I have been studying and looking at many artists that i like (i like metal) and in particular my favorite is Alexi Laiho. His style of playing is amazing and i love his tone. For a long time i thought he had a thick distortion tone but i can't tell anymore because now people have been saying he plays in a crunch tone. If someone could help and tell me the difference as well as tell me which he plays that would be great. I am trying to get his tone and eventually of course develop my own. By next year i'm going to get his guitar as well as a couple of pedals so i would like to know if i should get a crunch pedal.

That helps but i'm still kinda confused on what i should do to get his tone. I have a line 6 III spider amp...i don't know whether crunch or metal would be the right channel. Plus i probably will get a better amp and buy a pedal...but thats my question... what should i get crunch or distortion.

I just did a couple minutes of studying, and played a few Laiho riffs on my Line 6 Spider III 15, and the Metal channel sounded closer.

Have you looked on Line 6's website to see if there is a patch or setting that you can download? I know for the spider valve someone on the Line 6 forums created a spreadsheet that was modifiable and people were uploading their patches. Can't download them but it's easy enough to twiddle the knobs on my amp.
