What do you prefer for your tack needs? Do you pay the extra money for the durability, traditional, suppleness, and class of leather? Or do you prefer the more affordable, tough, brightly colored nylon tack?

i personally like leather, even though it can be difficult to upkeep. I've ridden in one synthetic (which, i know, i should ride in more before i make a well based opinion, but yea) saddle, a wintec all purpose, i think it was all purpose anyway. Anywaysss.... i did not like it at ALL. it was very uncomfortable to me, was slippery, to deep, and when i tried to shorten my stirrups, the strap came off of the stirrup bar! it was very strange. of course, it may have just been that saddle, as it was donated to the program i volunteer with, so i am still keeping an open mind regarding synthetic saddles. But so far, my experience with them hasn't really been pleasant.... smile

My trail saddle at camp is a WinTec and I love it. We're trying to completely switch over to synthetic since we're so rough on them but keep some nicer leather one's for lessons and shows. The lighter weight is nice too for packing and for short people like me who end up tacking up the 16+hh horses. I HATE using synthetic english saddles. I have yet to ride in one that bent to fit the horse and I, leaving me off balance and just uncomfortable. It doesn't help that its difficult to punch holes in (I have uneven legs and usually need child's length stirrups, especially in dressage.)

I live in FL so the synthetic tack is easier for me to clean. I don't like musty, green leather tack but all my show tack is leather.

I tend to use synthetic headstalls and leather reigns. I have to adjust bits and headstall size often and it's much less of a hassle on the nylon or biothane stuff. I love the feel of leather in my hands - have had several instances where nylon reigns actually gave me rope burn while riding, so I don't like them much.

Leather saddles 99% of the time for me. I just prefer leather saddles over synthetic. I've ridden in quite a few synthetics, and hated them. Either they were slippery, off balance, or made so they made me sit off balance/ in an incorrect position.
Now, say if I was just going to ride down the road on a hot day, or if I planned on getting dirty while in the saddle (raining, ridding through muddy conditions, ridding through a river/pond/lake) then sure, synthetic/nylon stuff is okay.

I'll go both ways. I prefer leather if I have the option. No particular reason other than I like it better. I like the feel of it, the smell of it, the look of it. But I have a synthetic dressage saddle and I love it. It's a wintec pro and it's not the slippery type of synthetic, but the sticky kind. So it's like always wearing full seats. Loverly.

I have a synthetic at the moment, but I would much rather have a leather saddle ><

I have a black synthetic dressage saddle, and it's not too bad. It's really light, easy to keep clean and it isn't the slippery kind. Not to mention it looks a fair bit like leather unless you're inspecting it really closely. However, if I didn't live in such a dusty area and had the cash to spare, I would definitely have a leather saddle.
But I do have a leather bridle (with wierd cotton-ropeish reins) which I love. 3nodding

I prefer leather tack over synthetic. I find synthetic saddles to be rather uncomfortable and stiff to ride in.

I usually prefer leather saddles, especially since the one that I have is really light. It just feels like a heavy nylon one. As for bridles, I prefer nylon. Especially since I do a lot of barrels and flags, barrel reins help me. The ones that I have are braided orange nylon with four knots in them. They don't match Dakota's blue headstall, but they look better than the pink that was the other choice when I got them.
