Well, since I couldn't find anywhere else to put this... here goes.

Anyone else have problem regarding their parents and LOTR, and the interaction of the two? I spent all last sunday convincing my mum that Boromir's brother was FARAMIR, not VLADIMIR, which was Lenin's name. She didn't seem to understand that Vladimir even sounds Russian.
And she's also got this weird misconception that Frodo died at the end... when he sails off. I suppose she thought the ship symbolized dying or something... quite sad, really. And then Dad thought Frodo left because he got stabbed by the Nazgul, and his shoulder hurt. So he left.

gonk

So, any funny moment you want to share?

My little sister left my copy of The Silmarillion soaking in the fish tank for a few days while I was staying with my dad.

I still need to buy a new copy.

(Not parent-related, because my parents frankly don't care about The Lord of the Rings)

It took me a good day to convince my Mommy that even though not practical, a lifesize cardboard Legolas is a must-have! Yeah, that's right, eat your heart out illiterates! I have a lifesize Legolas! MWAHAHAHAHAHA... I feel better. If anything he's a good conversation piece.

My parents are awful when it comes to LotR. My Mommy messed up Elrond and Frodo and they became Elwood and Frolo. That was funny! My dad could care less about any of my interests so I don't talk to him much because I mainly talk about LotR. Despite my Mommy's oopses and various other things, she's quite decent to discuss stuff with when she's in the right mood... Elwood... *snorts*

Hm...my mom read the books when she was in her teens which was...a while ago but the movies brought back her love of LOTR so we're a couple of obsessors, not that she remembers from the books much and I keep explaining things but at least she listens. My dad just smiles and points and says 'oh look, another bow fairy' to make me angry

My parents are AWFUL... my mum won't go anywhere NEAR a copy of either the books or the dvds, saying she "hates fantasies so why would it interest her?"... stare My dad, bless him, has tried, he really has... he tried to read the books (which I'm proud to say are entirely mine!) and got all the way through, but kept asking questions, like...

DAD: "I thought it was Arwen who saved Freddo. Who the hell is this blonde guy?"

ME: "It's Glorfindel, and it was supposed to be him but Peter Jackson cut him out and replaced him with her... *grinds teeth*"

DAD: "And Peter Jackson is?"

ME: "The director of the films."

DAD: "Oh... I thought he wrote it!"

ME: "NO!!! TOLKIEN!!! THE BOOK SAYS TOLKIEN!!!"

DAD: "Right you are! So... why is Freddo-"

ME: "FRODO."

DAD: "-Whatever. Why is he on a horse?"

ME: "Have you been paying any attention at all?!"

DAD: "I got something about a ring, some short people and a world threatening evil... but that's about it..."

ME: scream

stare Parents... rolleyes

Isn't Frolo the evil priest in the book the Hunchback of Notre Dame? 'Twas an unhappy anding... sad

And my dad doesn't follow the storyline, but at least I got him to watch the movie. It's a start... *shrugs* and my mother liked teh movies but won't touch the books even though she's a huge bookworm. If anything, she'll make up absurd names for the characters.
Example 1: Legolas= ''Minga the elfwitch of Lilenthall''
Example 2: Saruman + Sauron= the same character
Example 3: Pippin= ''the naive Scottish hobbit that kills two heroes in one movie''. (noooo... he's not stupid in the books...)

Oh yes, I remember at one point last year I assigned LOTR characters to all my friends... for instance, my vice principal was Sauron, because it seems he sees EVERYTHING! And a guy I really hated was Saruman because "He thinks he's great, but falls and dies." No, that makes no reference to the movie's death version, but is how I say he fell from power and died.

Well my dad reffered to Frodo as "foto" (sounds like "photo") quite a few times, my mum gasped as Gandalf slipped to his apparent doom in Moria, and my aunt thinks Legolas is good looking.

My stepdad read the books when he was younger and thinks that they were long and boring.

My mom remembers a group of people she knew who liked Tolkien's works and they were considered nerds.

That give any sort of a hint?

Hmm...my dad just kind of ignores LOTR as much as possible. My friends are all shocked that with me for a daughter he has yet to even see the movies, but I'm working on him.
Of course, he can't resist annoying me by calling Hobbits "Elfs", referring to Frodo as everything from "Frito" to "Freedid", and constantly making horrible "Legless" jokes, mainly because he's convinced I'm still in the Legolas Fangurl stage. rolleyes

My mum doesn't like LOTR much, but puts up with my gabbling... my dad looks down on me reading any fiction /at all/. domokun

My sister's the one who gets names and blah mixed up. xD And for some reason, she gets Maedhros and Thranduil mixed up.

Well, at least your sister has heard of Maedhros.
My father can understand LOTR (somewhat) because it's also a movie, but I swear, when I mention the Sil, his face goes completley blank, as though he's shutting down or something. sweatdrop
But still, messing up Thranduil and Maedhros? Strange. Very strange. eek

Wow, you poor, poor people. o_O;
My parents both adore LotR. The books, and the movies. Especially my dad. He's the one whom I have to thank for introducing me to the books. 3nodding *gives him a big hug*
My mom likes it too, but she's slightly less knowledgeable.
And my sister, well, let's just say that she tried to enter this guild and put "cuz legolas is hawt!!11" as her reason for liking LotR. xp I don't think she's even read the books...

Awww... poor you. My Dad actually has read the books. He gave me a special clothbound, beautifully illustrated edition of Lord of the Rings. Ah, such a sweet, sweet day it was...
