All That We See or Seem

-------------

Simon is what one would call an average person. He gets average grades, has average looks, and does average work. His parents are an average married couple with average marriage problems and will soon be getting an average divorce. It sickens him that he is limited by his boring life. If only he had the opportunity to do more... However, things change once he falls asleep. When engulfed by his dreams Simon can do anything and does do everything he wants, because in this unconscious world anything is possible; impossible be damned.

Lately, when Simon falls asleep he is greeted by a strange person. A boy named Andre who confuses him and makes him angry and sad, happy and aroused all because he cannot control what Andre does within his dreams. He doesn't understand why...

Then, suddenly, Andre shows up at his school in the guise of a new student. Simon is perplexed and slightly frightened by the fact that he is there and goes to confront the boy. Andre ignores him, just as in his dreams. Simon is sure that Andre recognizes him and becomes flustered when the other refuses to show it.

This boy Andre has disrupted his whole average world.

-------------

Who is this boy Andre? What will Simon do to get his attention and how? And why is the boy from Simon's dreams haunting him in the conscious world?

Simon lay in bed long after he'd supposedly been going to sleep. He couldn't help it, being that his mind was always wandering, always daydreaming. Though the night dreams were what he preferred, because then he'd see Andre. During the day, he was just..average. No one paid particular attention to him, not that he wanted them too, he never branched out and did something to garner attention either. Probably the most exciting thing he'd done was win an essay contest and place second in a spelling bee. Still, those 'accomplishments' didn't do much for him, no one remembered anyway.

He wished he could lead the sort of life he led in his dreams. There he was a hero, or a wizard, or even just a boy with something more to life then endless routine. His dream world didn't have parents that felt he should be self-sufficient, that minded their own business and didn't think twice about divorcing. They loved him, Simon supposed, but they didn't know him, nor did they attempt to get to know him. Simon really only felt comfortable when asleep, when writing, or when drawing..music helped sometimes too, which was probably why his dreams often had background music. He chuckled at the thought as he forced his eyes to close..the sooner he slept, the sooner he'd see Andre..the one person that didn't treat him as just another kid.

Minutes ticked away and an hour passed before Simon was 'aware'. He'd trained himself after so long to be adept at lucid dreaming, and knew that he was inside of his dream. This one appeared to be taking place in a medieval forest, he had no armor, just tunic and leggings and a bright sword. Perhaps Andre would sword fight with him today, or perhaps he'd do something very adventurous, like slay a dragon. Simon looked around and called out, "Andre?"

It always started with darkness and then there was the explosion of ambient, colorful light. Awakening into others dreams was something reminiscent of entering a new and strange dimension, one where a person could never predict what would happen there. Andre awoke into this dream with a gasp, sucking in a deep breath of air while his eyes snapped open only to be blinded by the unnaturally pure light that assaulted them.

He was in a forest and off in the distance, through an opening in the trees, he could see there was a large medieval village materializing in the valley below. The blonde smiled and brushed his hair away from his face. It was longer now than it had been in the last dream and upon sitting up he found that it was tied back and reached nearly the middle of his back.

Standing up, Andre straightened out his tunic and adjusted his cloak, then pulled downward on the strap that held his quiver to his back. Yellow eyes falling to the leaf covered ground, he searched for the bow, he'd found propped against an old, gnarled tree root. Taking it into his hand, he rapped at the cord to make sure it was tight and slung it over his shoulder.

That was when he heard the voice. It seemed that the other had gotten here at nearly the same time tonight. That explained why things were still being formed when he looked outside the edge of the forest. Taking another look out the same opening, he could now see the makings of a whole kingdom; a huge white castle jutting from the side of a darkened hill near the horizon. Impressive, Andre thought as he returned his gaze before him.

It was time to find the other and start this dream.

(Sorry I took so long x-x, that shouldn't happen often.)

Simon waited hopefully for a response, but when none was forthcoming, he sighed. It was always like this, sometimes Andre was ready and waiting, sometimes he took forever. What was the point in making Simon agitated, waiting for the other? He hated Andre in a way, hated the odd emotions the other brought out in him..the hate..the fear..the rage..the kindness..the sweetness..the..love?

Sometimes Andre was kind, the only one in all his life to seem understanding, patient. But then..sometimes he was..cruel, angry, mocking. He didn't understand the constant whirlwind of emotion that the other seemed to both embody and give. "Andre! Andre, where are you?" THe boy called out through the apparently empty lands, looking for his sometimes friend, sometimes nightmare.

To start this dream was really a thought that Andre found funny. Could one really start a dream? Or was it just as paradoxical as the idea of actually ending a dream; or going through a complete set of events and coming to a finalized, resolved end? Maybe or maybe not. All Andre knew was that this dream in particular was special; special because in this dream he was cease to exist in the unconscious world in order to enter world of the awoken.

A wry smile pulled slightly at the corners of his lips as he ran his fingers though his hands through his shining blonde hair. Indeed, this dream would end all of his dreams with this boy, for in this dream they would not be the only ones inside. His eyes quickly looked up as a voice echoed through the trees. It was Simon's voice.

He took off at a run, if he could hear Simon's voice that meant that the others would hear it as well. It was not long before he could see the figure of the boy standing between a few trees. "Simon, run!" he called out as a gust of wind suddenly began to rush through the canopy of the trees. As soon as he got close enough to the other he grabbed onto his wrist and pulled him along.

"There is no time to explain, we must get into the village now," he told the other urgently, hardly looking back at him. Yes, it had started and what a fitting stage for what would happen.

Simon wandered through the forest, meandering amongst the trees and brush, searching for the one person he always took the most joy and pain from. But where was Andre? Normally he presented himself early on in the dreams, which worked well for Simon whose desire to sleep practically stemmed from Andre himself these days.

And then he saw Andre and waved, only to hear the other telling him to..run? Glancing back for any sign of danger, he saw nothing though the wind suddenly became a gust through the trees. "Andre, what's happen-" He was cut off with surprise as the other grabbed his wrist and pulled him.

Simon ran as per Andre's words, but he was still confused. When had Andre ever been upset by something in a dream? Andre was usually the most wonderful and most frightening thing about all of his dreams..could Andre truly be frightened by something else? And if so..then what? The village came into view as they ran and he picked up a bit of speed, "Andre, what's happening?" Simon was able to finish this time.
