Estelle watched the night sky as the stars twinkled softly above. She was always fascinated by the vastness of the world above the cloud line. Her mind wandered to events from her past as she recalled to herself scenario that lead her to this field in the first place. She lowered her head, resting it softly on her front legs, her chin felt cold due to being exposed to the breeze for so long.

Closing her eyes her thoughts roamed to all the things she wanted to achieve in life, as the fantasy of a family of her own dangled before her eyes, she knew that it would never happen as she felt incapable of letting anyone close to her. Sighing she opened her eyes, they felt heavy and a little groggy after her long day chasing dragonflies and splashing in the nearby river.

Suddenly a sound caught her attention, it sounded like rustling among a near by bush, curiosity enthralled her as she clambered to her feet. Perhaps it was a small creature that she could talk to for a little while?

Walking towards the disturbance her heart began to race, perhaps it was a less than friendly creature that would strike her if she approached? Or perhaps it was just the wind playing tricks on her? The rustling happened again indicating that there was definitely something residing within. Reaching the lush green bushes she slanted her head softly to the right, watching and waiting for any signs of life. None came. Bored of waiting she lowered her head into the bush.

“Hello? Anyone there?”

There where tiny footprints in the soil but no sign of the creature that had made them.

It had been with considerable difficulty that Raniero had discussed such subjects with his father. Neither father or son had been entirely comfortable with the topic of heirs or mates given the current state of affairs. Raniero had always been aware that he was his father's heir... Despite having a younger brother, Matiusu had no interest in adopting his father's position and as such the way had been clear. However, it had been with a soft sigh that Paramekia had taken the rumours of his heir's apparent 'preferences' into consideration. According to the rumours his son had become a mare, or rather...had adopted the role of a mare which had come as a shock to most of the creatures in Paramekia's immediate vicinty.

Alas, when Raniero had returned home and had fully explained the reasons behind his uncanny appearance all had become clear. Paramekia had respected his son's research, had accepted that in order to succeed he needed to adopt an unlikely appearance. That being said, what Raniero hadn't quite anitipcated was for his father to accept his unwillingness to play the 'courting' game. Raniero was by no means romantically inclined given that he found such things to be impractical for him. Thus, his father had simply advised him that he was advised to produce at least one heir even if nothing more came of it.

Paramekia would raise his grandchild if necessarily.

Nevertheless the blue-panda stallion was more than a little perturbed by the whole thing. He respected and understood his father's words...but what irritated this particular stallion was the time it would take him to find the necessary 'tools' to give his grandfather what he sought. He would either have to find a mare who was prepared to accomodate him, or he would have to go through that arduous process of courtship - a process that grated on his patience and went completely against his abrasive personality.

Therefore it should have been unsurprising that he had been less than inclined to move from his current position. Having removed his feminine guise for the time being, he continued to stare at his reflection and ponder his options. His father hadn't specified a time in which he was to do this, he had simply advised it. However it still remained a fact that it was going to completely butcher the time that Raniero had to study. This evening was one of those rare moments when the stallion expressed his emotions as opposed to keeping them underneath a facade of calmness.

Alas his reverie was interrupted by a rather soft voice and his ears pivoted towards it. Irritated at the disturbance, he only shifted his weight slightly to glance over his shoulder. Amber eyes caught sight of the yellow mare and then he simply shook his head. Did he honestly have time to 'entertain' anything?

A pause.

With a soft sigh he reminded himself that research was research and as such, a foul mood could be cast aside in order to observe another's actions. As a result of such thoughts his foul expression soon vanished and was replaced with that recognisable guise of stoism. There would be no soft voices or coos in response to her almost rhetorical question - instead she would receive a rather scathing and unimpressed one instead.

"To alert another to your location at this time of night will ensure you end up dead."

Not exactly an ideal way to offer one's greetings...

Disappointed by the lack of a creature that had produced such tiny yet perfect footsteps in the mud she raised her head; the breeze chilled her slightly and carried her hair gently. Sighing she looked around, the stars covered the field in a gentle ambiance that lifted her spirits and caused her markings to twinkle slightly.

Suddenly she heard a voice, freezing her heart began to race, skipping a beat every now and then. The words seemed filled with an unmeaning malice, she ran the words through her mind desperately trying to determine there meaning, surely the voice did not mean her harm? Yet she couldn't be sure.

Slowly she turned to face the stranger, her heart still racing and her breath held tight within her chest. Little by little he came into her view, his face seemed stern to her, yet his colourings appeared to allow him to camouflage into the shimmering night sky. Uncertain how to take his appearance and words she spoke softly, her voice still a little shaky as she attempted to suppress her shock and surprise from his sudden appearance in the clearing.

"It's a good job I don't expect to die tonight then."

A small smile pealed delicately over her lips, her hair still catching the breeze and waving gentle, caressing her face like a gentle whisper.

Raniero never took measures to hide himself to view, it simply drew suspicion to him. However he had the inherent ability to 'disappear' from sight. There was no skill in it, but observers all seems to master this art as they matured and developed. He could be in the open, he could be stood so very close to another and they would be completely unaware of his existence. While social butterflies would be horrified if they had such a quirk, for a scholar it was far more useful than drawing an infuriating amount of attention. He didn't need to be disturbed or interrupted as he watched others and listened to their conversations - if he couldn't be seen, he could continue his work unhindered.

Thus, her shock did little more than to cause the blue stallion to raise his brow higher still. His expression remaining all but unimpressed by her carelessness and what appeared to be an attempted jest. It was unfortunate for her, but Raniero lacked any semblance of a sense of humour for the most part. He could laugh and tease in the company of his father but in public he was completely stoic. He seemed indifferent to everything, merely raising a brow or snorting in evident distaste as whatever subject he had been observing did something he deemed foolish. That being said, such silly moves did help him to categorise individuals.

As a result, he remained rather silent for a time being as he continued to watch the mare. Her lack of composure indicated that she wasn't quite as observant as some. His immediate assumption would have been that she was somewhat naive but he refrained from drawing such conclusions until he had more substantial evidence. And so, it wasn't long before he placed a hypothesis before himself and opted to prove or disprove it according to how the mare chose to act - although her response was rather predictable...

"If you did not anticipate your demise, then why alert another to your location in the first place?" he retorted coolly, shaking his head somewhat as he finally returned his gaze to his own reflection. Had he been any other stallion it was likely that he would have 'admired' her appearance for a little longer, she was a rather pretty thing but alas...one so void of interest in such departments could dismiss it with ease.

"It seems somewhat hypocritical of you to make such statements," he finished, flicking idly at his reflection. His expression became skeptical as he examined his own appearance before he shook his head. Why had he been interrupted at such an awkward moment?

Estelle's stance changed ever so slightly as she gently shifted her weight to allow for better balance as she faced the stranger. His words confused her slightly as they spoke of matters that she tended to remove from her mind, finding the silver lining was always her preference. She detested the notion of constantly fearing the unknown, she had been able to stand on her own four hooves for this long after all, and it wasn't always easy. She had been chased from several different places before finding a nice secluded spot that she had called home, from that day to this she had protected it and the creatures that resisted there.

Watching his movements she felt as if every word he spoke was calculated and cunning, as if she was being scrutinised with a fine toothcomb of some description, it chilled her a little at the notion of anyone attempting to 'figure' her out by the first impression along. She frowned vaguely in discontent.

"It can only be hypocritical if I was attempting to claim a high principle, yet I do not expect to die tonight. This has been my home for a while now, I love the creatures that live here and often spend countless night enjoying the enchanting glow of the moon enjoying light conversation."

She blinked twice, her ears twitched slightly as she felt the breeze increase faintly around her; it was a cool as his words.

"What brings you to these parts any way?"

Her smile briefly returned, lighting up her face.

Urgh, general chit chat - how he hated it so. The lack of depth to any conversation amounted to nothing more than an incredible level of boredom and overall discontent. He wasn't one to discuss the weather, nor did he have any particular interest in the changing seasons. Everything that any normal soquili might consider highly interesting had been seen, studied and either noted or dismissed by the scholarly Soquili. It was no wonder that he left such a foul impression on others when he couldn't connect to them on such a simplistic level.

Such was his decision though, to lead a seperate life from those he deemed simpletons. If he so chose he could easily revert to chit chat, could feign the smiles and toss out the usual conversation that was traditional for new encounters. Introductions, laughter and jokes that one had heard more than enough times to have their ears torn off from exasperation. Hmph - he was a practical and honest sort, as such he had no interest in feigning any type of interest regardless of how 'polite' it was meant to be.

Alas his reverie would never be renewed as the mare threw out her response. It lacked the conviction to be taken seriously and as such he dismissed it as naivity. She might have found a secluded spot but creatures could be interrogated and predators were intelligent. He had no time to argue and her safety was not of his concern, she could live in her carefree world and be categorised as such. Unfortunately he had been brought up better than to completely ignore a Soquili though and after a few moments of consideration he did respond to her.

Albeit curtly...

"Research," was his reply, deliberately vague to conceal its true nature from view. Frankly simpletons had no place to prod and poke at his interests, they failed to understand them and therefore didn't need to know of them. "Though such information is irrelevant for one such as you..."

Anger began brewing softly inside her and she played the image of her ramming him to please her momentary thought of distain and loathing for him, but she suppressed them. He remaindered her of her father, and that thought was not as easy to suppress, she felt as if her past was flooding back into her mind.

Shaking her head slightly she looked away from him for a brief moment before turning back, her eyes attempting to catch hold of his own as if they would give some sort of clue of a difference from her fathers stern and emotionless face. Taking a deep breath she allowed the smile to return to her face, it didn’t matter to her what he thought of her, or how he saw her all that really mattered what how she viewed herself.

"Not much of a talker I see." She resisted the urge to let out a soft giggle but continued to look in his direction. "Though I must say you are an…" pausing she considered the most appropriate response, after all her intention was not to offend him, he hadn’t actually done anything to her and she had the distinct feeling that he could not completely help the attitude he had towards life and the world around him. "…interesting guy."

She looked briefly to the sky; the stars twinkled above her as the constellation of Orion’s belt came into her view. And before she could stop herself she began speaking again. "You remind me of the hunter Orion, he too believed he could take on the world alone." She paused to look back at him. "He said he would study and kill every species of animal on the planet just to please his lust for knowledge...." She knew that he would probably have little knowlegde of the stars so she added cheerfully "...one day you may run into your Scorpion as well."

"I have already met it," he replied, completely unphased by her attempt to assert greater intellectual prowess over him. His amber eyes shifted to inspect her in a scathing manner and then they were gone again. His eyes were once again hidden beneath his ebony forelock and the disinterested expression continued to line his otherwise youthful features. His father hadn't just taught him the basics in life, Paramekia had strived to broaden his son's horizons as much as possible before he flew from the nest. Generally speaking, even if his grasp on certain subjects was not firm he had a decent idea of it.

It was so very easy for him to dismiss individuals for this reason alone. He could predict their reactions and was aware of their desire to 'prove' themselves. How they chose to prove themselves came in a variety of ways but it was natural for them to do so. Very few creatures desired to be viewed as inferior - as a result they reacted poorly. Some acted through defiance and force while others chose the intellectual route and discovered that he simply didn't care. It was old news and simply added to the 'data' that existed in his head... In a manner of speaking he was grateful for their predictable behaviour.

"First mistake is to assume than an individual deems themselves infallable," he pointed out coolly, distancing himself from the mare as he continued to mull over his own private thoughts. "The second is to lecture them based on inaccurate assumptions - you are blind and have much to learn," he finished darkly, glancing over his shoulder to flash an all but sly smirk. Amber eyes glinted against the light of the moon and it was then that he permitted his eyes to meet with her - in all their cold and calculating glory.

"In regards to your observation that I am 'interesting' - tell me something I do not know," he added smoothly and turned around again with another small snort.

She watched his actions closely, she wasn't as good at reading people as he evidently was but there much to be told by the way he held himself, he was proud and conscientious almost as if he was trying to prove himself or live up to some unwritten obligation and expectation that had been thrust upon him unwillingly, and in some small way his words seemed to confirm her suspicions, she shook her head softly dismissing the thoughts, she didn't care much for guessing.

"Well I hope you overcome it then." Her voice was soft with an element of glee incrusted within it; no matter how rude he was going to be to her she would not retaliate. His knowledge in the stars did intrigue her a little, she loved the stars with all her heart, they where the one element that remained constant through out her life despite the ups and the downs. Yet his diminutive snorts did bother her a little, though she dismissed that thought.

She watched, as his motion seemed to indicate that he wanted to leave, she had no reason to stop him yet at the same time she was curious what had brought him to her secluded field in the first place. Taking yet another glance at the stars Orion twinkled magnificently as if reflecting the presence of the stranger before her, she continued to watch them as she spoke, her words where almost dazed as her attention was divided. "I suppose you will object to me asking your name, but I shall any way." Pausing for a brief moment she lowered her head and her eyes followed the grass line as she turned to face him. "What is your name stranger?"

The life Raniero lived was one he had openly and willingly embraced. While he had been born and destined to follow in his father's footsteps he had not be thrust into such a path by force. Every step he took, every decision he made was one he had carefully considered. It was true that he was proud of his heritage and of his talents but he had no desire to prove himself to anyone, even in his immediate social circle. His father was proud of his son's abilities and aware of his quirks, as such Raniero had no reason to strive to best any personal records unless it was for his own gain.

No, this particular Soquili was more than content with his lot in life and found it perfectly acceptable to wander around, accompanied by nothing more than idle musings and the occasional presentation of a hypothesis in the forefront of his mind. His research was for his own satisfaction, an oppotunity to gather information on potential threats or allies at a later date. Should he encounter another of equal intelligence or with similar interests then he was more than happy to share notes - however, such indifference towards others made encounters with individuals of a similar mindset rare.

Alas, those of the Kawani lands most definitely fit into a variety of categories and he had yet to encounter one who slotted nicely into his own. It wasn't something that perturbed him, merely intrigued him and very gently coaxed him into continuing with his research. It was such coaxing and idle musings that often made him adopt peculiar guises in order to succeed - his most recent being that he had dressed and portrayed himself as a mare. His success and the impact he had on a variety of stallions had been both amusing and surprising all at the same time - it appeared many did lack in skills of observation, even up close.

Nevertheless such things were irrelevant as the mare once again attempted to read him and expressed her well wishes. Really, his 'scorpion' was not something he was hindered by. It was a small obstacle to be accounted for, but nothing he couldn't handle. It was more a case of accepting it and working with it that was the issue, he understood his father's wishes but they had come at a somewhat awkward time. When it came to Raniero's issues they tended to revolve around his research and mroe often than not...they were interrupting it.

"Rest assured it will be dealt with," he stated flatly, flicking his tail against his flank as he felt the faint tickle of restlessness upon it. "Though once again you make assumptions that are incorrect, I will dismiss them," oh he was terribly pleasant, decent enough to cast aside potential misunderstandings or mistakes! "I am known as Raniero," he offered after a few moments before falling silent again. It should not have come as any surprise that he made no attempts to discover her identity.

His flat tone did indeed remind her of the loathed image of her father. He was such a harsh creature that she felt as if he drove her away. His image left a darkened smudge in her memories as she attempted with all her might to suppress all knowledge of him, as far as she was concerned she did not have need for a figure like that in her life, independence, free will and a place to call her own was all that she desired from her simple life.

Half listening as her thoughts drifted to all the world around her she heard the soft trickling of running water, closing her eyes she visualised the magnificent flow of perfect blues and greens merging together in swirls of desire as they ventured ever close to the sea. The journey was long and hard with many challenges to be overcome, just like the thousands of droplets before them, there would be those who wished to stop you as well as those who wished to help and she knew to well that distinguishing between the two was not always as simple as it first appeared.

As a frilly her companion had betrayed her, the notion still strung at her heartstrings like an unwanted melody. Shifting it away she tuned back into the immediate world around her, Raniero spoke his name in a manner all too familiar. It was a nice yet strong name that gave her the distinct impression of power, prowess and decisiveness. Her expression changed slightly, although she attempted to withhold her cheerful disposition towards him, she flicked the hair from her face softly and looked to the stars again. Her name meant stars after all but she would not give it to one who card not to ask.

Confusion swept over her face as he spoke, she was not entirely convinced she knew what he meant, perhaps it was that simply that she did not expect him to divulge his name to her or perhaps it was something more than that. Shaking the confusion away to be replaced by tranquillity she wondered what had drawn her to such a conclusion in the first place? Most likely it was his attitude towards her, he seemed to look down upon her although he did not know anything about her, it angered her slightly yet such thoughts needed to suppressed.

She stepped forward faintly as previous thoughts of the nearby river came flooding back, her throat felt parched as if she had not had a drink all day. The stars twinkled above her as she took another step contemplating informing him of where she was going, feeling slightly rude for simply walking off even if he was less than accommodating towards her. Yet rudeness was not within her nature, "Not that you exactly care or anything, but I am going for a drink. If you too need to quench your own thirst I can lead you to the nearby river." And with that her pace increased slightly as she moved graciously towards the rivers gushing banks.

Assuming that he deemed everyone to be inferior to him was inaccurate - no doubt his personality and body language came off as rather arrogant and indifferent but alas. Such was the price he paid for his research, to remain alone as he studied was his greatest desire. Interruptions were an irritation and served little purpose than to distract or slow him down. In essence, he would sooner that people just ignored him (as was the general trend) so that he might pursue all aspects of his studies without them getting in his way. Unfortunately there was always one meddling creature who thought they knew better or worse yet, that they knew him.

Thus, when the mare made reference to his feelings and his preferences something within him twitched. Those of the Kawani frequently swore and cursed one another for leaping to conclusions and for putting words in each other's mouths. How ironic it was for the stallion to therefore hear this mare put words in his mouth. He had made no such remarks regarding how she felt. That part of him that had been raised by his Imperial father was suddenly struck with the urge to say 'how dare you' - instead, he simply regarded her with complete and utter disgust.

To assume he couldn't find his own way was one step too far though...

"You really are unique," he spat at last. "Assuming that you know another's thoughts and feelings just by how they look? No wonder you are alone and forced to endure such solitude," he chuckled and shook his head at the mare's apparent stupidity. "Do not ever put words into my mouth or another's mouth again or it will get you killed, rest assured -" he continued, flicking his tail against his flank. His eyes narrowed to mere slits and then it seemed that his patience and self-control once again kicked in. Something tweaked deep inside and the stallion closed his eyes, deep breaths rippling from the depths of his chest to calm him.

"Do as you please, I have no interest in mundane activities," he was of course referring to her desire to drink. That said he turned his gaze away from the mare and wandered in the opposite direction. He knew the Kawani Lands well... He was aware of every little point on the Lowlands and to assume he did not was an absolute insult. A grown stallion did not need to be led to water and the mare was a fool to assume as much. Allowing his shoulders to ripple, the stallion at last arched his neck slightly and allowed it to crack. He simply did not have the time or desire to be in the company of such a creature when he had too much to mull over in his mind.

Although he did find it terribly amusing that his Father desired him to find a consort within the lowlands, particularly when many mares were like her...

His words carried on the breeze towards her causing her to freeze on the spot, she did not want to be ignorant but his words made her forget all the animosities towards this vulgar creature. Evidently something she had done had finally caused him to show some sort of distinct emotion; perhaps he wasn’t as closed as he hoped to be. After all she imagined that to him she was nothing more than a bug under his hoof. Unable to suppress a small chuckle her expression changed to form a soft grin. She felt that his words where slightly hypocritical, he eyes and mind had previously attempted to deduce everything about her, even though he did not speak openly about it that was much was evident from his actions.

Before she was able to stop herself she spoke, she had no desire to simply please those around her, after all the last time she had attempted that it lead to being betrayed and abandoned. Being alone, at least for now, was the best thing for her. It gave her time to think about the world and her feelings, finally giving her the strength and courage to stop judging everyone from the actions of a single individual. Yet here, walking away from her was a fine specimen of such need for judging. “Yet your research means that you do the same, even if it is not vocally.” She paused taking in the moons yellowing glow in the world around her before adding, “experience has shown me that solitude is more desirable, company only leads to betrayal.” She grunted softly under her breath, forgetting that she had ever needed a drink, he was assuming that she could not defend herself, she had been doing so for years now. Acquaintance had come and gone, and on several occasions she was forced to fight or flee to protect herself. Secretly her heart desired the company of one she could trust openly, someone who would protect her and care for her, yet such dreams felt foolish in a world that was riddled with the disease of betrayal and abandonment. A solitary tear trickled from her right eye, running smoothly down her nose before dropping off her warm flesh to the ground. The trail slowly began evaporating in the warmth of the evening leaving her feeling cooler than before. The stars twinkled, their lazy eyes winking at her from above, yet they brought her no comfort or nice feelings. The emotions and events that she had attempted to suppress for so long lingered like a bad smell within her mind.

She watched as he walked away from her, considering the pros and cons to continuing such an encounter. Yet he intrigued her, his mannerisms where nothing like she had witnessed before. So she added politely, “However I will apologise for any offence I have caused you, merely because that was not my intention.” Bowing her head low in apology, she held the pose for several seconds before standing tall once more, her mane catching the glint of the moon while swaying calmly in the night breeze. Gazing past him and to the stars on the horizon she wondered if it was now time for her to leave this place to discover a new abode.

((Sorry about the delay on this one, I think you made a slight hiccup so I'm...not sure how to respond very well))

She was wrong again, she was really very good at being very inaccurate. Perhaps if she were to reverse everything she was assuming she would actually be right for once. Instead she merely served to irritate him further and he could only snort dismissively at her. He had never claimed to be devoid of all emotion, he merely kept up a facade of indifference to keep creatures like her away from him. He wasn't infallible, never portrayed himself as such and therefore to deem him as 'closed' and assume that he wanted as much was ridiculous. More to the point, to assume he had attempted to judge her completely from the start was wrong as well, he was a creature who developed a hypothesis and proved or dispproved it over the course of a series of encounters of observations - her attempts to even mimic his behaviour were pathetic.

No wonder she was alone.

Rolling his eyes as she continued to speak, he could do nothing more than arch a brow as she had made reference to his research. Now how had she known that? He hadn't made reference to his studies once, he hadn't said a word in relation to them. On the contrary, he never explained his research or mentioned it to anyone given it wasn't any of their concern. So how was it that this mare knew all about it? He was not one who believed in psychics so something was clearly amiss. For this reason he chose from this point forward to completely ignore her - more to the point, he would alert a certain Kalona to her presence and have her eaten. Consider it a public service.

Flicking his tail against his flank he openly dismissed the mare completely and kept walking. She could shout and leap to conclusions all she wanted. The words she spouted were words he already knew, observations he had made long before she had came to the Kawani lands. To echo his previous phrase she would have to tell him something he didn't know for him to give a rat's a** about her.

Nevertheless as she attempted to apologise he permitted a dark laugh to erupt from his throat and he glanced over his shoulder, eyes cold and unforgiving. "You would be better off as a mute, particularly when the words you spout lack in substance," he pointed out and with that he turned once more and continued to walk away. She had made her assumptions, had laid down her insults and she had been wrong every step of the way - she may have been intrigued by his mannerisms...

But he was bored of her.
