The Voice of Death
Once there was a man who had grown old and rich, and he thought to himself, "The only thing I have left to fear is death." So he searched the whole world for someplace where people did not die. At last, he came across a place where no one died, but instead they were called away by a mysterious voice, and never seen again. So he settled down there with the thought that he simply would not answer to the voice when it called.
One day, when at the barber's shop, he heard a voice, and exclaimed to it, "Call all you want! I shall not come!" But the voice kept on calling and calling. Eventually he became angered, and leapt from the chair, chasing after the figure only he could see and hear. The barber in turn chased after him, miffed that a customer would rush out like so. They ran beyond the town's borders, and suddenly, the man vanished from before the barber. Startled, the barber stopped, and beheld a great chasm in the earth. He peered down it, but could see no end.
The barber went back to the town and told all its people about the chasm that had been claiming lives, and they returned to the site to see for themselves. However, when they arrived, the chasm had vanished as if it never were.
From then onwards, those who lived in that land began dying just like everyone else the world over, and no one ever heard the voice of death again.
