Snorting the water from her nose, Hakumei giggled silently to herself. Her body was cold, almost at that point were it became too cold to be fun, but for the moment, she was more interested in her current game than in how cold she was getting.
She had stumbled over the river that morning, and after drinking deeply and playing in the shallows for a while, she had randomly decided to see how deep it was. Within a few strides she had suddenly discovered that the river was actually quiet deep after all, as she slipped off the shelf in the river bed and found herself up to her neck in the cold water. Though after recovering from the shock, she realised that, while it was deep, it wasn’t that deep.. and she was still touching the bottom. The cool water flowed over her back and against her sides, her coat instantly soaked the moment she had slipped. The ripples that trailed along the surface reached halfway up her neck, so she was almost completely submerged but for her head.
And that had spawned her current game.
With her head lowered till the river lapped at her cheeks, nose barely above the surface, she crept along slowly. Her blue coat matched the river, and her curly ocean-coloured mane swirled round her like bits of froth or blue kelp. Blue and blue… only her eyes were not colour coordinated, amber in black… Yet she could always close them right?
What was she up to? She was….. stalking! Creeping along in the middle of the river, she pretended that she was infiltrating an enemy lair. Each movement had to be smooth, soundless.. the blue water was her camouflage, her highway into the heart of the bandit’s hide-a-way.
She may have been a grown mare now, but she was still young and the playfulness of her foalhood was not far enough behind her for her to resist the opportunity to play.
Now all she needed was someone to play the bandit and let her ambush them!

Walking through the forest, Konoha had been traveling for days and there was no reason for him to stop now. He had told his parents that he was leaving on a journey and they were of course sad but he knew he had to leave. He could not stay where he was now. Picking up his hooves slowly, Konoha had slowed to a stop as he noticed a river in the distance. He was a little thirsty.
Moving towards the river, Konoha didn't even notice the female's head that was to the left of him. He wasn't as aware as he should have been. Lowering his head, Konoha took a few gulps of the cold water. That felt good.
Stopping gave him a chance to think a bit, Konoha wasn't sure why he was compelled to leave but he just had to. He knew that if he didn't then he would highly regret it. It's not like they would miss him very much anyway. It's not like he talked a lot and contributed to much conversation. He didn't understand why his parents had been so upset when he had told them his news.

She swiftly discovered a downside to her chosen camouflage… the sound of the river in her ears was loud, enough that she couldn’t hear anything else over it except the beat of her own heart and the puff of her breath in her lings. So.. closing her eyes was out of the question then.
It was a good job she had discovered it too, as suddenly, the shadow of something big moved up to one side, drawing her attention.
Ah ha! It’s the bandit himself! She grinned under the water, golden eyes rolling to study him even as she carefully kept her head still, body frozen in place under the water’s surface. She felt a twinge of pity for the hapless stranger, as they were about to play the doomed roll of the villain in her game. But, she reminded herself, the Bandit King was a stalwart and solid stallion, a little fright wouldn’t hurt him overly much.
Altering her direction a little she dipped even lower in the water, nostrils flared to breath, the water spray getting in her eyes. But, what ambush was easy? If it wasn’t hard, everyone would be hero, right? Holding her breath she crept closer. She had to be as close as possible if she was to succeed in the capture of such a crafty and experienced bandit as this one!
A shiver shot through her body. She had to do this fast, or she would be too cold to triumph and evil would live to fight another day! … Plus the tales of ‘Hakumei the Huntress’ would be in ruins…
