So, I've just started college a few weeks ago... but I've been interested in lolita for a long time. I know a lot of people say that age doesn't matter... but is that the truth? Am I too old to just be starting out?

Most lolitas are actually in the 20s-30s range.

I dunno how old is "just starting college" but I doubt you're hardly any older than I am.

I'm not going to say my age, but suffice to say, I'm a bit older than you. wink

I only seriously got into lolita about a year ago and started buying the clothes last August. I still plan on wearing it for quite a long while, though. I love it too much to be deterred by the "you're XX years old! You're too old for this!" arguments. One of my best lolita friends is actually turning 32 this year, but you'd never know it to look at her. She's beautiful, confident, and does the clothing justice.

So long as it doesn't interfere with my career [don't see how it could, since I mostly only wear it out for social occasions], I'll keep on wearing it as often as I can.

Thanks for your comments.

What the two of you say makes a lot of sense. I was just really concerned with the practicality of investing in a wardrobe such as this, since Lolita is so expensive and tedious. I wonder "should I even bother now? would I still be able to put clothes to use 5+ years from now? would this fashion hinder my social activities within campus?" But I suppose, now that I think of it, the answers to all of these are obvious.

I'd still like to hear form other older lolita! I'd like to know about your lifestyle =]

I think that nobody is too old or too young to start out! [:

You're right. At first, when I started out... I started asking myself if I would put those clothes to use in the future too... Haha. I asked myself a lot of questions about lolita and realised that I like wearing it and it makes me feel unique so it became more of an obsession. haha.

and anyway, if you don't have a use for them in the future... you could always sell them off or keep them for your future children. and you could tell them about your experience and everything. i'm sure it would be lovely... [:

I'm not really "old" per se, but I'm probably one of the oldest lolitas in this guild.
How daunting. o_o;

I don't really live a "lolita lifestyle" though. I'm an art student in university, so wearing lolita every day when I have to worry about ink [I take printmaking, which is incredibly messy] or biology labs that might get me all mussed up, it's not practical. Also, I feel that changing your personality and daily habits to suit your clothing is ridiculous; it ought to be the other way around. You wear whatever style suits your personality and lifestyle. If that makes sense? I mostly wear lolita on the weekends when I'm out with friends, or for special occasions and days when my classload is minimally messy. For example, tomorrow is a critique day in printmaking and a non-lab day for biology, so I might dress up if I manage to get my apartment straightened out tonight.

As for how people respond to it on campus, it's a mix. My professors tend to rib on me [but they tease me for everything and anything; they keep asking when I'm going to graduate so they don't have to any more. ._.;; ], a few students think it's cool, and I hear a lot of "Strawberry Shortcake!" or "Red Riding Hood!" remarks. It's not a big deal and you tend to get over it pretty quickly, to be honest.

I'm 18, going to start college next year but still intend on wearing lolita for many years to come. It's expensive but if you feel great and are willing to hear "lil bo peep" from time to time, it's worth it.
But i have lifestyles where it's pretty comfortable to be in, although i'm going into Business, Marketing and Economics, weekends i do runways and lots of fashion/gothic related events where it's more appropriate.
Although when i become a business owner myself i would prefer to totally abolish dress codes =D

I'm 23 and haven't been wearing lolita regularly for very long, but as everyone else has said, I intend to wear it as long as I can. I'm a freelance writer, so it can't really interfere with anything career-wise and as far as social activities, nobody's too put off by it, so it's fine.

My mom, who is almost 50, dresses Lolita on occasion - infact she is the one who introduced me to the fashion and bought me my first dress when I was 12!

Though, she dosn't dress in it everyday, you still get the point that you can never really be to old to enjoy dressing in it.

When I go to Harajuku on weekends that I visit my grandma in tokyo - i meet lots of loli's and most are older than me, between the ages of 20-30 like amanikitty said.

I acctually went to the maruione fashion event for a day - most people there were in there late 20's or older.
