Abel had agreed to meet Sarah in front of Hazel's den that night. In truth, it had been his idea, as he and The Cat had work to take care of, and Sarah had her customers, of course, so he landed softly, silently in a tree near the old bobcat's, waiting for his mate. He wondered what this was for, why they had to come two nights later. Surely if the tonic was supposed to work, it wouldn't need anymore help, right? The large, winged otter shook his head slowly as he sighed. It looked like he would just have wait and to find out.

Sarah hummed softly as she moved along from the pie shop back to Hazel's tree den. Things at the shop were going splendidly and with Abel and the mysterious cat she had enough meat that she scarce had to worry about going out to find more. She smiled as she saw Abel's wings up ahead and picked up her pace.
"'Ello love!" She snuggled happily against him and nuzzles his cheek before turning to look at the gnarled tree. "Whot do you suppose this lil return visit is for?"

Abel smiled as Sarah approached him and nuzzled him. He shrugged his shoulders a bit at her question and lead the way to the tree, knocking on the door with his paw. "I'm not sure, really. We'll just have to find out..." he whispered, touching his nose to her cheek in a small otter-kiss. He placed his paw over one of hers reassuringly and waited for the door to open.

As usual, one of the mini otters opened the door, looking up at the big elder otter and shivering a little before skittering out of the way.
Inside the tree house looked the same as always; cluttered, dark, and a little smoky. Hazel was hunched over a bubbling pot of something or other, but she looked up at the pair when Louis cleared his throat.
"Ahhhh. There's the happy couple now. Very punctual too. I like that. Any troubles the last few days? No side effects from the elixir?"

"No, no side effects..." Sarah looked at Abel nervously and placed a paw over her stomach uncertainly. She moved in a bit more and held back as her muscles gave a little twitch, the desire to hunt strong with all the little otters scampering about.
She pressed against Abel for support and looked at Hazel "We did everything as suggested..." Her eyes were filled with hope.

Hazel smiled, wrinkly lips sliding back over her snaggled teeth. "I'm sure you did. I'm sure you did," she said, nodding. "Louis? Bring out the basket, then."
The little bird fluttered off his perch and headed for a side room. Several of the little otters trailed after him. After a moment, the sounds of something scraping along the dirt floor echoed out of the other room. Before long, the bird and little otters came back into view, dragging, pushing and pulling a large basket with them.
"Here we are, then," Hazel said in an approving tone. "Set it before them, that's the way."
"Easy for you to say," Louis grunted, straining as he tugged on a ribbon tied to the basket's handle.
"What was that?"
"Mrf. Nothing."
After considerable work by her miniature staff, Hazel's basket rested before Abel and Lovett. Inside was something lumpy, covered by and old but soft blanket. The old cat nodded at them. "Go on then. That's for you."

Abel raised an eyebrow as the basket was brought out, fairly confused, but nodded anyways. What could be in that basket? He'd only know once they uncovered it. He put a paw to the blanket, pausing to look at Sarah before slowly pulling the blanket away.

The basket almost looked empty in the low light of Hazel's den but the flickering candlelight was definitely reflecting off of something.
Three somethings, in fact.

Sarah gave a gasp as she gazed into the basket and felt tears p***k her eyes, she knew it was silly to get sentimental, after all the clams couldn't possibly be ready for filling just yet? Or could they? She touched her stomach and gazed at the clams thoughtfully before looking at Hazel, instinct was slowly washing over her. Didn't all mothers place their little ones in clams before they were ready for the world?
She slipped closer and leaned over the basket to lightly touch each clam with approval. "Oh their perfect..."

Hazel smiled kindly (or as kindly as her somewhat-disturbing teeth would allow). "I wish I could tell you all your work was through, pet, but you've one last wait before you I'm afraid."
The old cat padded forward slowly. "These here ... these are special-treated for the pair of you. They'll be fit to hold your little ones, when they come. Special-like, to make sure you don't have any difficulties. Cubs of yours ... with the ... er ... differences between you, they'll have a bit of a struggle ahead of 'em, if you don't mind my being blunt. But you set them up nice and proper in here," she said softly, patting one of the shells with a paw, "and a few days on you'll find they've settled in right nicely and are thriving.
"Not to worry, though. These shells are the finest I could have gotten, thanks to Louis." The little bird puffed up a bit at the praise, and Hazel chuckled as she continued. "And we've treated them real well the past two nights. Now, under the full moon, they should be just nicely ready for you."

Abel felt his heart tighten at the sight of the three, presently empty, clams within the basket. Would they really bee needing all three? He turned his head a bit, to look at Sarah as he wrapped his wing around her, nudging her close with the soft tug of his feathers. "Thank you Hazel, and you too, Louis. For all your help," he said, his smile reflected in his voice, though he was more happy to see Sarah so happy than anything. Everything he was, everything he did was to either make the Lord, or his Sarah happy. Now there would probably three more to take care of, to do everything for. And he wouldn't have it any other way.

Lovett smiled at Abel before looking back at the clams, she wasn't certain she could tear her eyes away from them. She knew it was silly considering they were empty still, but to think that she would soon have them protecting a treasure greater then any pearl. She scampered over and hugged Hazel impulsively
"Thank You, I don't know 'ow I could ever thank you enough..." She pulled away slowly and smiled over the empty clams once more. She could only imagine her joy the day she and Abel would see their pups come forth from those very clams.
She turned back to Hazel her words soft and uncertain. "Even with our...differences, the pups will be alright? They'll be..." She trailed of uncertain what kind of challenges might come from pups of mixed blood.

Hazel inclined her head slightly. "I expect they'll be scrappy little so-and-sos. You get then all safely tucked away in there and, when you see the signs of 'em on the clams, you'll know the danger's all passed." The old bob scratched one ear lazily. "Might take a little longer than with more ... conventional matches. But I think you'll be the type to keep a close eye on them, unless I've misjudged you both."

"We'll take great care, and it's worth any wait..." She pulled the basket full of empty clams close eager to fill them, eager to know her vulnerable pups would be safe. Still the words 'danger's all passed' hadn't escaped her ears, she looked at Hazel nervously.
"Is there anything we can do to ensure their all right? They'll need plenty of warmth right?" She dispaired of doing anything that might harm any of her little ones chances for the world. Too much warmth could be bad, but so could cold, so many things could hurt them in the wide world. Sarah took a deep breath and forced herself to relax, she would do this, she wouldn't let anything harm her children now that she was so very close to getting them.

Hazel shook her head slightly. "I'm sure you'll do everything you can. Considering the effort you went through just to get the ingredients for my soup, I shouldn't think you'll have any trouble. Just use your best judgment. You'll be parents. You'll know what to do."
