Kay had decided to take a day off and enjoy nature...and hopefully not get too involved in studying to lose sight of the beauty of the first day of fall. It was a bit nippy, sure, but his neck was warmed by his hair, and his arms by his jacket. he sat by a pond, watching dying leaves float on the surface and circle lazily. It reminded him of that movie...American Beauty? The whole thing about the bag in the wind. He sighed and flopped down on his little blanket, pulling a peach from his picnic basket. It was such a nice day...

Where the teacher was enjoying the cooler weather, the poor nautilus boy as decidedly not. Having a shell that weighed more than the rest of him meant that poor Laial's clothing options were rather limited. Shivering, he rubbed his bare arms as he slid by, his jaw set.
Stupid Evan. Stupid autumn. Stupid cool breeze.
He trudged past on his way to find someplace warmer, though his eyes fastened on the other. "Lucky bugger..." he mumbled, mostly to himself, with a pout.

Kay looked up and watched the strange kid pass. ...hmm. Looked familiar...
"Laial?" It was just a try, and if he was wrong he was sure to sound like an idiot, but kids with DNA like this stuck out to him. Interesting biology indeed.

He hadn't been expecting to be called out to -- Laial froze in his tracks, eyes turning to the other as if guilty. He hadn't meant to swear -- really, he wasn't even aware of it, it was just that sometimes Evan said it, and he'd picked up the habit...
"Yes sir...?" he asked, carefully. The only person older than him he would disrespect out of hand was Evan, after all.

"Oh, good," Kay said, giving a little laugh and standing. He offered his hand to Laial, although he didn't move any closer, "I was afraid maybe I had the wrong name. I'm Kaydon. The new biology teacher at DCorp."

"Oh." For a moment, Laial considered not taking the hand, but then finally he put his smaller, grey hand in the teacher's, peering up at him with a proud smile. "It's nice to meet you, sir... how do you know me...?" His head tilted curiously.

"Well, I make a point of trying to learn all of the children's names, at least, before I have them as students," Kay said with a smile, giving the boy a strong hand shake in return, "Would you like to join me? You look cold. I have some hot chocolate."

Ooooh... hot chocolate...
"Of course. As long as you're not just some kind of regular stranger. My dad would kill me." Laial wiggled his fingers after the handshake, surprised, then shifted his weight from foot to foot a bit. "As long as you're a teacher it's okay, though."

"I'm really a teacher," Kay said with a nod and a laugh, pouring a cup of hot chocolate from a thermos. He offered it to Laial while he dug for his ID in his pocket. Hrm...ah! He held it up. See? DCorp teacher.

Leaning in, Laial peered at the ID, then looked up at the man... then peered at the ID again. Scrunching his nose, he thought a moment, then finally took the cup of chocolate, holding it in both small hands and peering up at Kay above the rim as he snuffled at it. "Okay. Since you're a teacher and all," he conceded, "I guess I can trust you. What are you doing out in the cold?" He tasted the chocolate carefully, warily.

Kay flopped back down to his blanket and poured himself a cup of the warm liquid, sitting with it in his hands.
"I love the fall."

"Oh... well, all the colors are pretty," Laial conceded after a moment, and carefully sat down at the opposite side of the blanket, unsteady because of his shell. "But it's too cold to really be comfortable. And I won't be able to swim in the winter, either." His cheeks puffed out with childish disappointment.

"Sure you could. There's a pool in the park and rec, indoor. It's open year-round." Kay sighed and stared up at the blue-blue sky and the sanitarily white clouds. Mm, it really was a nice day...

"I meant at home," Laial said archly, watching the rather spacey man staring at the sky. "Ev-- I mean, dad, has a pool in the back yard, with big spotted goldfish in it, and they nibble my toes." He sipped his drink again, letting it warm all the way down to his belly.
