Who: Kinsey Finch and Thanatos "Xan" Wolverick
Where: Kinsey's current place of employment, the Timeless Diner
When: Some ungodly hour, Kinsey's working, after all

Ah, crud.

Kinsey scowled to herself as she pocketed the meager tip and began to wipe the table down. What was it with cheapskates this evening? It wasn't like she'd been in a bad mood, or something. She hadn't spilled any coffee, hadn't forgotten any orders. While it had been pretty busy a little earlier (if you could call nine, ten PM earlier), things had slowed down considerably as they entered the wee hours of the morning. The diner would be closing in an hour, and Kinsey hadn't made anywhere near her normal amount in tips.

"Bloody teenagers."

What where they even doing up this late, anyways? Up to no good, that was for sure. Eating food, paying in coins. Making a mess. What was with kids and shooting straw wrappers all over the place? The young woman scowled, scooping up the paper waste and pushing them into her pocket. She finished up just in time to see someone walk in.

"Table over here, sir!"

Late night, well as close to late night as it would get for the time being. Hardly too early, however, for the young man to be napping. That and it was such a lovely night out, why not take a quick stroll through town, grab a bite to eat then head back. Who knew what would become of his housemates if he left them alone for too long. He chuckled mirthfully at that, they were some rascals that much was for sure but he loved those idiots regardless.

Sauntering down the walkway, Xan's stomach began to protest his need for daydreaming and brought his attentions to the aforementioned issues. "Alright, I'll grab a bite to eat..." he chuckled to his stomach making a turn around the corner. Coming upon the Timeless Diner, he tilted his head curiously to the side. With a shrug he stepped up to the diner, entering with a curious peek around.

Didn't look to crowded which was given considering the hour. Still there were a few people sprinkled about. The sound of a young woman calling him to a table seemed to push Xan further into the establishment as he hurried to take his seat. "Water please." He drawled softly tipping his hat before taking it off completely to sit on the table next to him. Looking around he gave a soft smile having not noticed such a place before. It was... cute. Maybe he'd bring the guys over some time if tonight proved fruitful.

Kinsey paused as the stranger took his seat, tipping his hat and...that drawl. She blinked once, as though mesmerized, and shook her head. "Water. Of course. I'll be right back, sir," she replied, flashing him a charming smile as she dropped off a menu and made back to the kitchen. Well, that was odd. It wasn't often she saw new faces at this hour. The only people that stopped by so late had just gotten off work themselves.

She returned only a moment later, setting down a glass of water and a straw. "Are you ready to order, sir? Or would you like a few more minutes?" she asked, brushing dark purple bangs out of her face. The rubies under her left eye glimmered in the low light and she rested a hand against her hip. "Y'know, I don't fancy I've seen you around here before. Are you new to town?" she asked. It really wasn't often she got newcomers. "If you are, you found the right place, promise."

Xan blinked a moment watching the woman head for the kitchen. Shaking his head he looked over the menu finding nothing in particular he was looking for. When she returned he took a decent drink of his water, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand as he set the glass down.

"Hm? Well I'd like a salad nothing special, ranch dressin', your soup of the day if ya got one. Otherwise cheese and broccoli soup will do and if possible some peach tea to wash it all down with if'n ya don't mind." He closed the menu setting it aside as he looked up with a soft smile. At Kinsey's inquiries he arched a brow with a thoughtful expression. "Actually, not very new been hangin' round these parts for a few months now. I don't live to far from here actually, some friends of mine are providing shelter while I'm in town. Though I live further out in the boonies, ranch and all." He chuckled lightly taking a decent drink of his water before asking. "So tell me a bit about this place. What charms does a quaint diner like this have? And why would they have such a charming gal working at such unholy hours?"

Kinsey whipped out her trusty notepad and purple pen, scribbling down the stranger's order as fast as he could say it. Drawl it. Heh. "I see," she replied easily, her grin still firmly in place. "Well, like I said, you've found the right place." She flipped her notebook shut and tucked it into her apron pocket, her pen behind her ear. "Charms? You mean, other than me?" Kinsey asked, winking. She couldn't help but chuckle a little as she shook her head; it was hard to think of herself as charming! More often then not, people would comment on the rubies under her eye or her general lack of...chest. You know, ask her how old she was, or why she bound. (Twenty-something and I don't, thank you very much.) "Well, I'd say the food is probably the best around," she boasted, "and I'd say all our regulars are right good people." She paused, looking confused for a brief moment.

"...well. Because no one else would, I guess." Kinsey flashed the stranger a quirky grin. "I wasn't going to be picky. Take what I can get. Besides, I've met some very interesting people working this shift!" she chirped. "The name's Kinsey, by the way. Kinsey Finch. And yourself?"

Despite seeing some rather strange things lately, Xan wasn't the type to pry. If folks felt like sharin' they'd do so on their own terms. Therefore, talk about the rubies under Kinsey's eyes was simply not going to be approached on his part, though he was rather curious. Introducing herself he smiled charmingly with a lopsided grin and a tilt to his silvery head. "Ah, where are my manners? Thanatos Wolverick, ma'am but please call me Xan everyone does."

"So you've been workin' this shift for a while it seems. I'll have to change my late night walks and come by more often. If anything to keep ya company." He chuckled lightly looking up with sparkling mint eyes before tapping her notepad. "But I am a bit famished darlin' mind gettin' that order to the chef for me? We can chat plenty after that." Again the low chuckle escaped him as he watched her with that lazy smile.

"Ah, of course! Sorry to keep you waiting, sir. Er, Xan." Kinsey was far beyond getting flustered at this point. She'd dealt with much pushier people, much whinier kids and much more obnoxious teenagers. The first and the last were liable to find a pot of coffee in their laps if they pushed the right buttons, but fortunately (if only for the sake of keeping her job), Kinsey had avoiding scalding any thighs lately. But that thought aside, the youth tucked her notepad into her apron and strolled into the kitchen.

A few moments later, Kinsey waltzed back through the swinging doors, pausing to set down a hamburger dinner for a rogue journalist (or, at least, that was Kinsey's best guess) before bringing Xan his peach tea and his salad, ranch dressing on the side. "'nything else I can get you, darlin'?" she asked, the pet name slipping out before she could catch it. s**t, she really was becoming a stereotypical late-night waitress, wasn't she? Well, better to pretend like it didn't happen at all. Maybe she ought to bat her eyelashes, or something, be distracted like those other girls when they messed up.

Or maybe a dazzling smile would suffice. It was going to have to.

Xan couldn't help the slow smile that spread across his features at the slip but he didn't mind it too much and preferred not to point it out. A small little detail really and with that dazzling smile on her face he didn't have the heart to even poke a little fun. Taking his tea he blew into the mug softly before taking a few tentative sips. His smile spread wider at the perfect blend as he began to drink in earnest though carefully behind the heat. Setting the mug down he began eating his salad dipping the crunchy lettuce in the ranch dressing.

When he was satisfied with his fill of the salad he pushed it aside crossing his arms over his chest and leaning back casually. "The salad was nice, my hats off to the chef. And the tea is damn close to how I make it at home. You're missin' one important ingredient though." He winked letting his deep laugh fill the air around him. "So, Kinsey, aside from working late nights what else do you do fun?"

Well, at least Xan enjoyed the food. That was the most important thing. Kinsey made a point to stick around while Xan ate, just in case the man needed something. She kept herself busy, though, wiping down tables and chairs, restocking the little jelly containers and taking care of the only other customer left at the hour. She had wandered back over to Xan's table just in time to listen to the compliments. The youth smiled. Cook did always like compliments.

"Missing something?" she asked, raising her eyebrows. Now that wasn't something she heard everyday. About to question further, the cowboy (was he actually a cowboy, or did he just have the drawl and the hat?) effectively distracted the waitress. "For fun?" She chuckled and shook her head. "I sleep a lot. Until noon or somethin'. Then I usually drag myself home at least three times a week and once a weekend for lunch. My mom makes really good food, and it's nice to see the family." She shrugged. "But I guess that doesn't make me too interesting, huh? Oh!" A wild grin. "I like to go fishing. Most people think it's right boring, but I try to go at least once a week. Really good for relaxing."

Ah that sounded about right, sleeping until noon that is. He only did that on days he had some free time to himself which hadn't been too often lately. Even so he liked being active it got the day moving and kept him well enough busy that he could easily slip into a coma at the end of the day. Leaning his cheek on the back of his hand he listened to Kinsey watching her closely but mindful no to be too rude.

It was the little mannerisms and quirks that interested him in people. How their eyes lit up, a sudden tick if irritated or minor habits. He didn't know where he picked that up but it had suddenly become a deep part of him, even as his mind seemed to wander he had heard everything and was even able to respond to some degree. "Fishing is an interesting past time, I've gone on a few occasions but loathe to admit it's just not my speed. I find many other options far more relaxing." He looked off as if to hide something but then locked his gaze on the waitress. "Then again I'm bias. When a catfish suddenly assumes my nose is bait I think that about sums up my skill of fishing." He chuckled hiding a low blush of embarrassment though it wasn't much to be ashamed of, just a bit unsettling at best.

Kinsey chuckled, tucking her hands into her pockets. "I'm afraid most people find fishing rather boring. I won't lie, even I get sick of it sometimes. But that's why I like it. There's just a lot of time to think and stuff. And, I like the sound of the ocean," she added, catching herself mid-ramble and letting it go. Xan probably didn't really care how much she liked the beach. Though, his explanation why he didn't like fishing was a pretty unique one!

"A catfish caught you by the nose?" she asked, bringing her hand to her mouth to try to keep from laughing. "I can't say I've ever heard that before. Won't you tell me the story?" she crooned, half-inclined to sit next to the man. It was too bad she was still on shirt- Oh! "Hold that thought!" The girl disappeared in a flurry, only to reappear a few moments later with the rest of her customer's dinner. "Here you are," she said, setting the soup down gently. "Anything else?" No darling this time!
