i think it's amazing that technology has reached such a peak recently.
it's so...sci fi D:

the ability to now open mini black holes that have a one in a million chance of taking out an entire universe is so horrifying.
but i don't think that would happen.
i have more of a chance at winning the lottery than being sucked into a black hole of doom.

i feel so geeky because now i'm like, 'oh if anything terrible DOES indeed happen, someone awesome will show up out of nowhere and save the day'
too much doctor who.

they've already started the machine.
it will reach full power, or something...by october 21st or so.
that's what i hear anyway.

i wonder what will happen.
a new discovery and insight to our universe and what living means to us?
destruction?
will people start going crazy just before the day it happens and go ballistic, like with y2k?
will new weapons of mass destruction be built?

i don't understand too much of what is going on.
i think it's really interesting and i try to comprehend it a bit better.
i keep hearing about it everywhere.

From the wikipedia link:

BBC Radio 4 commemorated the switch-on of the LHC on 10 September 2008 with "Big Bang Day". Included in this event was a radio episode of the TV series Torchwood, with a plot involving the LHC, entitled Lost Souls. CERN's director of communications, James Gillies, commented, "The CERN of reality bears little resemblance to that of Joseph Lidster's Torchwood script."

So... uh... what happened in the radio Torchwood story then? The LHC opened up the Rift and Casper the Friendly Ghost popped out?

One girl at least has already committed suicide over it. The fact remains that it is even considered a possibility that they could wipe us out by turning that reactor on and they are still doing it is kind of terrifying. I wish that they would have crunched some more numbers and taken a few more precautions before giving it the go ahead. Magnets won't stop a black hole, just plasma. And if they find those mysterious particals are spreading, what would they even be able to do to stop it? Of course if they do make a mini black hole and it just fizzles out after it eats the reactor some theory's on black holes could be confirmed. Or if it winks out of existence a second later, that would be interesting.
In other semi related news: Have you heard they are re-making "The Day The Earth Stood Still". Klatu Burada Nicto!

I hope nothing happens, but I'm going to assume it will and try to enjoy this next month or so.

I agree with Seffy. Why did they turn it on if they thought it might destroy us?! What horrors we visit upon ourselves in the name of science.

[Edit: I suppose that's part of the point, though (horrors in the name of trying it out and finding if we know what we're learning/talking about).

Also, (here's something perhaps not of interest to anyone here), I read (Dr.) Brian May's talk-about-it entry on his website. It's here if you want to search quickly for Sept. 9.]

In all seriousness, Hawking's right. There are particles constantly hitting the atmosphere far harder than the LHC could fire them. If they aren't producing black holes it's unlikely this will do anything.

I think it's EXCELLENT and 280% AWESOME. I'm so curious and would love to see what they find out! even if it isn't the elusive Higgs Boson (or "god-particle" - would show how matter can exist when the subatomic particles that make up atoms are in fact massless etc).

Even the doomsday theorists and other poor mislead / uninformed people who say the world will be converted into a lump of strange matter or swallowed by black holes are great... provides wonderful entertainment reading all those theories razz

Personally I'm really excited!! (if you couldn't tell). I keep counting down the days till the next test or 'apocalypse'... next standing date is the day before my birthday! (21st Oct)

So while we all wait;

http://quegrande.org/countdown/

Cheerio! Happy apocalypse!

EDIT: of course with only a highschool education I can't say that there definitely won't be any... er, bad .. stuff happening...

But when you think about it, they're just hitting fast (almost the speed of light) protons at each other, and recording the trajectory, spin, energy released, speed and other shiz of the subatomic particles that are released when they hit and are split apart. From what I've learned so far in physics and from what's on youtube, it doesn't really sound like it's going to kill everyone. And hey, if it really was that dangerous, do you really think they'd allow it to go ahead?!?!?!? you have way more chance of dying from a lead salmon falling on your head, in my uneducated opinion. Very unlikely, but of course you can't REALLY rule the possibility out, huh. Lead Salmon. That's all I have to say. No, make that titanium.

i'm so glad people agree with me on that bit.
i feel like i was just being totally weird and dorky when i mentioned it reminded me of some crazy doctor who episode.

i'll have to watch it then.

hope it's in my local movie place : D

freaj~
it is amazing seeing so many things going on about it.
i agree.
i want to see what comes out of this.

I agree..it's just so sci-fi!

And there was that Torchwood Audio play about it..and then K-9 in the Sarah Jane Adventures looking after the black hole..

I remember being greeted one morning with 'Hello! This could be the last day on earth!' or something to that extent.
