Chiaki had grown into a beautiful and graceful adult and now had set out on her own to find where she belonged in the world. She was thankful to Alima and her ragtag clan for taking her in and raising her, teaching her manners and how to act around others. They were like family and she cared for them.

It was late in the day and the sun was beginning to set. Chiaki knew she shouldn't have slept in, but she had been so comfortable that she overslept the time she had decided to get up and start travelling again. The female had been flying along the treetops for a while and decided that it would be best to head lower as the sky began to darken. Not only that, she was needing to rest her wings as she had been flying for many hours now.

She spotted a large oak tree and figured that that would be as good a place as any to rest for a while. Tucking her wings close to her body, she angled herself down and slipped easily through the branches. Chiaki landed on one of the branches closest to the ground and gave her monochrome wings a stretch. She gave a little sigh at the pleasing feel of her muscles relaxing. "Ah, what a day," she crooned to nothing or no one in particular.

Faeron awoke to the last wispy rays of the sunset that filtered their way down through the dense roots at the entrance to his earthen cave. The air was cool and crisp about him, as it always was in his favorite little hideaway. The stone walls around him seemed to radiate a certain chill, being unwelcome to others, but a homely feeling to himself. A small bed of dried leaves covered with the soft furs of large prey cusioned his body from the hard floor. From somewhere deeper in the cavern, the faint sound of dripping water met his ears, while the soft whispering of a small crystal-clear spring off to the side of the entrance chamber calmed his nerves.

He opened his eyes.

Eyes as red as the blood of prey that he sometimes preferred to drink, red as the rose that creeped upon the bark of trees. Yet they were different from normal eyes... they were distant, empty, like a dark night in a lonely desert. For Faeron was blind, and his world did not revolve around sight. Instead, he used his other "heightened" senses to see the world around him.

It had not been five minutes of quiet dusk before he smelled a strange scent, a new scent. It was familiar, but different. Another Kylan? Why would another kylan other than those in his pack dare cross his boundary lines? And why were they so close? These thoughts darkened his mood as he rose from his palette and saunted over to the opening in his cave, using his excellent hearing, ground vibration sensing, and memorization to avoid random stalagmites. As he neared the opening nestled within the roots of the ancient oak, the scent became much stronger.

"An intruder..." his deep voice growled, and his wings bristled at his sides. "Who dares think they can intrude upon my territory?" He quietly leapt through the small hole into the forest outside, determined on finding out who this intruder was... and how to deal with them.

Trust was not his forte.

Chiaki shook herself a little. Now that she had stopped to rest she could really feel her full day's flight in her shoulders. The cooling air felt nice and took a bit of the edge off. The kylan who raised her had all been of the grounded sort so she had to learn by trail and error. Sometimes long distances were still a bit of a challenge but she didn't let than slow her down any. Her wings were folded loosely at her sides while she cleaned her feathers and fur.

From her place in the tree, it was hard for the female to pick up that she was trespassing but she was soon informed. Chiaki's muscles jumped at the deep voiced growl, a tiny gasp escaping her throat. Her bright blue eyes scanned around in the growing dusk for whom the voice belonged to. It sounded definitely masculine and quite displeased that she was there. She swallowed a little and rose. She hopped off of the branch and descended to the ground in more of a controlled jump than a graceful glide. The female landed with a soft thump as her feet met the ground.

Blue eyes half closed in a wince as she felt her shoulders protesting even that simple action. Chiaki kept out of reach of the male, uncertain of how he'd react to her on his level. She could see he had wings as well, only different. "I apologize for trespassing here, sir. I wasn't aware that this place belonged to someone. I was just stopping to rest. I've been rambling for sometime of this day." She rather hoped he wouldn't be the sort to attack first and ask questions later. The female was aching too much to remain airborne for long, but she could run. Granted, how effective this would be in unfamiliar territory, she wasn't sure. Her wince could almost be heard in her voice as she spoke, her wing muscles taking their precious time to relax again.

"Forgive me." Chiaki dipped her head in apology, but kept her eyes on the dark bat winged male.

Faeron tensed as he heard the sound of feet hitting the ground, though he noticed from the vibrations in the ground that the kylan was about as large as he was. Alright, so not as large a threat as he had thought... then his head rose in surprise as a feminine voice met his sensitive ears. A female? What would another female be doing in his territory? Then he heard the faint rustle of feathers, and understood.

Ah...

"Rambling..." he mused, emerging farther from the tangle of roots that hid his cave. "Of course. Why would you be doing anything else?" His voice was low, almost mocking... almost seductive, in a way. He could not see this female, but with his many obversations, he knew that she was no match for him. He may be blind, but his muscles were strong from years of practiced and real battle. The best warrior was the one who could fight without relying on sight.

"Forgive you? I'll have to think about that, now won't I?" he said quietly, giving a small mocking chuckle. "But I suppose that I'll save a battle for another day. Now, tell me: you're a winged, yes? Why did you leave the company of your own? Wandering in unfamiliar territory can be... dangerous, you know." He gave a dark little smile, focusing his red eyes right on her, though he could not see one single hair of her body.

Chiaki sat down and curled her extremely pale creamy white tail around her feet almost protectively, a habit of hers when she was nervous. She could hear the slightly mocking tone in his voice, with its edge of seduction. The pale female rolled her shoulders as her flight muscles began to ease their tenseness, with a soft sigh.

Blue eyes were locked onto his red ones, noting the distance in them. Chiaki wasn't one to back down easily, so she held her place under his mocking and his questions. She seemed unruffled by them. The tip of her tail twitched as she listened and observed the dark male, gathering information and forming ideas and conclusions about him and her situation.

She simply angled her head to one side when he said that he'd think about forving her. Chiaki blinked at his question and looked down at her black and cream white wings, before returning her gaze to him. "Yes, I am. My clan is not my own. They raised me but didn't birth me. I was found and taken in as a cub by a clan of unrelated grounded Kylan. I wanted to go out and find my own place in the world. My uncle and my mother, the matriarch, encouraged me to do so. I am aware that wandering in unfamiliar territory can be dangerous. That's why I've mostly been taking wing. When I came to rest in your tree here I wasn't aware that it belonged to anyone. I was tending to my shoulders. Very long flights make my shoulders ache." Her eyes searched his and her ears pricked forward when it sank in.

He's blind...

Faeron listened quietly and intently to her explanation, his eyes never leaving her face, though he could not see it. Her voice was sweet and calming, like the mid-summer's wind on a cool, clear night. Faeron considered it to be a hindrance, and he ignored the loveliness of it. He was not known for simple mercy and outright feelings, and he would not start now.

A small grin came to his face when he felt the change in her mood, a sudden realization that caused the faintest of tension in her body. "Ah... so you've found me out, have you? Well, I shall let you know right now that this is no hindrance to me. In fact, I could most likely tear the flesh from my enemy's bones more efficiently now than if I possessed sight." He exaggerated a wide grin, revealing the fangs that were slightly more elongated than a normal kylan's.

He quickly snapped his jaw shut, and his face became serious yet again. "Look... if you are searching for a place where you belong, then this is no place. Even my own clan leaves periodically because of my... habits. You would do best to leave. For the good of both of us," he murmured, his voice fading at the end. This time, there was no anger or slyness in it. Only a tiredness that spoke of a hard and painful life that he wished to keep hidden in his gloomy heart.

"I can only imagine," Chiaki softly replied to him when he picked up her murmur about his sight, or lack there of. "I could see how it would sharpen your other senses extraordinarily." She fluffed her fur up slightly and held her head up steady at his wide, fang baring grin. She wasn't going to show fear to the dark male, even though she was a little caught off guard at how long his fangs were when compared to those of her family's and the other few Kylan that she had run across. She was certain he couldn't see her, but in all likeliness he could most likely feel her, in a sense. Chiaki often picked up on things quickly and had always been one to think on her feet.

She flicked her ears slightly at his words, her curiousity piqued, a thing her mother warned about coming around to get her one day. Well, that day hadn't come yet, but Alima's words always dwelt in the back of her mind. Chiaki blinked her vivid blues and resisted the urge to tilt her head at him. "Habits?" The question escaped her before she could hold herself back. She winced and shook her head, wiping a forepaw over her face in her embarrassment. "No. I shouldn't have asked. Forget that." She huffed a sigh then nodded to him. "I may not know what your habits are, even if they on occasion require your clan to give you your space, but I understand what you're saying. I won't linger here if I am not welcome. But...I am exhausted from today. Could I not just rest for a few hours in your oak? I can't fly yet, not without considerable pain, and I'm too tired to walk far. If you'll allow me, could I simply rest in the braches of your oak? I would be out of your way and you'll hardly know I am there. Please? If not, I will go as far as my feet can take me, but I don't know the expanse of your territory and may not make its bounderies."

She could hear the weariness in his voice and wondered what he could have experienced for him to sound as tired as he did, even if his form was strong and capable, life could sometimes lend a heaviness to one's heart. This time Chiaki managed to hold her tongue, but a big part of her wanted to find out why this dark male sounded so weary.

This strange female seemed so calm in the face of his warnings, and it seemed to relax his nerves just a bit. Her voice was so different, different from even the calm Aiya's voice, who could so often extinguish his anger with a few soft words. This female seemed to understand, or have a small capability for understanding, why he was so weary of his life. It sparked his interest, made his guard a bit lower, to want to know how such a soft spirit could also be so strong.

Faeron bristled at her question, his paws digging into the ground as he contemplated the options. Let her stay, and have her infect his sour mood with her light spirit, let her stay and have her find out what a monster he could be... or perhaps there was more than he was seeing here. Maybe, just maybe, she was the one who could understand, who wouldn't be afraid.

He moved his gaze away from her after what seemed an eternity, and lifted his head towards the sky. He inhaled deeply his sides expanding greatly, and he examined the different scents of the wind. His face clouded with a small frown as he discovered the scent of impending rain.

"A storm is coming," he stated flatly, turning back towards the entrance of his cave. "Even the thick boughs of this old tree can not keep out the torrents of rain." He took a deep breath, sighed heavily, then turned back towards her, his deep red eyes focusing perfectly on her blue ones. "Listen, and listen closely, for I will not repeat this offer. I will allow you to stay one night, so that you can recuperate and be well on your way by morning. But if you want to truly rest, then you must be out of the storm."

He ambled over towards the hidden opening of stone, and swept his front paw across to clear the snake-like roots. Many years of memorization allowed him to perfectly locate every single thing in and around his cave. "I have never allowed anyone in here, not even in the most terrible of storms. I will warn you now; it is dark, and there are pathways that will lead you deep underground and empty you into dangerous dead-ends. You are not a creature of the dark, as I am. Therefore, you must stay close to me, and only do what I say you can do. Understand?" He beckoned for her to enter, the dark opening gaping like an open mouth.

Chiaki waited patiently while the male mulled over her question, debated his options, and came to a decision. She watched his face, searching for what he was thinking. She blinked and followed his gaze skyward. The sky was dotted with small dark clouds, none seemed particularly ominous. She sniffed the air and only picked up the scents of night. The female was impressed that he could pick up the storm.

She shifted her vivid blue eyes to him when he warned her to listen closely. Her ears perked a bit and she sat up straighter, listing intently to what he had to say. "Alright. I am listening." When he finished, a small warm, soft smile slowly spread across her face at his words. She was very grateful that he was letting her stay the night, particularly in a place out of the approaching storm, for the idea of spending a night among the old oak's sturdy brances wracked by howling winding and driving rain was a vastly unappealing one.

Chiaki rose from her spot and moved to stand near him as he swept his front paw across the snaking roots to reveal the hidden stone entrance. She nodded ernestly at his words. "Yes, I understand completely. I will stay close to your side and go only where you lead me. And when we come to the place where you're letting me rest, that is where I shall stay until morning." With that she slipped past him into the gaping mouth of the male's hidden caverns, her fur brushing ever-so-lightly against his as she past.

The female blinked in the darkness of the cave. She would definitely not want to get lost in this place. Chiaki folded her wings close to her body and looked back over her shoulder to the entrance, waiting for the male to enter and show her the way to where she would be sleeping.

"I'm glad you understand," Faeron mumbled, though his voice was anything from thankful. He followed the sound of her footsteps, noting where she traveled, and felt the soft vibrations travel through the ground. However, being so intent on where she was, he tensed greatly as the feel of her fur brushing his. The contact sent a strange shiver through him, and he growled lightly as he expelled it from his body. No good would come from losing his firm resolve.

He followed her into the cave, letting the snake-like roots fall across the entrance once again. He heard her light steps echo off the stone walls, amid the soft dripping sounds of the spring waters. They were so soft.... how did she manage to make them so light? It fascinated him in a way, a way that clouded his anger and made him feel... so strange. He shook his head quickly, not allowing the thoughts to distract him.

"Over here..." he murmured, walking over to his bed of leaves and furs. "You may stay here, if you wish. This cave can get quite chilly. You can recuperate quickly in this spot, I am sure." He moved away from the bed, towards a dark corner of the cavern.

He sighed deeply, letting his wings droop tiredly to the ground. "I suppose I should share my name with you, so as I am not a complete monster. It is... Faeron." He turned towards her, his voice becoming soft. He let his angry facade drop in that instant, for he no longer felt like terrifying this female. There was a certain point where being a monster was too much for him to bear, and that was part of why his heart was so heavy.

Chiaki blinked and shook her head slightly when the darkness filled in around her when the snakelike vines fell across the entrance again. She followed along side the male very closely, not wanting to get lost in this dark and unfamiliar place. She wasn't worried though. If she stuck close to the dark winged male, she had faith in him that he wouldn't lead her astray.

She padded to his bed of leaves and furs, immediately picking up his scent heavily though the bedding. This was where he stayed and slept. The female sat down and gave her wings a bit of a stretch with a thankful sigh. It was a comfortable bed and she would indeed get a good nights rest here out of the storm.

Chiaki eased herself to lie on her belly, folded her front paws over each other at the wrist, and looked to where the male's voice was coming from in the darkness. Her eyes had just about adjusted as best they could manage. She could see very vague shapes of the stalagtites and of him, the bat winged male. Chiaki smiled softly upon learning his name. "Thank you for allowing me to stay, Faeron. It's very nice to make your aquiantence. My name is Chiaki."

Faeron gave a small "hmph" as she revealed her name, not sure whether he was pleased or not at meeting her. He paced over to the other side of the small entrance cavern, sensing every little nook and cranny along the way. The vibrations that reverberated from his footsteps to the cavern walls then back again allowed him to "see" everything around him and create a mental map. But there was one thing that he could not see... at least the fine details.

What did she look like? Though he knew the normal kylan from experience and observation with his other senses, he had no knowledge of beauty or color. Everything was... just a shape, or dull shadow to him. There was no color to his dreams, no certain form... just a gray world full of texture and form.

He arched his neck gracefully downward, dipping his snout into the cool water of the small spring. He drank generously, enjoying the profound purity of the water. Then he straightened back up and sauntered over to where Chiaki lay, his eyes' gaze straight ahead of him. He sank down to the ground next to her, folding his wings tightly against his sides. He gave a great sigh, his sides heaving, then turned towards her, his eyes almost focusing perfectly, though he saw nothing.

"Chiaki... do you know of the bat kylandrei? Of our habits? Do you know why some fear me, why I prefer solitude? Why my life seems to be concealed in a veil of shadow that I can not escape?" His voice was deep and grave, though it held no anger. It was cautious, as if he was afraid of scaring her off.
PostPosted: Tue Sep 16, 2008 10:04 pm

Chiaki curled her tail around herself and half rolled onto her side. This was the most comfortable place she had the chance of laying on in quite a number of days and it soothed her aching muscles greater than what a night in the branches would have, she suspected. Her blue eyes trailed the shadow of his figure as Faeron moved to a nearby pool of water, if her ears and sense of smell didn't betray her that is. She didn't dare lay her head down. Not for fear of the male, but for not wanting to seem rude if she simply nodded off if he wished to speak with her.

She didn't move when he sauntered over to where she lay, Chiaki simply looked at him through the darkness, curious as to what he was doing. That was answered soon enough. She tipped her head back slightly as she thought over his words. Finally she shook her head. "Not really. I'm sad to say I don't know much about the bat kylandrei, or aquatic, or cherub, or even bird kylan, like myself. I know everything anyone could possibly want to know on ground kylandrei, but otherwise I'm lacking. But, that's part of why I left too. I want to learn; I want to experience them."

Chiaki chuckled softly with a sigh and gave another shake of her head. "I don't know why some fear you, or why you prefer to be alone, or even what habits your kinds has. Perhaps you could enlighten me? I promise not to be afraid. I'll simply listen and take in what you have to say." She frowned very slightly at the graveness in his voice and at his last question. "It doesn't have to be," she said in a near whisper. "No one should have to live alone."

Faeron turned his head away towards the sound of dripping water, many troubled thoughts running through his mind. He also knew much about ground kylandrei, but none about his own kind. Perhaps that was why his strange habits seemed so... gruesome to him. He was used to the normal kylans, ones who rarely ate meat and preferred the happy sunshine. If he lived with others of his kind, he might have felt a little better.

"Perhaps this wasn't the best place to come to learn of others..." he lamented, half to himself and half to her. He laid his head down on his front paws, closing his red eyes.

"If you say you wish to learn, then I suppose I can teach you. But there is only so much that words can relate," he said quietly, giving a great sigh. Her last words made his ears p***k just the slightest, his eyes widen, though they were still shut. He turned his head slightly toward where he knew she was laying, a strange feeling welling up from deep inside of him. This time, he did not push it away.

"Alone... " he let the word echo in his head, and he sifted out the true meaning of it. "I am alone, always have been, and always will be. That is just how my kind lives. Alone, and with the fear of others always wrapping its hold tighter about our hearts." His deep, soft voice faded into the darkness from which it was procured. "But if you say different... then I will believe you."
