It was dark again.

Finally, really, and not a moment too soon. Roho was well aware of the way Khalla looked at him every time dawn came and how she'd noticed he was not a morning lion. In fact, that was putting it nicely; the large black lion was prone to stumbling and nearly falling flat on his face if he wasn't careful. Dawn had a negative effect on him, in that it lulled him to sleep. Or near sleep; he was so used to simply vanishing and resting during the waking hours that his body had taken the daily walks... harshly, needless to say. He was also sure that his intolerance for light stemmed from his domain, actually, but he didn't wish to even start to open that particular can of worms.

Not while Khalla was around anyhow.

Red hues eyes squinted where the sun set and the large lion let out a long sigh, happy that they'd be able to travel a little while within his domain, rather than out in the open. Daylight made him nervous; there were few places he could hide within, and even fewer place he could actually hide the mortal that had become his travelling companion, within. If an attack should come, he'd be force to tackle it head on, rather than melt away into the darkness and hide, "Why is it you prefer to travel by daylight, anyhow?" while talking to her had become a bit easier over the past few days, and despite the fact she'd given him some information about herself and her old pride, he was missing a lot of the details still, "I've always preferred the dark. It lets me hide. I feel rather.... bare and naked in the sun,"not to mention he was comically clumsy, which was quite the contradiction to his large, almost scary form, "I find the darkness to be more safe... " then he lowered his voice to a mumble, "And I have less of a tendency to stumble in the dark too..."

It hadn't escaped her attention, to be quite honest. Having finally rejuvenated from her taxing ordeal, her senses were back to their normal sharpness and though sorrow still weighed heavily upon her heart and mind, she was back as close to her normal self as she was likely to get. Thus, with all of that back to it's rightful place, she had begun to notice how he was very lethargic come morning - and most of the day, to be honest. She didn't blame it on his being lazy, but it was a peculiar thing, to be sure. She supposed that he might have just been from a pride that lived by night and not by day, after all, she had just come from one such, though she preferred not to think of that.

"Why is it you prefer to travel by night instead of by daylight?" she countered, though not cruely. Her amber eyes swivelled up to meet his brilliant red ones. At first they had been daunting, but after a few days, she had grown used to the way they almost seemed to glow within his dark face. "I don't think it's that uncommon to find lions that travel by day - there are many prides that live by the light instead of by the night." She knew, though, that she was simply avoiding his question.

With a soft shrug, she glanced back ahead of them, her eyes concentrated upon the dark horizon. "It is part of my religion, to live solely in the daylight. Darkness is the time of Enye Giza, though I have come to fear him less since I have left my pride's lands."

"Well..." he paused as if in an attempt to consider her words fully, frowning when he noticed he had no real answer he could give her. At least not one that made actual sense without telling her exactly whom he was, "I feel bare," he repeated, well aware of just how lame that sounded, "Everyone can see me when I'm out by daylight. Anyone can see me coming from a mile away... and there's nowhere to hide. If someone were to attack, there'd be nothing to do but attack back, while in the dark it's easy to avoid a fight," it was a strange statement coming from someone so large; it was obvious that in a fight, Roho had the advantage over most rogues, for not only was his large, but his frame seemed almost built for battle. Queer how... he seemed so very uninterested in fights, to the point Khalla would have probably noticed how willing he was to avoid trouble, going around it, rather than facing it.

It wasn't that he was a coward, and it wasn't that he thought himself weak; it had more to do with his willingness to cause pain onto others and his fear of mortals, really. Then again, he was doing rather well in that later department, as far as he was concerned; while it was true he was hiding his true form from the female beside him, he was talking openly at her, going as far as travelling with her and holding conversations that were rather insightful, if he did say so himself.

Whoo hoo! Yay him!

His thoughts were pierced as she continued to talk, and the God found himself looking down, his head tilting with almost child-like curiosity. While he had heard and been witness of the different religions within many prides (always from afar though), the concept interested him, "Enye Giza?" he tested the name, as if figuring that saying it would cause the being to materialise in front of them, "Whose that?" his ears had flattened back into his white mane though, almost as if somehow fearing the answer he was bound to get.

"Well, that's exactly why I don't like the night," she said, as if it were rather obvious. She shrugged, looking ahead of her, a frown settled on her maw. "I never know who could be hiding from me in the darkness, who could be waiting, who might be there just out of sight.." She trailed off and then looked back up at him, blinking bright eyes up at his form. It wasn't as much of a problem when he was around - he was the largest lion she had ever seen and she had faith in his ability to protect them both. "I'm not quite so big as you, I'm afraid, and I rather stick out in the darkness." It was truth, and thus, there was the answer.

She had noticed his affinity for avoiding trouble, choosing to go around rather than through things that could be potentially dangerous, but that was all fine by her. She was not one that was particularly confrontational and she was just fine with keeping her head on her shoulders and scars off her face. Her pride had been a gentle one, as was her nature.

"Enye Giza is the darkness," she said softly, her brows furrowing as she explained, "but not exactly. He is everything that is evil. He is pain, he is cruelty, he is sin." She flicked her tail, a shudder running down her spine at the mere thought of the being she had been raised to fear. "He is a dark, hateful being." It was hard to explain him, but she did try her best. "It is why we fear the darkness, because it is said that is when he is strongest, that is his time." The thought of Enye Giza reminded her that she would have to face the cursed lands as well as her homelands upon their return, a thought that did not set too well in her stomach.

Roho had to refrain from physically facepalming as the female answered his question. In all honesty, he'd half expected that answer, and yet listening to it, made him wish he could either headwall or facepalm, even if either action would have made him look rather silly indeed, not to mention suspicious. As it was however, all the God was able to do, was to shrink slightly into himself, his ears flattening back till they vanished into his bright mane, "I... I see..." he murmured, trying for all his worth to sound unconcerned. Despite his best attempt however, Roho knew he looked slightly awkward and rattled by the tale.

It wasn't his fault though; a whole pride (even if said pride was long gone, as she'd earlier mentioned) that feared him specifically and seemed to categorise him with evil and all the wrongs in the world was... well, a slightly bombshell to have dropped on him. They feared him; oh the irony, ooooooh the horrible, delicious, evil irony, "What does..." a pause as he cleared his throat slightly, turning his eyes to look at her steadily, morbidly curious, "What does this being look like, exactly?" the words were murmured, and they hadn't left his throat when he realised that he was a glutton for punishment, because he could half anticipate what the damned answer was going to be.

Either that, or he was a masochist. Either or. He wasn't sure which just yet.

Then he narrowed his eyes slightly, as if willing to look and sound serious, "You're safe," he told her as she shuddered, no doubt due to the conversation they were having; he had no place in telling her that what she believed in was 'wrong', nor had he any place to question the religion of any given pride. All he could do was assured her of what little he knew, "He... it won't hurt you. I told you I'd see you safely where you want to go. I won't let it," while he wasn't prone to fights, there had been a time, long back where he's taken quite a bit of pleasure in the pain and fear of mortals, thus so, he knew from experience that push come to shove, he would be able to protect not only himself, but her as well. The irony was that he practicaly embodied that what she most feared... and yet he was willing to protect her from it; from himself.

She could see the way he almost seemed to be burrowing in upon himself, though she chose not to turn and directly stare at him - she figured he wouldn't appreciate that greatly. So, she only studied him from the corner of her eye, trying to discern just why he was acting the way he was. Surely her simple tale of Enye Giza wasn't frightening him so? Well, she supposed it shouldn't surprise her - Enye Giza was a terribly frightening being after all and she had seen the fear of him bring great warriors to their knees.

"Look like?" she said with a deep sigh, glancing at him now with a frown on her face. Was he truly curious, or, she wondered, had he had some encounter that he hadn't been able to explain? Did he think this was the answer to something he had seen before? She found it hard to believe that anyone would be able to face Enye Giza and live. How was she supposed to know that her suspicions were so far from the truth that it was was laughable? "He has many forms," she said, her voice quiet and somber now, "though I suppose many would describe him as a dark, large lion with glowing red eyes. I think it is easier to accept his existence when you can belive he takes a familiar form." Familiar, as in one similar to their own. "He has no form, but he has many, all at once." It was a difficult concept to grasp, and not likely to be understood unless one grew up with the religion.

She couldn't help smiling politely up at him at his reassurance, though she knew, deep down, that if Enye Giza truly wished harm to come to her, there was little that he could do by way of helping. True, he was quite large and he would be a great help in regards to defending her against physical attacks, but Enye Giza was such a tricky, evil monster. "I know you will keep your word," was all she could manage, shifting her shoulders to readjust the pelt across them unconsciously.

Oh, if she'd known the truth; what was really frightening him was the sheer possibility that perhaps he'd inspired something as terrible as this being she spoke of. Of course, he knew that the mythological being the girl talked about was not HIM, per say, however, the image she was painting was too close for comfort. Way too close; almost as if someone had spotted him, and had been frightened enough to think him the embodiment of all things bad. Needless to say, it was disheartening, specially when he'd been... semi sure he'd been making quite a lot of progress.

Roho had to refrain the groan that bubbled up his throat, not to mention the need to bash his head against the nearest tree. The description was more than enough to make him certain that this Enye Giza was no other than he, himself. More or less anyhow; while he knew it wasn't 'him', his appearance had been used to create this being within this pride's mind. Frustration bubbled in the pit of his stomach, and his ears flopped back, as if defeated by the concept; it saddened him to know that he could no longer toy with the idea of showing himself for whom he really was in front of her. There was no way she'd see him and accept him, now. There was simply no way she'd manage to swim past the misconception she had of him (while he knew it wasn't a misconception, for evil needed a face that mortals could recognise, the god wasn't all too happy to learn that it was HIS face that was being used for such a motive).

Letting out a sigh, he turned to look at her, a sad smile playing at his maw even as they padded along, her pridal grounds visible in the distance, "Evil needs a face others can recognise," despite what he was saying, he sounded obviously defeated, almost as if he'd been fighting a physical battle and he'd just lost, "Let's hurry then, I don't like to take chances and toy with fate or karma. These are your lands, and you know best what's dangerous what is not. I'll protect you to the best of my abilities," it'd been... so long since he'd honestly said such words.

Khalla had no way of knowing the thoughts that were crossing through Roho's mind at that moment. She couldn't have guessed, in a hundred years, the feelings that were surging through him. She had never met a god (or at least, she hadn't to her knowledge) and for all she knew, the idea of Enye Giza was entirely founded upon true and honest principles. For all she knew, he existed, and she was on his list of least favorite creatures in the world.

Thus, she was quite confused as to why he was reacting the way he did. Why did he seem so defeated? Perhaps he only just realized that there was no way to protect her against Enye Giza, but suddenly, she found that she wished he hadn't thought of that at all. The sad smile on his maw was disheartening and it made her own features turn down in a frown. She liked him more when he was confident that he could protect her, when he was sure of himself and what he was doing.

"Alright," she said softly, turning her eyes away from him, unable to look up and see that change in his demeanor. It hurt to see it, and thus, she stared off into the distance where she saw the mountains rising instead. To the right of the mountain she could see the dark mass of the swamp, though if they steered more to the left, they would come upon the rocky, hilly range where her pride had made their homes. "It shouldn't be too much farther, we just need to stay away from the forbidden lands." She nodded pointedly towards the dark swampy lands, then turned her eyes away from it for good.

A nod was her answer as he smiled again; sadly, it was still the same discouraged smile that he'd only just briefly offered her moments ago. In his defense though, he had never really honestly paused to think the concequences of his actions. He'd stopped to help a random stronger (something he did not regret, for he was sure anyone with a bit of a soul and common sense would have done likewise), and had gotten... close to her, despite what his mind had screamed at him. He knew what the consequence for getting close to mortals was; Roho could practically summon the mental image of her disgusted, terrified features into his mind, and he was forced to close his eyes against the terrible vision.

So far into his own thoughts was he, that he never noticed the fact they had reached the so called 'hilly range', and thus, he was padding by the side of a small, albeit steep cliff. His eyes strayed unconsciously towards what Khalla had called 'the forbidden lands', and Roho found himself frowning, idly wondering if he'd ever visited that place within his life span; possibly he had, he simply... could not remember though. He'd lived for such a long, long time. Distraction caused him to trip as he walked and he found himself stumbling a pace forward to catch himself. Glaring back at the rock he's tripped on, the God snorted, "Treacherous place, isn't it?" it was the first he'd said since their small conversation; at least the tripping had given him a reason to snap out of his dark thoughts.
PostPosted: Sun Oct 19, 2008 10:56 am

The silence that settled between them troubled Khalla deeply. Something about their conversation had just felt.. off. The look in his eyes, the almost sad gleam where she would have expected fear. She realized then that she didn't know him very well, even if he had somehow appointed himself her protector without so much as voicing such. Was there something in his past that she had touched upon with her story, without realizing it? Her eyes shifted away from him out of politeness, though her jaws were clenched a little as she let the thoughts pass through her mind. Did Roho know more about Enya Giza than he had let on? Was there some dark stain on his past because of the terrible monster? Oh, she had so many questions, but it would have been improper to dig.

"Oh!" came her voice as he tripped, her eyes widening slightly. With him right next to the cliff, such things could be.. deadly. "Yes, it's very treacherous. We always had to be careful, or, well, we'd meet rather unfortunate deaths." She had known more than one lion that had been careless, too excitable or too cocky, and found death waiting. "It's a good teaching tool," she said as she turned her eyes back towards the horizon, where she could see the old pride's heart. "You have to learn patience, with yourself and the lands. Our founders were wise in their choice of land, even if it appears a little.. hard to outsiders." It created balance in those that were unbalanced, and she herself had learned this the hard way - she would have perished as a cub here, with her distracted mind, if not for her teacher.

"I think we should be there soon," she murmured, head tilting to look sidelong at him. As long as she steered the conversation away from Enye Giza, perhaps he would stay a bit more.. well, not cheerful, for she wasn't sure that was a word to describe Roho. Normal, maybe he would act a little more normal.

Oh, he probably knew more about Enya Giza than she would have thought possible. In a way, that creature was created due to fear for his domain; mortals created him to be what they thought was most appropriate, and sadly, very few of them thought of darkness as a comforting, safe place. Alas, he had felt that for now, it was probably best to drop the whole theme and let it rest. No doubt she had question for him; he knew she did, but for now he couldn't face the mental image he'd conjured. Maybe... some day he'd feel guilty enough to confront her over what he knew, but not now.

He shook his paw slightly from where he'd hurt himself, looking down the side of the cliff, "Unfortunate indeed," he murmured, though deep down, he knew that if he'd fallen... well, he could have saved himself. He'd just lost a friend. Shaking the thought out of his mind, he turned his head to watch the female, "Patience is a virtue," it was something he believed in firmly; after all, as a god, he had all the time in the world, "And it's a good place to set the borders at. Keeps danger at bay, even if it seems like an odd location. Your founders were wise," that said he continued to pad into the land, however, despite his words, he still felt slightly upset. His thoughts haunted him. That much was visible to the world around him, "I hope you're right, and that this place can allow me to put my ghosts at rest."

He still had nightmares from long, long ago. Perhaps, just perhaps, this would be the land to cure him. Perhaps this was what he needed; perhaps it was fate that had brought her to him, or him to her. Perhaps he was just a pawn in someone else's game, even despite his immortality... wouldn't that have been an irony?
PostPosted: Sun Oct 19, 2008 12:44 pm

"I'm sure that these lands can heal you," she said softly, staring ahead of them as the pride grew closer and closer with each step. The idea of these lands was built upon healing, of the living and of the dead who had lost their way. Those in the pride healed the living, guides, like herself, traveled to help heal the dead and pass them on into the afterlife. "That's what most of the pride was trained to do, and I'm sure the lands themselves soaked that in." She tilted her head slightly as she thought about it, her amber eyes gleaming in thought. "Maybe the pride made the lands what they are, or maybe it was the lands that made us."

She smiled, albeit weakly, at the thoughts that she said aloud. It was hard to think, even now, that her loving pride, the pride that had taken her in as a cub and raised her to be among their highest and most respected, was gone. She let her eyes fall to the ground, her paws walking along the damp, increasingly rocky earth at a calm pace. "It's been a long time since I've been home, but I'm sure they still retain their ability."
