"It were not best that we should all think alike; it is difference of opinion that makes horse races."
- Mark Twain

Meru had found it to be the perfect day for one of her 'adventures.' The sun was shining, the land was buzzing with energy---and so was the mare, of coarse. "It's just so perfect!" she cheered to no one other than herself, "Such a perfect day, just for me!" With an awkward looking twirl she took off running across the lands; no particular destination in mind.

The bow at her rear bounced up and down and she giggled and pranced her way towards the nearest landmark---which appeared to be the nearing river. "Water!" she squeeked with glee. Her favorite element. Perhaps she'd go swimming...today was nice enough after all. But did she really want to get her cute outfit wet? And her hair---

Meru came to a halt right infront of the water and impulsively took a drink from it instead. Anyone watching would have assumed she was going to dive head first into the body of water, only to have had her stop suddenly and take a passive gulp from the river. She was an interesting one indeed. "Maaaaaaaaaaaaybe...I'll find something else to do" she spoke to herself outloud again. Jumping chipperly on her hooves she childishly scanned the horizon, letting out a cute "Hmmmmmmmmmmm" as she did so.

Albert made his way along one of the well-worn paths that crossed the gently rolling hills of the valley. He had trod these paths many times on his journeys, and always wondered who else had crossed them. Though, by the look of things, no one had used this particular road in days. His spear was tied firmly to his side, and he kept his ears alert for any sound that he didn't recognize, or registered as being out of place out here in the open places.

If anyone had seen him today, they would not recognize him as the same young man who had left home two years ago. Albert had snuck past those that protected him and had escaped into the world, imagining it to be a good place because of the things that he had asked to be done, and the care he had given those that were under his care. But a few days out, and the farther he had gotten from home, had shown him a rather shocking tale, and that things were not as he had thought they were. And on that day, the young niaeve man that had set out from home had died.

Now he spent his days on the road, helping people as best he could with his wisdom and his words. Though, there were many times when that was not enough, and he had had to use his staff to it's full advantage. At least out here, he could help his people, and take care of the 'bad guys' that plagued them. He saw first hand what happened to them, and the various disasters, natural or otherwise, that they faced. He knew he should head home, but his feet never seemed to want to travel there. They always took him somewhere else, where there were others that needed help. He was always careful to avoid guards or anyone else he thought that might recognize him.

It wasn't too long before the mare did indeed spot something wandering about---or someone. Hey---they looked oddly familiar. "HEEEEEEEEEEEEY!" she shouted with hesitancy, "HEEEEEEEEEY YOOOOOOOU!" Prancing about a moment and made her way toward the figure amounst the near distant hillsides.

Albert raised his muzzle to the air to scent if there was any hostile creature around or for water, when he heard a voice. Long slender ears flicked sideways as he saw a blue streak in the form of a small mare coming his direction. Now, that was never a good sign. Usually, it meant he was going to get run over.

Sure enough, it was someone; someone who was clothed like her and appeared friendly. She skidded to a halt, bumping her nose into his. "Ow---" she muttered momentarily, before super quickly shaking it off and practically hollaring "HI THERE! You new around here? Or have I seen you before?" she jumped chipperly. "You look like the well traveled type...maybe I haven't" she carried on to herself. "And OOOOOOOH---nice cape!" ^o^

Albert couldn't help but smile at her. It was refreshing to meet people with so much energy to them. They always seemed to energize him as well. He bowed his head slightly in greeting, and gave her a plesant smile. How do you do this day M'lady. I don't think we have met before, as I have not traveled this road before. But I am glad I did come this way, or i would never have met you. His smile widened a bit more. He couldn't help it. That is a beautiful ensemble you have as well m'lady. My name is Albert. May I have the pleasure of knowing yours?

"Wow. That's---a lot of fancy words, you know" laughed the mare, "My name is Meru!" She did one of her signature clutsy sort of twirls and bowed back in a childish attempt to be respectful in return. "I'm common to the river area, so you haven't been here before indeed if you haven't before seen me!" she giggled. "Are you headed somewhere important, or would you like some water and to uh---you could uh---we could adventure together, yes! That's it!" she pipped up, smiling. "Not that I couldn't y'know---take care of myself...going somewhere...alone...I like company---I mean, you'll like my company!!!" she added.

He flicked an ear in surprise. What a straight forward little thing she was. And she had to be young. To speak as she did spoke of it. But he was heartened by her enthusiasm. She apparently didn't know the road, or the dangers that strange stallions could bring to her. No, I'm not going anywhere important Lady Meru, and I am a bit thirsty. I have a question for you though. Why would you want to travel? The road is a hard place to live. Don't you have family somewhere that is waiting for you?

"Nope!" she replied, "I don't know of any family of mine." blaugh After that she paused to think, "Uhm---cause staying in one place is boring? Your legs might freeze up! I like prancing and dancing and traveling is the perfect way to keep them in shape! Plus, who wouldn't want to see new things?!" she chirped. "Hereherehere---" she hustled, looking down at a patch of grass. "Stare there...for like...an hour...and tell me...you wouldn't get bored" she said simply, lifting her head back up.

"And who said I'd live on the road? I'd get stepped on. Usually in travels I'd find a better place to rest...like a grove...or something" she replied seriously, "Plus---it's Meru. Just Meru. 'Lady' makes me sound old. I mean---not that I'm waaaaay young or something...just not old and not too young...I'm...um...me." 3nodding

He snorted a bit in mirth. He couldn't help it. Alright then. Meru it is. And I didn't mean to live on the road. I meant to travel it. To have no home but the path that you walk on. To have no glen or herd to call your own. To only have yourself to rely on. It might keep you in shape Meru, but most adventures are not glamerous or safe. They can be just as boring as standing and looking at that patch of grass... He pointed his muzzle at the aforementioned patch of grass. ... and as dangerous if not more, as facing a cougar by yourself. Do you really want that kind of life for yourself?

"A cougar? PSHT, puhleez. What's this with trying to make up mythological creatures to scare a poor girl?!" Meru teased. "And whaaaat?!" she snorted indignantly, "ALL adventures with Meru present are glamourous!" She stopped a hoof, then giggled. "And what's not 'my' glen? I travel, I find a glen, I sleep in it. It's momentarilly 'my' glen" she laughed. "And beeeeeeeeeesides, now that I have you, I won't have to worry about mythological creatures...like cougars!!!" she added. "Sooooooooooo, water 1st...then where-to?!" she chirped, looking over to the river they would head to in a moment.

Albert blinked in surprise. Did this girl really not know what a cougar was? He cleared his throat, trying to get his thoughts back on track. Well, I had plans to stop by a place near the ocean, and gather some supplies. Then maybe find my way over the mountains to the plains. It is a very long journey and very far. He noticed her turn to the river, made his way over to the bank at a leasurely walk. If there was one thing he had learned, you never rushed unless you had to, especially with the journey he had planned.

He cocked an ear back at her as he walked. You are certain that I am a good companion. Who's to say I am? I could have every intention to hurt you Meru. You shouldn't trust strangers so easily. You may find yourself hurt.

"Hmm---never seen the ocean before...I'll bet it's beautiful!!! Only places I've sighted is some village-thing with people called Kawani's" Meru added thoughtfully as they walked. "And hmm---if you weren't a good companion, I would know."

How exactly she 'would know,' she didn't know. She was very sure of herself though. He didn't look like trouble, but then again she supposed not all who were bad, looked that way. "No, you are not bad Al" she smiled up at him, "I can tell there's gentleness and wisdom to you. No underlying deciet. Trust me, I've been there before."

He nodded. I know where I'm going, or at least the directions to get there. if I change my mind on the way, then I will. I did leave home to explore after all. That doesn't always include following a path or a set road. Albert dipped his muzzle into the cool river as she spoke, and took a deep drink, before raising his head. This time, you just happen to be right Meru. I wouldn't hurt you nor do I intend to. He cocked his head to the side as her other words sunk in. Al?

Virtually ignoring the stallion questioning her nickname for him, she too took a quick drink. "Well! Never fear! Meru the explorer is here! And we will go---wherever the wind takes us!" she declaired triumphantly, "Unless that happens to be somewhere really spooky. Then then wind can go alone." She placed her hoof down in the shallows in a sort of declarative manner---splashing water all over herself and her traveling companion. "Heee---oops. So uh...WHERE TO 1st?!" she asked happily.
