Newsletter for September 2008

Hi there, as most of you have already noticed, about a month ago we had a Newsletter thread in our beloved Wannabe Mangaka forum! =D
This time we decided to give it a different approach by mailing each and every one of you the newsletter, it’s more work but we think it’ll also be more effective this way.
Just so you know, our little guild has reached the amount of 81 members heart . That sounds like a whole lot to me, over 70 members who found our guild by themselves and decided that they want to join!
Well, we won’t want to bore you with all kinds official stuff, so we’ll just start of telling you about the new things!



Crew members

As you might have noticed, I have started to talk about the rulers of the guild in we, while at the very beginning, it was just lil old me.
That’s because I’ve hired myself some crew members, people I though would be able to help me rule the guild, and help you with making your manga!

Melanholic
who I am: a 18 year old Lolita from Sweden, with a fancy head and like to draw a lot.

I do love cats more than anything tho.
I have loooots of hidden talents, like;
Baking
Manga drawing (of course)
learning Languages
sewing
insult people
to drink a lot of coffee and tea.
to be able to eat lots but gain nothing in weight.
to conquer every game I come over.
to speak very fast when I want to.
wanna hear more xD to bad I'm lazy to so no more talents : )

Why I decided to join this guild?:
I saw a banner in the art forum and some girl where really bitchy about it, saying it didn't belong there.
well anyway, I clicked it and Joined the Guild,
I wanted to learn and provide knowledge I guess '^^

My specialty and the reason why I'm a Crew member?:
I can draw, have done so for 5 years now.
my specialty is Characters, art and Photoshop.
so any questions in that area, I probably can help you : )

Heya, the name's Hano Mayonaka...


I'm a senior in high school and an aspiring manga-ka, I'm currently working on two mangas, Blood Destiny and Conscious Dream, there's also my portfolio for college.

I joined Wannabe Mangaka because I was a lonely mangaka all alone in GaiaOnline, I was happy to find a guild full of people just like me and I'm sure we will be getting many more members soon... ^^
Wannabe Mangaka is a guild for people who aspire to be great mangaka and end up among the ranks of legends such as Rumiko Takahashi, Osamu Tezuka, Masashi Kishimoto or a group like CLAMP.

As a moderator, I offer help in the field of writing stories and plot techniques. You want aid in making your story awesome and memorable for decades? Come to me...

I'm Aud1o (pronounced audio) Blood.

18 yr old Fireman
I'm into alternative music, indie movies, writing, and sucking at the guitar.
I haven't finished a picture in 2 years, so I spend my time here helping others improve theirs.
In the manga world, I may end up an editor, and possibly publishing out of the coffee shop I hope to open.

The new crew lounge

So now that the guild has crew members, we need a place to come together and talk about the guild. Things that members are talking about, making something like this newsletter, contests, and just to say hi ;].
There’s nothing you really need to know that we don’t tell you guys eventually, so don’t feel excluded or anything^^.



Art critiques and work in progress forum

We decided to make this new forum because the main page was getting to cluttered and hard to overlook. At one point we felt like people didn’t even know where to post so they posted it in the main forum just to make sure everyone would read it sweatdrop .
Luckily that’s all solved now because of this cute lil new forum.
Here you can post all your artwork you want criticized and… other things you want people to give their opinion about^^.

Mascot contest

Reading everything you post, we stumbled upon a thread about a mascot, a mascot for our lil guild.
And with that a contest deciding what the mascot should look like.
It sounded like a great idea, so a mascot contest was established.
The mascot won’t have a great purpose, it’ll show up at the home page of our guild and in banners, other than that it’s ofcourse free to make fan art of it =D.
We have about 4 contestants, and we’re aiming for 8. When 8 have entered we’ll put up a voting poll and.. you know, all the rules are in the contest thread.

HanoMayonaka’s weekly tip

Hano’s own great idea, to make a weekly tip. Every Sunday (or a few days later) he posts a new tip in his sticky on the main forum.
And I have to tell you, he really makes good points with his tips. (but after all, we don’t make just anyone crew member)

School and work starting again… how do we deal with it?

Maybe you’ve noticed already, but if not, you’re bound to find out; drawing was a hell lotta easier when you had all the time you wanted.
A dozen of artists from this guild, along with myself, made the easy and clever decision to start working and drawing on our manga when the summer break started, so we didn’t have to worry about school and making time for it and such.
Doing some preporations beforehand like developing the story, characters and when the summer starts, start drawing. It’s a really good way to start your manga, but on the other hand.. It does kind of get you into a shock when school starts again. Changing your drawing pattern and skedule. Maybe forgetting all about it because you’re so busy with all your assignments, and also have to work three evenings!
But in the end (if you’re an honest artist and love to make your art like pretty much all of us here), you’ll regret not taking time, even if it’s just a few times a week, to work on your manga and get yet another page to be so proud of.
So I’ve questioned our smart new crew members, and here’s what they thought would help us get started again:

MelanHolic:
Just because the school has started doesn't mean you don't have time to practice drawing D:
balancing school, friends, drawing and maybe work isn't that hard D:
if its really your dream then you make time for it.
but always do your homework -.-
since drawing manga isn't a excuse for not have done your homework in time :/
always keep something to sketch on with you ^__^ and things will be fine.

Aud1oBlood:
Don't forsake what you enjoy just for school. Make time (sacrifice sleep) for it.

Hanomayonaka:
Keep drawing..! There is no such thing as a perfect artist, one can always imporve themself! Take critique, [even the harsh critique] and use it constructively... Even if that person is relentless and promises to never like your work..!

Though Hano sounds like he’s got some really bad critique from a person he cares about and Melan sounds like a schoolteacher at some point, they're right!
Here’s some little advice from me to, I’m not that highly experienced in drawing manga but it’s just something that helps for me.

Mischievous_pixie:
If you’re having problems keeping work, school, hobbies, friends and drawing apart, make a skedule. Keep an agenda; take Tuesday and Thursday to have fun with your friends, work Wednesday and Saturday, do most of your homework in the evenings (or before dinner if possible) and draw Monday, Friday and Sunday (apart from the doodling and sketching during school).
Skeduling everything is the best way for me to keep everything in a straight line and this way I don’t feel like I have so much to do and so little time :3.

Going to school again is kind of a culture shock after the summer break, but hating it won’t get you anywhere^^.

It’s me again, your guild captain Pixie, with the newest issue of the Wannabe Mangaka Newsletter!
This issue we’re showing you the new subforum, the manga class, the winner of the Holiday card contest and much more!

Manga class
The manga class is having it's third assignment, hurray!
This month we will all be going to make an actual manga page!

Well, the opposite is true, in one page you can tell a little of what’s happening and how the characters feel about it.
What could happen from that page on, we leave to the imagination of the reader.

Doesn’t it sound interesting to ask others what they think might happen in the other pages? You probably already had an idea, but then you can see it from another side. See how the readers think, how different their fantasy lies.

Last time we made a banner for our manga, or a manga, to learn how you can make small advertisement and the first assignment was to make yourself a front (from a story you thought of yourself).
So obviously we have interesting and fun assignments eh *wink wink*.

It's always a good way to learn things, by making something you normally don't do yourself and it's interesting to see how other 'students' have made their assignments.
After each assignment period hits its end, you get a PM with what we (the all powerful and specialized mods) think about it, and if you make your assignments as good as you can make them and try hard, you can even be chosen to be the top student!
The assignment will end at the end of the first week of February, and a week after that a new one will arise.

Cleaning up Work in progress?
yes, there are a lot of inactive/finished threads there so its time to clean it up, but we can't just move stuff without letting the owner know.
So we want members to tell us if we can move their threads, or we will just move them and then PM the owner.


Under construction has a new purpose!
So you all know the cute lil subforum on top of the list, whom was empty!
Place for a new subforum that is, so we've done a little brainstorming to what could happen in this exciting new forum (in a sticky on the main forum, so you could post your ideas to)
And I made a voting poll! We didn’t get that much response, but that’s okay cos most people liked the member forum idea the most^^.

What’s a members forum?
A forum for you guys ofcourse!
What kind of things can you post in this subforum you wonder?
In the members forum, you can post:
-your home made contests
-your home made manga classes
-things like, continue this manga
-let's make a calendar together
-And everything you can think of that’s artsy, not to ‘off topic’ and doesn’t belong in another forum!

If you’re not sure if it belongs there or not.. just rebel and put it there anyway (scaredycats can always just ask one of the mods ;]), if we don’t think it belongs there but somewhere else, we’ll simply let you know.

The members forum!


Our poor little main page..
If you haven’t seen it yet, all the awesome homemade manga fronts who were on the main page, got thrown out (to say it gently). There seems to be a glitch in the homepage that creates spaces itself.. so that kind of ruins the links and makes everything look like hell.
We made a new announcement with the manga fronts in it so people can still watch them and are ofcourse together with a link to the project thread.
As soon as the homepage works again, I’ll be sure to put everything back up!
There have been rumors that there’s going to be a new guild update by gaia, so let’s keep our fingers crossed!

“Who is the greatest/biggest..” threads.
Smart enlightment of Aud1oBlood showed us that most of those kind of threads don’t have that much to do with making a manga, or manga itself (mostly it’s about anime).
So we’ll be moving them to the Off topic subforum.

The Holidays

Though there wasn't a Halloween or Thanksgiving contest, there will be one for Christmas. The Contest will be posted on November 20th, as an announcement. It will be similar to last year's contest, if you've been around long enough to remember. The prizes will be as follows:

First Prize Will Receive 25,000 gold! Oh My!

Second Prize won't have something quite as extravagantly huge, but will receive 15,000 gold

Third Prize, hey, I'm a generous person with gold to spare. 10,000 gold Will be awarded to third place

The first runner up will Receive a mild 5000 gold, and maybe we'll receive enough entries.

Again, though, this is just to show you the prizes, so don't start yet! As I already said, the Contest will be posted some time November 20th, so keep your eyes open!
