User Image Hadaya was running. It was not his usual run, where he was blindly wandering into the night for body building reasons. It was a flat out, breathless, terrorized run that ignored the burning in his lungs, the ache in his legs, the weight of his body. He tore across the plains at a pace that was beyond his capability, that he should not be able to sustain, with a goal in mind.

He saw the cavern ahead of him, familiar from the one time he had been shown it. He hoped against hope that she had meant what she had said: that this was a safe place for him, and open to him at any time. He needed some place safe, some place to hide and think and figure out what had just happened to him. He did not know if she was there, or if she could help, and it didn't matter. All he knew was she had made him a promise, and he was desperate for the comfort he might find in going to her.

She was a friend, after all. Maybe she would know what was going on with him. He did not slow down as he entered the cave, crashing over a rock and slamming into the ground with a resounding thud. Letting out a pained cry, he flopped onto his side, unable to catch his breath and shuddering with the effort. He wanted to call for his friend, whose name he could not remember, but his mind had shut down. He couldn't think how to speak, and would not have been able to find the words even if his throat was not constricted.

Sinasina had been sleeping in the rear of the day, sprawled on her side with her head right near the wall. Her tail twitched, whiskers flinching as she struggled to hunt something in her dreams. She wasn’t doing too much thrashing, though, seemingly aware of what was lying in front of her stomach looking from a meal. A tiny, pale purple cub was there, whimpering and digging at her tummy for something to drink. Eventually she found what she was looking for, suckling without further distress.

Her new daughter. The only of her cubs she seemed to have in the cave. Where the males were, she wouldn’t say.

Mostly because she was still sleeping.

Still sleeping, that is, until the young lion burst into the cave, his cry waking her up instantly. Her head slammed against the wall, the thunk echoing through the cave. Her jump had made the baby start to fuss, the small leopon squealing with distress, and starting to wiggle about on the floor. Sinasina sat up, giving her baby a few assuring licks before looking over at Hadaya.

“Hadaya!” she gasped, watching the older cub pant, “what’s wrong? What happened?” She got to her feet, letting her cub moan herself to sleep as she moved over to check on her young friend. “Hadaya?” she asked again, “are you alright?”

Hadaya struggled to roll onto his stomach, panting heavily. His eyes were blurry and his head in a daze, but the familiar voice cut through to reach his conscious mind with enough clarity to calm him. Swallowing hard, clearing his throat of the bile that had been collecting there, he gagged and shook his head to clear away the lingering confusion.

"Oh!" He yelped, leaping to his feet and backing up. He tripped over the same rock that had felled him on the way in, sending him spilling onto his backside with his legs flailing in every direction. Righting himself and turning a full circle in an effort to find Sinasina again, he forced himself to stop moving for a half a minute to allow some coherent words to fall out of his mouth.

"I'm sorry! I didn't mean to burst in like that. I didn't... I didn't know you had... that little baby... I didn't mean to scare it! Or you! Not that you looked scared, just surprised, but I didn't mean to surprise you either. I shouldn't have come here." He shook his head, his body backing itself up again without his consent, "I'm stupid, I shouldn't have come."

He had not even realized she had been pregnant, and yet there she was with a baby that was clearly her own. Feeling stupid, immature and like a failure, he found himself on the verge of tears as he looked at her, shaking his head and backing up in small, shuffling steps.

“Whoa whoa!” Sinasina said, smiling at the frantic nature of the boy. It was difficult to forget someone like Hadaya. “You don’t need to be so upset,” she offered lightly, “the child isn’t frightened, and I’m fine too. You don’t have to look at me in that way, honest. Take a moment to catch your breath.” She moved away at that, nodding her head to indicate he should follow her inside. Her offer of an open cave wasn’t gone simply because she was tending to a cub.

She wasn’t interested enough in the cub to take complete concentration on it anyway. Still, she knew the baby was fussing now, the wiggling on the floor getting on her nerves. Sighing heavily, she bent down, picking the cub up by the back of her neck and letting her dangle from her mouth. The swaying in the air calmed the baby, the whimpering fading.

Putting her down, Sinasina strolled around the pale violet lump, lying down once more to let her go back to suckling. “Come over here,” she said to Hadaya, “and tell me what put you into such a panic! You looked like you had seen some kind of ghost.”

Not only was she genuinely concerned with the state of the boy, she was also eager to hear news from outside the den. Recently it felt like she had been trapped in her own home thanks to the litter. This was not what she had agreed. What was worse was the fact that she was starting to grow attached to the little annoyances.

She wasn’t ready to be ‘mommy’.

Hadaya remained where he had backed himself, looking at the floor miserably as Sinasina tried to convince him that he had done no harm. It seemed true enough, the cub quietly nursing now that she had returned to it, and she wasn't yelling at him for being a nuisance. That, at least, was a step in a positive direction. Taking one step back into the cave, he blinked as he forced himself to calm down.

He was still trembling when he finally opened his mouth to speak.

"It wasn't a ghost," he said, thinking she knew she had guessed correctly when she told him he had seen something, just missing on the final detail of what. He was not in the right frame of mind for common sayings, any metaphor flying way over his jumbled head.

"I saw something weird," he confessed after a long, silent battle with himself. He was debating if he really wanted to bother her with what he was sure would turn out to be a trivial matter, not wanting to annoy her and drive her away from him with his constant complaining. Unfortunately, nature won out and he could not skip the chance to whine about his misfortunes.

"It was like a memory, except it wasn't mine. And it was so real. I was walking, right in the middle of the day, and suddenly I saw this other weird place, and these lionesses I've never even met. It felt so real though, I don't know what it was. It wasn't a dream, and I'm not making it up." He said the last sentence rather defensively, to preempt her from blaming him for such things.

Sinasina listened, a smile spreading over her face as she slowly came to understand what had been happening to the boy. She had learned through stories of the Gods what his powers were, and knew that what had happened really hadn’t been some kind of dream and certainly hadn’t been a ghost.

But how to tell a boy prone to panic about the special gift that was now inside of him?

“Don’t look so frightened,” she offered after a moment, “I believe you. I know what you saw was real and that you’re not making it up. Come over here and sit down. I’d go over to you but this child whines if I move too far away from it. Come then and settle down, I’ll explain it to you… if I can.” She wasn’t the best at telling stories, so she decided to skip the whole ordeal and just dive right into the nature of his condition instead. No need to give him nightmares about Gods or something. Knowing him he would take a good thing and fret over it like the world was going to end.

“You have a special power very few animals share,” she started gently, “Gods had the power first, they still do, but now we mortals sometimes get blessed with it. You’re a seer, Hadaya. That means you can sometimes have visions into the future, as well as ones from the past. They’re like day dreams, or normal dreams, right? But they’re not something you need to be upset about! What you have is a very special power! It makes you incredibly lucky. Once you get a better handle on it, you could even use your visions to try and help other creatures.”

She sighed softly, chuckling. “I know it’s a lot to deal with all at once, but I’m sure you’ll get used to it. You’re a brave, strong lion! And now you have a very special power.”

Hadaya ventured closer to her, walking with slow, awkwardly placed foot falls. It was as if each paw weighed tons, and he had to drag himself against the will and laws of physics. Stumbling a bit, he sat down soon enough, still a good distance from her, but at least he was inside the cave completely.

"Power? It doesn't seem that great to me. It doesn't even make sense. I have enough trouble dealing with real dreams. I don't think I need fake ones messing me up. That is so lame, why do I have this? Why can't you have this?"

He pouted, plopping himself down on his paws and trying not to move. He was upset to have hurt himself, to have embarrassed himself, and now to be saddled with this useless skill that was some burden from Gods he didn't even know anything about. Didn't seem right, being given this and not having a choice in it. But then, he supposed that's how Gods worked.

"How do you know so much about it? I've never even heard about it. I don't even know what to do with it. I mean, I can't tell what the stupid visions mean, so why even get them? I'm not made to help people. But, you have... uhm... a nice cub?"

It was not subtle, or well timed, but it was a change in conversation.

“You’re looking at it the wrong way!” Laughed Sinasina, “you should think of this as a gift! That’s what it really is- a gift from the Gods given specially for you. It might seem like a burden right now, but someday, hopefully, you’ll learn to appreciate it. Maybe you’ll become used to the vision and they’ll help you help other animals. Don’t you think that’s cool? You could be like a hero of sorts. The ladies would love you for that,” she chuckled lightly, giving him a teasing wink.

“I wish that I could have that power. Sometimes I think even a glimpse into the future might be grand. But I wasn’t lucky enough to be blessed with it. Still, it’s nice to say that I know someone who is a seer!”

She listened to him carry on, smiling warmly. “Oh, you’re just fussing because you don’t understand yet. Give it a little time before you decide to hate it! How many visions have you had, one? Sometimes the seer powers are weak and you can’t do much with them, true, but other times they get more potent and you can clearly see into someone’s future. Even your own future!”

Stopping, she looked down at her cub, smiling slightly. It was a half-hearted show of thanks for the rather awkward comment.

“Yes,” she said faintly, “I haven’t named her yet. I’m not sure what to call her. She doesn’t look anything like me. Nor her father. There must have been some stray genes in the pool or something.” The baby then gurgled, spitting up the milk she had decided she no longer wished to swallow.

Hadaya looked at Sinasina, wondering vaguely who the father of that purple cub was. He had half imagined it would have been a purple leopard, but there were a few things wrong with that theory. First, she had just said it looked nothing like either of them, and second, it didn't really look like a leopard cub at all. In his wanderings, Hadaya had seen many little families, of lion and leopard.

This thing looked like it might be a cross between the two.

He winced as it spat up, looking away awkwardly as if he wasn't supposed to see a baby cub making a mess. Throwing up was a private matter, after all, and this seemed close enough to that, that it was rude to keep watching. Shuffling his paws against the floor of the den, he frowned at the wall.

"She's cute, but..." he cleared his throat, hoping not to sound like a complete moron, "where did she come from? I mean, I know... you know... how... but... the last time I saw you I hadn't realized that you even... but then here it is and... are there more? She's... cute, though."
PostPosted: Thu Sep 18, 2008 12:39 pm

Sinasina smiled. “When we met I was pregnant,” she admitted, “but you were so frantic and upset there didn’t seem much point in bringing it up. I mean, would you have mentioned it out of the blue when there was no real moment to talk about it? Anyway, I had met a lion and we… well… hit it off, I suppose you could say. He wanted cubs and I wanted… how you make cubs. So things worked out for the both of us in the end. He got two males and a female. I don’t know where the boys are right now and I don’t honestly care. I never wanted to raise cubs.”

Wincing, she knew that probably sounded really blunt and horrible, her head shaking quickly. “I mean, maybe someday. But I’m not ready. And now… I have this one. This little female here is the one I suppose will be staying with me. Unless that brute brings back the other two. But that wasn’t part of the deal.”

She bent over for a moment, cleaning her messy baby, who gave a huff of a purr to the touch. The tiny creature then started to wiggle again, moving herself along the ground towards Hadaya’s voice. Sinasina, smiling, watched the child.

“You can help me name her, if you’d like to,” she offered, “she seems to like the sound of your voice.”

Hadaya felt like he was the most oblivious creature on the planet. How he had failed to notice her pregnancy was beyond him. Shirking a bit at her recap of events, he cleared his throat and looked around awkwardly until she proclaimed that she did not want to raise cubs. That seemed an ominous sentiment for the young cub that was wiggling on the floor.

"Right. I can only imagine... having to take care of a cub before... you know... you're ready. I don't know how I'd deal with it-" he cut himself off, backing up suddenly as the cub made its way toward him. He looked at Sinasina helplessly, as if he was afraid he might hurt it or, worse yet, it might hurt him. waving his paw, he tried to shoo the cub back to its mother, not realizing it had its eyes shut.

"Name her? I'd end up calling it the first thing that came into my head. Right now it's 'creepy'. Wait, I'm sorry. That's awful. She is a cute cub... she's just... crawling and... not looking. It's... making me uncomfortable. Why is she crawling toward me? She doesn't even know me."

He sounded upset, and he was. He did not want to traumatize a cub with his ridiculous aptness for failing at life. He was also very concerned about the cub throwing up on him.
PostPosted: Tue Sep 23, 2008 2:12 pm

Sinasina laughed. “You make it look like she’s going to kill you! She’s not attacking, you know, she wants to know about your scent. Everything is new to her and she’s trying to figure things out. Don’t look so horrified- I promise she’s not going to harm you. She’s soft and has no teeth yet, what could she possibly do to you?”

The baby continued to wiggle, air brushing past her only driving her more towards the cub. Now she figured she had worked her way back to her mother and wanted to get close to her. She was starting to feel cold out there in the open and longed to have soft fur to get up close to. Maybe get herself a snack while she was there. Whimpering, she started to kick her back feet, as though trying to propel herself forward. It wasn’t working very well, however.

She rolled onto her side, paws flailing.

“Look what you’re doing to my daughter,” teased the leopard, “don’t worry. When she was first born I thought she was creepy too. But I don’t think that’s a very good name for her. The others half-lions might tease her for it. Anyway, she doesn’t have to know you! That’s what she’s trying to do; she’s trying to get to know you. Just let her touch you. Then you can bring her back over to me and I won’t let her near you again.”

The baby, however, didn’t need to be helped. While the two were talking she had managed to wiggle herself over to Hadaya, little mouth pressing against one of his toes, which she mistook for something else entirely. Sucking on the toe, she didn’t seem at all bothered by the tiny point of his retracted claw.

Hadaya was absolutely mortified. He did not know whether he should lift his paw away or not, hating the idea of the cub trying to suckle from it but not wanting to scare the wiggling purple thing. He looked up a Sinasina with an unabashed expression of disgust and horror, his eyes welled with concern that was not for the cub, but for himself.

"It's... what is it doing? I don't... uhhh..." he ended up going against his impulse and did move his paw away, careful not to upset the wobbly cub as he patted it gingerly on the head, "go back to your mom, little... purple... cub."

Not the best at baby speak, he spoke in a loud whisper and failed at coming up with an endearing nickname for it. He looked up at Sinasina again, his expression not having changed much. He did not think himself capable of picking the cub up and taking her back over to the leopard.

"Can you... come get it?"
PostPosted: Fri Sep 26, 2008 10:04 am

“Nope,” replied the leopard quickly enough, offering Hadaya a grin, “how are you ever going to learn if you don’t take chances with things? Don’t worry, you’re not going to hurt her, I promise. Just be calm and let her do as she pleases. You’ll see that you won’t be able to hurt her if you don’t do anything brash.” She smiled almost teasingly. Poor lion. It must be so hard to be such a failure. Not that she would say that to his face, of course.

She could only try to help him gain some more positive life experiences. At least that way he wouldn’t always feel like life was picking on him.

“If you’re really uncomfortable,” she said, “pick her up gently in your mouth by her neck and bring her back over to me. But I’m not going to take her, and I better not see you pushing her across the floor.”

The baby wasn’t at all bothered by Hadaya’s hesitance, keeping close. Finding no food in the paw, she wiggled herself further towards. If she couldn’t get food, she could at least get sleep. She coiled herself against his back leg, purring very faintly. She seemed quite happy to be near him.

Sinasina could only hope the little nameless thing could bring Hadaya some joy.

Hadaya looked like he was ready to cry. Or yell. Or pass out. He watched as the lion-leopard mix moved closer, a shudder going down his spine as it worked without opening its eyes. Miserably, he shifted as it curled against him, not moving out of its touch but not leaning toward it. He didn't want to encourage it.

"But I'll drop it," he whined, his plan of nudging the hybrid carefully across the cave floor with his nose suddenly imploding. He grunted looking down at it as if it presented him an impossible situation. A trap he couldn't think his way out of.

His expression softened the slightest bit as he watched it, hearing the content sound it was emitting. At least it was so young, it couldn't judge him. And it was cute, in a creepy way.

Still, he didn't want to put it in his mouth just yet. Looking back at Sinasina helplessly, he shook his head, "I'm going to be stuck here forever. I don't want to hurt her... she's weird enough already." As he spoke, he moved his back foot out, carefully pushing her away from him, in the hopes that it would give up and go back to its mom.
