About four years ago I went to this garden center. There was this little sad, half near dead plant. It was in a tiny container which was about the size of my thumb. The price tag on it was $6.99. I felt so incredibly bad for it that I picked it up and was going to purchase it and nurse it back to health.

The cashier looked at me, and look at the plant and said she couldn't charge me for a dead plant and let me have it for free.

Well, I watered it, spoke to it and it died. Sorta. I kept it for a while after thinking it was dead and was about to throw it away when! There was growth! So, I kept at it, and it came back to life. Until about a year ago, it would grow three shoots with three leaves. Then a new shoot would grow and the other would die. Now, it grows like a weed and the leaves are getting more elaborate. I took it back to the garden centre, and they had no idea what it was. She said, that because of the price tag on such a small pot, it would be a unique species.

So, now that you've read the entire bibliography on my little plant, here are pictures. It really wants to know what it is so that it may finally choose a name.

What the leaves looked like before:

What they look like now. They're much thicker and stockier then the previous ones.

This is the underside of the new leafs. The spore leaves started growing at the beginning of the summer.

Solved! I also posted the information at the botanical forums of UBC and they beat you to the punch. Apparently it is a Japanese holly fern. And, had I actually spent the $6.99 for the half dead plant, it still would of been a good deal. eek

So, all bask in the glory that is my Japanese holly fern! (Who is already busy at work picking out his new name.)

xd

The pot that it was originally in was about the size of my thumb in the bottom picture. I got it for free, but the price on it was $6.99. Apparently that is still inexpensive for the holly.

Here's a picture of it coming back to life - it's on the far right with in the original pot that has the orange price tag on.

yay fuzzy caterpillars!

I'm glad your plant lived. There's nothing like nursing a plant back to health.

Muahahhahaa. Everyone should have a fuzzy caterpillar. heart That or woodlice. OMG things that curl up when you poke them are for giggles!

I'm really happy about my plant too. Having it brought back to life brought a lot of confidence. Very few of my (indoor) plants have died. He's also very happy now that he knows about his past (it quite disturbed him) and now with that information he can go about choosing a proper name. biggrin

It's always great when mistreated little plants survive. Yay for the happy little Japanese Holly Fern. Does he have a proper name yet?

He hasn't chosen one yet. You'd think after all these years he'd jump at the chance, but nope, he's taking his time now. Boys, I swear. rolleyes
