Fish, Dwayne, and Sunshine were discovering Risk. You know, that board game with the trillions of little pieces and the different countries of the world all parceled up nice and neat? Yeah. Risk. Sunshine had found a battered copy of the game in the market, and a sketchy set of the rules online, and the three of them were figuring out how to play.

"They key to the entire game is Australia," said Dwayne, "I've got a feeling about it." And he deposited three green soldiers in the Outback. Fish was squashed up against him on the couch, which in theory sat five but had a tendency to slope inwards. But that suited them just fine.

"I'm gonna go with Europe." said Fish, posing a few blue soldiers on Greece and Italy. "Just a hunch." Meanwhile, Sunshine was quietly conquering the entirety of Africa.

It was raining, and the oily drops beat a consistent tattoo against the window pane. However, rising above the falling drops was another noise. Pshhh, pshhh... Aerosol.

"What's that sound?" asked Fish. The other young men shrugged. He got up and made his way to the window. The watery place in his mind began to bubble, and he became suspicious. He opened it, leaned out, and narrowed his eyes at the figure on the fire escape.

"What," he asked, "Are you doing to our wall?"

Quinn's eyes widened, but his cans continued to spray as he stared at the boy. "Drawing." He turned his head back to the wall, and seemed to ignore the boy for a moment, until he had finished. "There! Oh, wait. Almost forgot." He bent down and picked up a different can, spraying a small butterfly in the bottom corner of his picture. He stepped back, and grinned.

"Best one yet!" He clapped his hands happily, and surveyed his piece. It was a snake curled in on itself, the Ouroboros, but with an added twist of feathers down its body. Quinn gathered all his bottles up and held them in his arms. "Hm, I need to find a trashcan for these." Finally, he seemed to remember the boy existed. He turned back to the window.

"Hiya! I'm Quinn." He turned his head sideways, slowly. "You have scales! I have feathers! We're both wierd!" He cheered happily. "We should be friends, you know. I'm on your wall, you're...in your window. It's fate." He nodded, as if this were some sort of divine knowledge. Which, it could be.

Somewhere, a feathered serpent god facepalmed.

Fish narrowed his eyes at the boy and wondered if this was a joke. "You mean to tell me," he said, "That you are out here on my fire escape in the pouring rain... tagging my wall?"

He evaluated the picture.

"What the ******** is that?" he asked, and Poseidon burbled a cautionary wave. Thunder rolled somewhere. The god's doing, or...? Fish's expression softened. The kid couldn't be more than ten or eleven, and it was pouring.

"You're gonna get pneumonia," he said, and looked back into the room where the two other men crouched over the board patiently. Well, compared to the other members of their little commune, how much damage could a kid do? Even if that kid was an amateur graffitioso and possible prophet.

"You wanna come in?" he asked.
PostPosted: Fri Sep 19, 2008 9:13 pm

"Sure!" He said immediately. "This rain is a little wet. Though, I suppose that's sort of the definition of rain, ha-ha." He looked around. His only way to get into the building by regular means would be to either climb up or down, and he didn't feel like doing either.

"Hey, stand back, would you?" Quinn waited for the boy to get out of the way, and then took a step back, before leaping forward. He positioned his body at a slight curve, slipping through the window and landing into a nice roll on the other side, ending standing up.

Unfortunately, the people of Australia would never recover.

"Sorry! Sorry!" He stepped off of the risk board and cringed. You shouldn't show off so much, Quinn. "Sorry, Sorry! Oh, now my hair's dripping on the floor! Ah!" He took a few frightened steps back and hit the wall, slumping down to the floor. Calm yourself, Quinn. Breathe deeply. What, now you're my yoga instructor?

Quinn laughed nervously, and waved at them all. "Hiya. I'm Quinn."

Fish closed the window and followed the boy across the room. He sunk back into the couch next to Dwayne, who was intently resetting his pieces. Sunshine, scalp-feathers on edge, fiddled with a cannon on South Africa as if debating the meaning of life. After a long pause, he nudged the bag of purple pieces towards the dripping boy.

"Sunshine," he said. "You know how to play?"

"Fish," said Fish.

Dwayne stationed a last cavalry unit in New Zealand. "Dwayne," he said, with a bit of a protective gesture towards Fish.

Fish, meanwhile, was squirming to get a good look under the couch. "Where'd the dice go?" he asked, his head somewhere near the floor.

Quinn picked up the bag. He looked at the pieces, and glanced at the board. "I think my dad used to play, but I don't really remember." Quinn thought for a second, then pulled out some purple pieces. "Yay, purple!" He began sticking him onto Asia. "I want this one." He placed some pieces on it, then looked satisfied with himself. Mr. Q was not satisfied.

No, no, no. Switch that piece there, and that piece- Wait, why are we even here in the first place? Do you ever REALIZE who the people around you are? No, should I? Yes. Yes you should. They could rape you. And one of them looks like a prophet. It could be a sneak attack. Calm down. Breathe deeply. And what's 'Rape'? Now you shut up, young man.

"Nevermind, I want to switch these around." He switched some pieces around to different parts of asia and grinned. "There we go." He glanced at Fish and Dwayne, then decided to help fish find the dice. "Did I knock them somewhere? I'm sorry!" He went to the other side of the couch and looked under it to try and be helpful. He spotted some dice, though they weren't under the couch. He had kicked them to the wall near where he backed up to. Grabbing them, he poked at Fish with a finger.

"I got them!"

"Huh?" Fish looked up at the boy, and at the dice in his hand, and then twisted his way back onto the couch. The cushions were like quicksand and the more he struggled, the closer together he and Dwayne got squished.

Which really was not a problem.

Sunshine took the dice from the boy and looked over the board setup.

"Well, we don't know, either," he said. Dwayne rubbed his hands together.

"This ought to be interesting," he smirked. Sunshine thought for a moment and then handed the dice back to the boy.

"Youngest goes first," he said.

"Okay!" Quinn rolled the dice. He had no idea what to do with them.

Add troops. There should be a char on the board that tells you how many you get for how many countries, and your roll, and whatnot.

"Aha! Found it!" He pointed at a little chart, and counted up his countries and his roll. He reinforced his troops, but it wasn't nearly as many as he had hoped it would be. He pushed some of his troops in southern asia toward's Australia, confronting Dwayne.

"Fight fight fi-" His stomach rumbled. "-ght. Would you guys happen to have any food?" Quinn seemed unburdened by pride when it came to food. If it was there, he'd eat it, and he didn't mind being a mooch. Even if sometimes other people did mind.

"And also, I really have no idea how to fight. What do we do?"

"We roll dice," intoned Sunshine, handing one to Dwayne, who leaned forward to inspect the board. The look on his face said he sincerely hoped his feeling about Australia was right. Fish nudged him reassuringly. The island was practically a fortress. Quinn's troops couldn't possibly take out all of Dwayne's forces.

The green-haired teen let the die fall, and waited for Quinn to do the same.

Quinn shook the die hard in his hand, and tossed it down onto the board. "Come on, come on!" He closed his eyes, afraid to look, before peeking out to look at the result.

Fish squinted at the dice. Two and three. He looked at Dwayne. "I think you just lost."

Sunshine flipped through the print out of the rules and nodded. "Yeah, you lose one of your soldiers."

Dwayne grumbled something about beginner's luck and removed a piece.

"And you get to move again, Quinn," added Sunshine.

"I'm sorry!" He looked at Dwayne. "You can have one of mine, if you want." Quinn wasn't particularly worried about losing, and he didn't want anyone to be angry with him.

He pondered for a moment. "Uhm, I guess I'll move some of these guys into Europe. Those are yours, right- uhh-" he struggled to remember the boy's name, "Fish? Let's roll!" He shook the die in his hand, and then tossed it onto the ground.

Fish picked up the other die and looked at Europe. The kid couldn't get through his forces there, right? He tossed the little plastic cube, hoping for the best.

And then groaned, because even if he had missed a tie by one, he had still missed. "Alright, looks like you're on a roll," he conceded to the younger boy, and removed a soldier.

Sunshine leaned protectively over his African territories, certain he was next.

"What were you doing out in the rain, anyway?" asked Dwayne, draping a lanky arm around Fish's shoulder.

"Graffitiing our fire escape," replied Fish.

"Oh?" asked Dwayne. "What with?"

"Ha-ha! I'm amazing!" He grinned, and began eyeing his next move. He decided to even it out, and attempt to go at Sunshine next, but he got distracted by Dwayne's question.

"Spray paint," he responded, trying not to emphasize the underlying 'duh'," It isn't brand named- just the cheap stuff from stores around town. I don't have enough money for anything else." Which was true. He didn't have much money for anything anymore. He needed to find a more reliable way of getting money. His mother had been working less and less, and been more and more depressed. He sighed a bit, thinking about it.

"Why? Are you into art?" He was always interested in meeting other artists. "Graffing's fun. It's sort of illegal, but that doesn't stop anyone," He smirked. "Besides, I'm not worried about being arrested. Like they could catch me!" He laughed a bit. "You wanna come see my stuff? The rain looks like it's lessening." He absentmindedly pointed one of his pieces toward sunshine's eastern Africa and rolled one of the die, even though he wasn't paying as much attention at that point.

Sunshine groaned and removed a piece from his territory without bothering to roll. You couldn't beat a six. "You've got some stellar luck, kid."

At the back of Fish's mind, the god was bubbling up like a wellspring.

Do you think he's cheating? Fish asked him.

I'm not sensing any divine intervention right now, said Poseidon. He sounded confused. Maybe the kid was just damn lucky.

"I meant, what were you painting?" asked Dwayne, and Fish and Sunshine exchanged exasperated looks. Their friend was gone to planet art and he would not be back any time soon, sort of like his tagging trips into the under-city. "I know some guys here in the scene, big-time painters - they always like to meet new talent. I do some graffing myself, sometimes," he continued, shrugging like it was no big deal.
