They were so close. Dogo was at the entrance to the cave they'd taken shelter in that night. Her front paws 'kneaded' the rock under them, a feral grin on the leopard juvenile's face. They were so close to having enough creatures to go to the lands Moto had found. Yes....

And then the demons would regret all the harm they'd done. They would regret taking her mother's second son. They would regret the pain they'd caused Dogo, the scars they left on both her and her mother. Dogo would return the pain they'd caused three-fold. She would be Karma's punisher to them.

Dogo stopped kneading the rock and rolled onto her back. Foolish, foolish demons. She would help destroy every last evil one.

Tara lay not far behind her adopted sister, orange-amber eyes focused on the rocky wall to her left. They had not been the only ones to find shelter here before. Paintings in blood and berry juice littered the wall, testaments to the occupants of times past. One image was always catching her attention...A single bloody paw print.

She looked to one of her own paws, frowning. Soon enough, her own paws would leave bloody prints. And the blood would likely be both her own and that of demons. The gray leopon shook her head and looked to Dogo.

The leopard looked....anxious...excited. Tara crept foward, curious.

Moto had found it harder and harder to sleep these days. Nightmares of her second son's cubnapping were common. So, too, were nightmares from her cubhood and nightmares of things she did not understand. But they frightened her. Oh dear Karma, they frightened her. Opening a single eye, rather tired of trying to sleep, she watched two of her children curiously.

Tara and Dogo had always seemed to have a strange sort of...understanding of one another.

Dogo's ears twitched and she looked back over her right shoulder, her good eye meeting the amber-orange gaze of her gray adopted sister. She nodded in acknowledgment, then turned her gaze back to outside.

Night had fallen, and the moon looked pregnant in its fullness. The stars shone brightly...perhaps brighter than normal. And all the beauty of it masked something darker.

"Such a lie..."

Tara stopped beside Dogo, her own fluffy side touching the leopard's scarred side.

"Nope." She pointed to the shadows in the night with a dark paw. "Shadows are demons." That same paw now pointed to the sky. "We are stars and moon." She put her paw down and nuzzled Dogo. Only to her family would she show such affection. "We chase away shadows."

Yes, evil things lurked in the dark of night...but so did they.

Dogo blinked and followed her sister's paw with her half-blind gaze. She was right....

"We are the light in the darkness...Just like mother said." She purred and leaned into her sister a little. "We'll chase the shadows away."

It was...almost strange. Dogo barely remembered a time when she would have never been beside this strange little family of hers. A time when she had no father or mother and she was content to roam the savanna, digging. But now...

Now she had sisters, one of whom she was attached to in silence, the other by the heart...and brothers, boys she didn't really mind. And a mother and father. She'd come a long way from that lost cub.

Tara nodded. "We are." She leaned into her sister as well, just enjoying the presence of someone who understood. "We will win..."

They would win, and they would get Bavu back, no matter how long it took. She would have her younger brother back. She joined Dogo in her purring...one sound she wasn't awkward in making.

Moto smiled. Dogo, despite her gruffness, was fitting in just fine. And that phrase...yes. 'Light in the Darkness.' That would be the name of her fledgling pride. The Mwako'bi'Giza.

"You two should be sleeping soon, little ones. We have a long day ahead of us tomorrow."

"Yup. And the demons will regret all the creatures they've hurt."

Dogo's purring stopped and her fur stood on end as she heard her mother's voice. She looked back with her good eye and smiled sheepishly...her version of a 'sorry mother'. She nudged Tara and stood, padding back to where the others slept.

She was a bit sleepy.

Tara looked back to her mother, almost blankly...but then she smiled awkwardly.

"Yes, Mother." She stood and followed Dogo, nuzzling her mother first. She was a fighter, a hunter certainly...but she was such because her mother needed it. And Tara would do anything for her mother.

Moto gave each juvenile a lick on the top of their heads as they passed, a proud smile on her muzzle. Her beautiful little ones...Even if Dogo was not of her blood, she was of her spirit. Her little Amazon huntress. "Sleep well, little ones." She leaned into her mate's warmth a bit, taking comfort in his great bulk.

"Tomorrow is a big day...a big day indeed." She let sleep overcome her at last. Perhaps she should encourage her cubs to talk amongst themselves before sleep took them...

Dogo lay down not far from her mother...and couldn't help but feel safe. Surrounded by her new siblings, her mother and father...

She would grow strong. Strong enough to protect them, and keep them safe, just like they were doing for her. She purred and curled into a ball of fluff, happily drifting into sleep.

Tara curled up along her mother's side. It was small moments like this that made her forget how much her family hurt. Small moments where everyone was at peace and they felt...normal. As normal as a family of leopards and lions and half-breeds could feel.

She smiled as she drifted into sleep, looking forward to what the sunrise would bring.
