"Tryyysst!"

Rysha was in her small bedroom, sitting in front of her mirror and slipping a second pair of rings through her ears. She was preparing to leave for dinner with Ragu for a couple hours. It had been awhile since they'd been able to go out, after Tryst abruptly joining the "family," as it were.

She couldn't get Riley to look after her; they were moving into a small house a few minutes away from the current apartment within the week. The result being that Riley was otherwise occupied, and Emmet was at Romeo's for the night more then likely.

Rysha had managed to talk to the doctors at the corporation, and got a phone number for a teenager that could babysit Tryst for a couple hours. His name was Laial, trustworthy kid, yadda, yadda, yadda. He was supposed to be getting there in a few minutes.

"Tryst!" She called again, standing up and grabbing her bag before going into the small kitchenette/living room area. Tryst was lying on the couch, her tail curled around the wood armrest, watching the TV sitting on the bookshelf across from the couch.

"Hun, the babysitter will be getting here soon. You know the rules, right?"

"Early bedtime, no bad TV shows, and no snacks." The little girl said without looking up from the TV, laying stretched out on her belly. "An' be nice to the 'sitter." She added, finally looking over her shoulder at Rysha with a cheerful smile.

"I know the rules, mama." She sat up, leaning over the back of the couch with her tail sliding down to curl around the couch leg. Her mother was dressed nice, in a slinky black dress that complimented her figure, and black high heeled shoes that drew attention to her calves. Her auburn hair was up in a messy yet fancy looking bun, and bits of jewelry glinted from her ears and fingers, even as Rysha smiled warmly at Tryst.

"I know you do, love. Just checking." Hopefully the babysitter would be here soon.

Evan had instructed him to 'be nice' -- admonished even, Laial thought, bitterly as he trudged toward the stranger's house with a sigh, his red head down and a sulky frown on his lips as he swung the keyring to Evan's house at the end of a tentacle. The writer had said that working for his own spending money would 'build character', whatever that meant. It wasn't as if he asked him for money very often. His adoptive parent had even packed a bag with games and small toys to entertain the child with. Honestly, as if the child would lack such things! Laial had even had to leave Heiko behind because the leviathan would have such trouble getting across all the stupid, hot pavement between Evan's house and Rysha's apartment.

"Stupid man, and stupid money," groused Laial as he clicked up the walkway, waddling faintly -- it had been a long walk, and even though he was, as he would have liked it put, 'growing up', his shell still weighed more than he did, and his favorite flipflops were rubbing blistered spots on his small grey feet. "She better pay well and the kid better behave."

Finally he was headed up to the door, and he checked the map that Evan had drawn for him -- the number was marked and he was exhausted, annoyed, and banging on some stranger's door without reason simply wouldn't do. Laial's pride puffed and he lifted his chin as he stared down the door -- he wasn't exactly large and grand, after all, so such a thing was rather intimidating.

Still, he had to knock sometime, and lifting the hand that wasn't burdened with a bag, he banged as hard as he could on the door, wiggling his toes uncomfortably.

Rysha turned to look at the door once she heard the knocking sound, and she opened it to see who was there. She could only assume it was another lab-child, because of all the tentacles and the...Shell. She gave him a friendly smile, opening the door wider before reaching towards the counter for her purse.

"You must be Laial?" She asked, just to be certain it was the right person. Though she wasn't sure why anyone else, genetically-altered human or no, would be knocking on her door. Unless it was Ragu, but she had told him meet her downstairs. "There's a list of a couple numbers on the fridge if you need anything. Top one is mine, the other one is for my friend Nikomas."

She was speaking in a rush as she made last minute grabs, then, standing in the doorway she paused briefly. "Bedtime is nine, only cartoons for the TV, and no junk food." Rhysha said with a smile, before giving a wave and shutting the door with a "Love you Tryst, be back soon and be good."

Tryst watched the whole hurried exchange, or rather, one sided conversation, from the couch. Her hands were curled over the back of his, peeking over it so her nose and up was visible over the couch back. Her babysitter looked funny. He had a big weird thing on his back.

Her tail wound around one of the couch legs, before uncurling pulling back up to to the couch, winding underneath and around her lower half. "So your name is Laya?" She asked, not entirely certain how to pronounce his name. Rysha had spoken so fast, Tryst didn't get much of it.

"I'm Laial -- yes --" he tried to get a word in edgewise around the hurried woman's quick speech, but before he could come up with any questions, she was out the door and his mouth was open, strange eyes open wide and bewildered.

"Well, that went well." Laial deflated, then he turned hastily when the little feminine voice spoke up. His tentacles hastily withdrew into his shell in a defense reaction. "Er... hello... yeah, I'm Laial..."

He felt rather off-balance, and he let the bag he'd brought thump down onto the floor. He was -eleven- now, he could do this! He could! He lifted his chin a little. "And your name's Tryst, huh?"

Tryst giggled as the boy turned to her, a sweet smile on her white face as she nodded. "Yuppers, I'm Tryst. I have a twin brother named Emmet, but he's with pops right now." She said, pulling herself forward and sliding off the couch, coming down onto the floor on her belly before using her tail to push herself up to shoulder-height on Laial.

"So whatcha got planned, Laya?" She asked, shortening his name since it was easier to say for her, having noticed the bag fall onto the linoleum floor.

Thank every fish in the sea. There was only one. Even if she did seem well-behaved right now, Laial was sure that she would sprout another head or four and attempt to eat the couch before the tenure of his hiring was out. "My dad made me bring a bunch of games and toys and stuff," he muttered selfconsciously, bending to open the bag. "Stuff like Snakes and Ladders, and... modeling clay. Stuff like that."

She tilted her head to the side slightly, a little frown on her face. "What's snakes an' ladders?"[/collor] Tryst asked, watching him as he knelt in front of the bag, seeing various colored objects inside. She wasn't sure what clay was either, but for some reason she thought of play-doh. Was that clay stuff?

Tryst squatted down, her fingers on the tiled floor, her hair falling over her shoulders as she watched. "So what kind've animal are you?" She asked curiously, looking up at his face with the gray skin and odd eyes.

"Snakes and ladders is a game... a kid game," Laial said, a little archly, smirking a bit. "A board game. My dad said he used to play it a lot when he was a kid." A tentacle rather carefully slid out from the shell where it had been hiding, curling around one shoulder as if to peer at the snake child, curious and inquisitive.

When the other made mention of his animal side, Laial paused, then announced proudly with a big grin, "I'mma nautilus! I can swim really good and breathe underwater. Also, I can hide in my shell pretty good..." He surveyed Tryst for a moment, and then grinned. "You're a snake. Do you know what kinda snake you are?"

Tryst stuck her tongue out when he defined it as a "kid game," but she couldn't help the interested look sneak onto her face as she peered into the open backpack, trying to catch of a glimpse of this "snakes and ladders" thing. WA board game? Did they play with boards and ladders or something?

"Is a naw-ti-luss like a snail or something, 'cept in the water?" She asked him, looking back up before a wide, happy smile came to her face in answer to his. "Uh-huh, I'm a loo-si-stick ball python, with blue eyes." She said proudly, sitting back and holding her arms behind her neck. "My brother is a lucy too, but he's got black eyes with red slits. I got black slits."

Letting Tryst wait for a moment, Laial finally pulled the game out -- it was brightly colored but looked a little battered. Evan had got it at a secondhand shop, but that was good enough for him. Somebody else had actually liked it before him -- which got him thinking a bit about what the kid that had it before him would be like. But that was secondary right now.

"I'm not some silly snail...!" Slightly indignant, Laial's tentacles flicked a little more quickly. "That'd be like me calling you a worm," he explained, a little poutily. "A nautilus is... well..." He couldn't for the life of him think of any better description than a snail in the water, and that made him even more surly. Finally giving up, he just continued pouting, and plopped the cans of modeling clay out on top of the board game, buying himself time to think. "I guess I'm kind of like a snail but I can swim, and I have tentacles too. Snails don't have those," he announced proudly.

If Tryst's pointed ears had been larger, they probably would have drooped as she ducked her head with a pouty expression on her face. "Sorry for calling you a snail, Laya." She said softly, her hands behind her back as she looked up at him.

He seemed to be happier after a moment, though, and so she diverted her attention to the game board. "It's colorful. How do you play?" She asked curiously, squatting to look at the board game box under the play-doh sort of stuff. The side of the box read Snakes and Ladders, though it looked worn out, as if it were used often or just old.

"It's okay," Laial said magnanimously, reaching out to pat the top of the pale snake-girl's head. "If you want, I can teach you to play and we can try..."

Sitting down, he shed his sandals and opened the box, setting the top aside and taking the board out, laying it out for them. "Which of these do you wanna be?" he asked generously, holding out the pieces cupped in the palm of his hands with a small smile.

She stuck her tongue out as he patter her head like she was a baby, but her attention was quickly snatched away by the board game as he took it out. It certainly was colorful, albeit slightly faded.

Tryst looked at the pieces he held in his hands after he set the board up, and reached forward for the one with bits of blue on it. "Can I have this one?" She asked, looking up at him from her now sitting position.

"Okay," said Laial with a smile as he chose the pink one, plopping the two of them down where they belonged, at the starting line. The rest, he discarded into the small tupperware Evan had found so that Heiko wouldn't eat the pieces on accident, and sealed the lid conscientiously. "Do you know how to roll dice and stuff?"

She watched him pick the pink piece, before setting them both down on a line with the word start. She looked back up at him, head tilted slightly and her hair falling over her shoulder.

"I just shake 'em in my hand and let go, right?" Tryst asked; she hadn't played many board games, but she'd watched Rysha and Ragu play some with friends before, so knew what dice were at least.
