simple lady. She had attacked him first and he was sure if he had been a lesser lion she would have attempted to make a kill. Maybe she still intended to.

He wouldn’t kill her, though. No. He didn’t want more blood on his paws. Besides, she could be a worthy adversary, a rival to keep him on his toes. Why waste such an opportunity?

He followed his swing round; despite the fact she evaded him, and let himself turn fully to face her. But already she was slipping into the shadows, the grass rustling and then going still; to be brushed by a gentle breeze that would mask her movements.

Clever girl.

He licked his maw and shook himself to rid his flanks of the pang her claws had left behind. Then he took a slow step forwards, lowering his head to scan the grass for any sign of those cunning eyes.

Don’t let your guard down. Cool your breathing. Listen. Listen. Listen.

He turned his ears slowly, catching the sounds of buzzing insects, rustling grass and the occasional hoot of a distant bird. But he knew she was there, waiting. This was what a lioness did best. She was the huntress and he the antelope. But he would not flee at the flash of claws and teeth. He would rise to meet them.

He smiled, growled and took another step closer, hoping to urge her out of her hiding place.

Koka smirked as she watched the lion face out, his back close to the water. At least this lion wasn't an idiot. He knew how to cover himself now that he knew he was under attack. The growl and step did nothing but amuse the shadowy female though. The last thing she intended was a head on attack. Instead she chose to move off to his left side. Moving slowly to make sure the grass rustled as little as possible and using the little breeze that was brought with the oncoming night to mask her movements.

She positioned herself mere yards from the lion, near the edge of the tall grasses and waited for several moments. She wanted to see if she could catch him off her guard but it appeared that the male was well trained in fighting techniques. Ah well, she'd still have fun with him, and she -had- drawn first blood.

Licking her maw, she gathered her legs under her. The white puff of her tail twitching in anticipation as her muscles prepared themselves. Another moment went by and with a twitch of her ear Koka lept from the brush. The full intention with this next attack was to see if this male could knock her from her goal, otherwise she'd send him tumbling with a strong hit from the side. If he was idiotic enough to allow that happen, Koka would be more than happy to end his life, for once he was down, he'd be easy prey for her.

As he took that second step the attacker leapt again.

But he was ready for it.

He hadn't quite predicted where it would come form, but he knew it wouldn't be straight on. As it was his prediction gave him just enough time to prepare himself and stop himself from getting the full brunt of an attack. He was beginning to learn that she was skilled and dangerous, sleek and dark as an assassin. He couldn't underestimate her, though deep down it was hard to think of this as anything but a game.

He turned to meet her attack with his shoulder, lowering his head in an attempt to get it beneath her pounce and knock her off balance. If it worked, fantastic! However, if she managed to gain herself in time he might lose an eye to her claws if he wasn't quick enough to leap away from any counter attack she might make.

Koka had been expecting a counter attack, but nothing like what she got. It turned out she had, somewhat, underestimated her opponent. The lion was smart enough not to use his claws but his brute strength and size but in a more...unconventional way. Instead of just tyring to pummel her to the ground, he had decided to use her strength of agility and speed against her and it had worked.
With no way to stop her attack, Koka was unable to change her direction of momentum, and the grey male was able to get under her, knocking her head over heels,

With the breath knocked out of her, Koka scrambled to her paws as quickly as she could, her sides heaving in an attempt to get air back into her lungs, but a grin of satisfication never left her maw. Finally, she had found someone that was going to keep her on her toes. That was what the lioness craved, what she needed!

Instead of darting back into the grasses, Koka decided to try another technique. Instead she stood where she had landed and her violet eyes never left the male as she stared him down, almost as if she tempted him to make the next move.

He couldn't help but feel the warmth of victory in his heart as he felt his attack hit home. A grin lit his eyes with a fiery hunger for a fight, not a fight as such, more a spar - a clash of two strong opponents; two gladiators craving something worth their time.

Maybe he'd found it in her.

He braced himself for the impact of another attack and was thus surprised when one did not come. He paused, lifted his head to look at her and peered into those violet eyes. Such odd eyes. Had he ever seen another with eyes like that before? But now was not the time to admire his opponent, that would come after the fight was decided and the victor emerged.

She was waiting him to make a move?

Well then, he wasn't one to keep a lady waiting, besides if she thought she could handle a full on attack from a warrior he wasn't going to deny her the opportunity to find out.

He was almost hoping she would find a way to halt his attack.

With a smirk he shifted the energy into his back legs and used them to propel him forwards. A snarl ripped free from his throat and this time it was him reaching for her. It wasn't a speed attack and if she had wanted to zip away than she could have. It was an attack of brute strength alone, the way a wave crashes against the cliff.

What would she do now?

The attack was powerful and it was certainly not something Koka wanted to be hit with. She could easily dart to the side and make a counter attack, but why take the easy way out? Why not trying somethin more interesting and -far- more dangerous. After all, one of the main rules of fighting is never let an opponent have easy access to your belly, but that was just what Koka was going to do. As the male rushed her Koka ran right at him, but just as they would have hit one another head on Koka lept upwards to soar up and over him. If this succeeded fully she'd manage to hit the male in the back of the head with her back paws, otherwise she'd just merely avoid the attack. There was also the possibility that she had not counted on the possibility that the male may be able to move fast enough to make a nasty attack to her underside.

Koka's risk was something that took Hakan by surprise.

One moment he was sure they were going to clash, sure that he would be able to claim this victory his and then demand answers of her. He did have quite a few questions to say the least. Like...why had she attacked him in the first place? Who was she? Where had she learned to fight? But he wouldn't be able to demand answers if he lost.

However this new strategy put hesitation into Hakan's stride and her risk proved worth it. He tried to duck out of the way of her hind paws and had no time to think of striking her underside. She clipped him and, fearful of having his back to a much faster opponent, spared no time in turning. He whirled as fast as his body would allow, set his back paws against the ground and leapt again. This time it was a blind leap, an attempt to match her speed by not dwindling on detail. If he caught her then so be it, if not he'd hopefully force her to take a step back.

The plan had worked, somewhat...She at least hadn't ended up with a serious injury and that was always a plus side to attempting a new strategy, even if it hadn't worked out as she originally intended.

Landing with as much grace as she could from such a large and poerful jump, Koka whirled on her paws in an attempt to make another attack upon the male's back but as it turned out they both had a similar idea. They do say great minds think a like...

With both of them pouncing at one another Koka could see the attacks turning out horrible for both of them. Instead she opted to roll her body in an attempt to avoid his attack.

Claws met her side just as she passed the male. She landed heavily on her back and rolled over twice before stopping. Her body wasn't quite as use to being beaten up as it had once was, and the lioness felt somewhat paralyzed for a moment.

Finally her muscles cooperated with her and she slowly clambored to her feet. A decent sized gash sported her ebony coat just below her blood red winged marking. Not daring to take her eyes off the male though, the lioness didn't turn once to see how bad of an injury it was.

She was fast. Too fast! He couldn't stop himself mid-leap, though he feared what such a direct strike might do to the both of them if it happened. And then in the slightest of moments she was rolling away from the attack, evading the possible encounter with the swiftness that he would take the time to marvel at later.

He watched her rolling away and felt a pang of guilt as she paused on the ground. Had he...--no, she was getting up. He felt the held breath rush from his lungs and turned to face her, not trusting that she wouldn't try anything further. He didn't think her injury was so bad that it'd put her off entirely, but in the light of the coming moon he could see the shine of blood on her pelt.

He was beginning to regret that blind attack now.

It was then, in the brief silence where no one dared move nor take their eyes form one another that he spoke.

"Well, I sure must have done something to piss you off, lady." He replied, sporting a slight grin to emphasize his slightly teasing tone. "Though what the hell it could have been, I have no idea."

Ah he speaks! About time. She had begun to wonder if she'd have to be the first to spark a conversation since it was apparent she wasn't going to be able to kill him...yet.

"Hardly." She smirked. "I've had a few things ticking me off and some pent up frustration to get rid of. You just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time." She allowed her stance to lighten up as she rose to her full height, which wasn't large at all. Koka had always been a smaller lioness but she made up for it in speed and agility.

"Turns out, I picked a target that actually knew how to fight back." Coming from Koka, that was quite the compliment.

"Well, glad to be of service." He replied with a mock bow of his head. This was turning out to be an interesting sort of day...or end to the day. Hm, maybe things would start to look up after all. If he had opponents like her out there then maybe his skills wouldn't go to waste. Maybe they could be put to better use.

He'd had enough of scaring and intimidating rogues. He wanted purpose. Maybe he had to look in others to find it.

He smirked at her compliment and relaxed his posture very slightly. Apparently it was time for talk and he had to admit he was thankful for a break. It was a little unnerving fighting someone so much faster than you!

"I'm Hakan'mawasii, most call me Hakan. Do you have a name, assassin?" He was curious about her now. She wasn't like Mbaya or Mahakali or any of the other fighting lionesses he had ever met. There was something...something about her that intrigued him. He wished the light were better so he could see her properly, maybe see if there was something about her he recognised.

"It's been a long time since I've felt a fight slipping out of my control."

Taking the initiative to bring their battle to an end, Koka allowed herself to sit down on the ground. That was when she looked to inspect the damage to her side was minor and would probably heal without leaving a scar. "I am known as Koka." She replied as she swung her head back to look at the male. His grey fur qas quite dark, and the mottled spots upon his back would certainly help disguise him in the dead of night, though her certainly wasn't a shadow like herself.

"Yes well, I do my best when it comes to my prey, though I must say your skills certainly surprised me. I was expecting a fight, but nothing like what you gave me." She flicked her tail before wrapping it around her paws. "If you were as fast as your were strong I'd have really been in trouble."

He sat too and felt the adrenaline leave him. Suddenly he felt...cold and he realised then that the night was closing fast upon them.

"If I said it's a pleasure to meet you, would you think me sarcastic?" He smiled. "I've needed a good fight for a long time. I must say I wasn't expecting a match to come of a female, but it's welcome none-the-less." He paused then added. "And it is a pleasure to meet you. I was beginning to think my life was going to end up a dull, never ending circle of wandering, eating and sleeping until I got old and died." He snorted softly at that.

Why did one have to get old and die?

He shook the thought away as quickly as it had come. "My size is both my advantage and disadvantage. When I was younger I feared the day I would become an adult and lose my agility. Now-a-days my size alone keeps any combatants away and there hasn't been word of war on the wind in a long time." He sighed, seemingly saddened at this.

PostPosted: Wed Sep 24, 2008 3:19 pm

War...ha! She had seen a war not long ago but nothing came to fruit from it.

"I wouldn't find it sarcastic, no." He replied with a small snippish sound to her voice. As much as she enjoyed the fight, Koka wasn't much for idle talk. She'd particpate, yes, but her temper seemed to flare the most when conversations took, what she believed, a boring turn.

"Life is far too boring, I will agree."

By now the sun had completely dissapeared over the horizon leaving a little splash of deep pinks and purples in the sky while stars began to litter the deep blue. "So why and from whom did you learn your skills? Surely you didn't learn them completely on your own?"

Maybe if Hakan had gotten wind of war in the Firekin lands he would have gone to aid them. He'd found out that he might have had relatives there when he'd gone on a mission for Mrost as a juvenile. He'd felt a little annoyed at first because he'd prided himself on being rogue.

But then Mrost had told him it could work to his advantage.

Sadly, the truth of the matter was that no firekin blood ran through his veins. His father had been a rogue and his mother a pridelander - and how he had hated pridelanders as a youth.

"No, I had a mentor." He replied, though he sounded saddened at the thought. He hadn't seen Mrost for so long that he was almost beginning to think the worst...that the God was dead or worse that he'd ceased to be useful to him. What then? Was his life forfeit if he no longer served any purpose? He could be the best warrior in the world and still not beat a god.

"He was fueled by war. No, he was War. He made me his High Priest but it has been long since I have seen him. I sold my soul to the devil as it were when I was a youth desperate for strength to protect what I could not protect." He fell silent, realising he'd said too much.

But she was strong too. Maybe she knew of Mrost.

"He was War?" Koka raised an eyebrow at that. "No one can claim themselves as War unless they were the God of such, and I highly doubt, you have ever met said God." She flicked her tail, now getting fairly annoyed with how the conversation was going. "Besides, even if you did meet the God of War I am not surprised that he would have left you alone, seeing as I've not heard from him since I was a mere cub!" She growled out the last end. God or not, Koka was -not- pleased with Mrost and his lack of appeasing the one damn thing she wanted out of life.

Darkness, at this point, had finally come and with it brought the moonless night scattered with stars. Creatures of the night were beginning to rouse and even some daring grass eaters began to forage in the cover of darkness. Unfortunately for one poor field mouse, Koka's paw was far from a rock. The creature dared scamper near the lioness which resulted in the critter being harshly destroyed with one swipe of her paw. A flash of white graced the lionesses maw as she snarled, baring her canines in the action as she took out her frustration on the poor mouse.

No longer able to stand it, Koka rose to her paws. "I don't know why I waste my time with idle talk." With that she turned to dissapear into the night.

He sat silent for a moment, his eyes lingering on her dark form in the darker night. Even in the poor light he could see the gleam of the whites of her eyes. So, she had heard of him. Been let down by him? He could not tell a lot of what had happened from her brief words. Even still, he could tell that it made her angry.

This was confirmed as she killed that unlucky mouse and he saw the flash of her fangs, bared in her irritation.

He opened his mouth to speak then, only to be cut off again by her declaration that she was wasting her time.

If Hakan had been smarter, maybe he would have let her go. Maybe he would have sat and watched her fade away into shadow. But she had intrigued him. He liked her fiery spirit, the skill of her claws. He’d enjoyed their fight and he didn’t want it to be their last. She’d awoken his own spirit again and he could feel it burning within him. The lonely, broken rogue was being pushed away and the true heart of Hakan’mawasii was shining through again.

He stood and moved after her.

“Wait.” He drew up alongside her. “I don’t know if I’m being a fool, since you tried to kill me just a few moments ago, but I’d like to go with you. For a while at least.” He couldn’t explain why. He just felt drawn to her. “Maybe we’ll have better luck finding a battle if we travel together.”

Stopping dead in her tracks with only the white tuft of her tail being the only really visible thing amongst the tall grasses, Koka growled. "You want to come along with me?" She whirled around upon Hakan, forcing herself into his personal space. "What makes you think I'd want a lumbering lion such as you to come with me?"

In pure lioness form Koka circled Hakan, her body so close to his that she brushed against his at times. "How dare you insult me in such a manner." Her body language quickly changed at that moment as she rounded upon Hakan's shoulder. Not hesitating a moment she rose up and sank her claws into the lions thick mane, causing no pain at all with the motion. Using Hakan's large bulk she balanced herself on her hind legs as she whispered in his ear. "You are a fool. I would take such delight in shredding you the pieces yet you want to travel as a companion with me." She purred ."Even my own daughters left me to my ways, unwilling to be around me anymore." With a small shove, all four of Koka's paws were back on the ground and she finished her circle to stop in front of the mottled gray male.

He smiled. It was a ghost of a smile but a smile none-the-less.

She whirled to face him and he automatically leaned back, not wanting her claws to find purchase in his face. He needn’t have worried, since it seemed she wanted to intimidate him without using her claws.

“For company, maybe?” He laughed as she circled him, though he kept his eyes on her at all times, turning his head from side to side in case she decided to lunge for him again. He wouldn’t have put it past her.

Then she moved swiftly and he turned his head to see her lifting herself. Her claws fixed into his mane and he braced himself to balance her better against him, not wanting her to try and use this to knock him off his paws.

“It wasn’t an insult, lady.” He replied, seriously now. “And yes. I know quite well that I’m a fool. I left my children on their own and turned away from a lioness who could very well have been the one. Now, I’m alone and without purpose. I’m the greatest fool that ever lived.” He snorted and met her eyes as she rounded to face him again.

“The world has turned its back on us, Koka.” He replied. “I’ve wandered for many weeks, many months and not found a rogue to match my standards. I have ached for a fight, for my skills to be tested, and you did just that.” He smiled. “Yes, you might kill me if I come along, but that’s part of the excitement, isn’t it?” His smile grew wider. “What’s life without a little risk? What is the point of life if you don’t have to fight to save yourself?” He purred.

“Besides, with your speed and my strength, who could hope to defeat us? Face it, assassin, we make a good team.” He leaned forwards then, his eyes glistening with mischief and a purr at his throat. “So what do you say? Whenever you’re angry, irritated or stressed I’ll be there at your side, willing to put myself at risk for the thrill of adrenaline.”

“Hm?” And he leaned closer, almost as if her were going to nuzzle her.

"We're not that much different." She thought about her previous 'mate' and the daughters that had left her.

She couldn't argue with him. The world had turned it's back upon them and the only thing they could do was claw their way to where they wanted to be, and where Koka wanted to be was the top. The question was, was she willing to share the position on the top with this male? That was something that would be left unanswered for some time. Tolerating Hakan for the time being wouldn't be an issue. In truth, Koka found his spirit and fighting abilities quite intriguing and it certainly was enough to keep her entertained, but she wasn't about to tell -him- that. Compliments would come far and between.

Another good point was their abilities as a fighting pair. Him with his warrior-like abilities and she, the assassin, would make quite the competition to anyone who dare challenge them, or just piss them off. That was something that made the tip of the lioness's tail twitch with anticipation. This Hakan could be the first ally that could help her towards the coveted title of a leader that she so wanted.
