The dark cub was snoozing in a tree, on the other side of where her 'family' had stopped to rest. She'd gotten good at staying in trees...she'd watched how Chuk had done it, and imitated accordingly. The trees gave Ri privacy when she wanted it. Every now and then, some tree-dweller skittered around her, but she paid them no mind. She wasn't hungry.

The flutter of wings accompanied a slight weight at the end of the branch. Matata had flown a ways...but it wasn't hard to follow the path of the former Aikanaro'hini slave and her stolen brood. Little Ri had made sure of that. The magpie had to hand it to the cub...she was crafty.
He scoot down the branch towards her. "Matata, here to bring and receive news."

Ri looked to where the magpie had landed and smiled. Another reason to be away from her 'family'.
"Good. Nyota told my father of my plans then? And how are my sisters that remained?" Vicious she was...but she wanted to keep her demon-sisters as allies. "I have much for you to take home, Matata. Much indeed..."

Matata nodded. "He did. I don't think he was very...enthused about your leaving like this Ri. For that matter, I think it's a bad idea, with the pride so young...But I am not your adviser or overseer." To any other member of the pride (save the little Mvua), he wouldn't have dared the last sentence. But he knew Ri wouldn't whack him...if only because she needed him to relay.
"Your sisters are doing well. Kasdeya especially! She's made an ally out of the new Ele'aine...and at least one of her cubs." He clicked his beak. "You'd do good to not aggravate your sister in the future."

Ri nodded. She didn't expect her father to take things well. But Ri knew what she needed to do. The pride had to grow. And someone had to be OUT to spread the word. She happened to cultivate the opportunity to be the only demon to go 'out'.
"I do not intend to have my sister as an enemy. A rival, certainly...enemy, no. A rival helps to make one better, Matata. But an enemy...an enemy is one who has everything to lose in going against you, but does so anyways. Enemies are dangerous." She would need a quiet one among those she gathered to herself...Like Mora'era. She needed to cultivate a demon like her...To ensure any enemies that arose quickly fell.
"I found another demon. He's strong, much bigger than I despite the fact he's younger. And..." Her grin was feral. "He's mine. Tell Nyota I have another loyal to me. He even looks perfect...Dark and fiery."

Well...Matata knew just how devious the cub was, but this female certainly knew how to play the game that the demon-pride played. And well, if the light in her eyes said anything.
"Well said, little demon. Hakuna was right in choosing to invest her time into you and Nyota." The bird chortled. "Once I finally find a worthy female, I'll be sure one of my chicks goes to you." Yes...little Ri would owe him a favor, and be able relay her information faster. A win/win situation for both.
"I shall be sure to pass on the news to Nyota. Now...I'm afraid I have some bad news."

Ri giggled and nodded. A demon-bird of her own...oh the things she could accomplish with such an ally, carefully cultivated! Enough food and shinies and the bird would be loyal to her to the end. Her good mood disappeared at the mention of 'bad news'.
Ruby eyes narrowed at the magpie. "How bad. And do Nyota and Hakuna know of it."

Matata nodded. He knew Ri would not hurt him...but the bird knew she was likely to fly into a rage at the next creature that wasn't a member of her mother's motley little 'family'.
"The ceremony to gain Heir status has been established...you can only do it shortly before you become an apprentice. Ri...I can let you know before your sisters are due to take the tests...But unless you return...you can never step up to the throne of your father." There. He said it. He was likely going to have her go quiet on him.
He wasn't scared of her yelling...he was scared of her quiet.

Just as he thought, the cub grew deadly silent. Her eyes stared at him deadpan, almost as if she couldn't believe what had come out of his beak. A few minutes passed, the air tense as neither spoke. And then Ri broke the silence.
"You're not lying. This...this requires some planning. Some thought...How long should I have?" She could not return! Not yet! She didn't have all she needed at her side! She needed a quiet one...her Ketu...another who made causing pain into an art...there was so much to do! It was infuriating.

"I do not know exactly...but I would say a moon or two." He did not like this at all. Hakuna was mad for letting the cubs use him like this. Especially with two as insane as Nyota and Ri. "As I said...I can let you know before your sisters take it. But if your wish to be an Heir...YOU MUST BE THERE. There is no 'other way'."

"You have done well, Matata." It was not his fault her father and the other king had decided on such a thing. This was not going well...not at all. But she could work it to her advantage...somehow...She would figure something out. After all, she was not stupid. Ri was a smart little demon, and she would use that intelligence!
She waved a paw at the bird. "You may return home now. Before anyone notices you and everything unravels." She felt very tired all of a sudden, like the weight had crushed down upon her...

Matata bowed one final time and took wing. This situation...it did not bode well for the plans Ri and Nyota had. He would need to be highly alert...He sighed. If things kept going this way, he was likely to end up as dinner.
