Let me tell you about something that has been bothering me in the General Discussion. Lack of self-distance. People take things to heart way too easily, and cannot joke about themselves. It is said that the more issues one has, the more potential one has to be funny.
I think a big problem not only in the GD but everywhere else is that people take themselves too seriously. Personally, I can't stand people like that. It's very complicated to socialise with them. Come on, if someone insults you - use the wit and self-distance you have to make them shut up.
Lack of self-distance is one of the main reasons for pointless arguments. Agree/disagee?

Self-distancing seems to be strictly proportional to intelligence, which is something the GD doesn't exactly have in bucketloads. You'll see that simple-minded people are far more easily provoked than those with the intelligence to realise that they're either being wound up or no offence is intended. After all, if one is agitated online, it's usually for one of those reasons, so by retaliating one is either jumping straight through the hoop or completely overreacting to a joke.
This is what makes trolling so popular in the GD. People say something blatantly offensive and start a huge retarded argument. Do you think morons like that would still be polluting the GD if people just shrugged off their stupid topics and debated something worthwhile instead?
Like most of the problems in the world, the fall of the GD can be blamed entirely on stupid people.

It's not exactly stupid people, or intelligent people. It can be hereditary. If most of your family doesn't have the best temperament and are easily provoked, most likely you will be too. Anyway, I have to take s**t from people everyday at my school, and I don't try and make them shut up, I just ignore it. Because as soon as I backtalk to that crude White or black kid, they'll bring in their "gang-bang" parade, because they can't fight without help. So to avoid any drama, I just ignore it.
So yes, I'd said lack of self-distance does equal up to useless yelling.

This is way more then GD thing considering it pretty much encompasses the whole of the internet. Seeing as you don't have to meet these people eye to eye, hell what's to stop you from calling them a one eyed slag? What's to stop that other person from reacting?
It doesn't matter who you are other then the issue of 'i can get away with it here and not be viewed down upon.'
Not to put a damper on the parade, but there are times where you shouldn't have to distance yourself if you don't want to. lol
I myself though find ignoring or distancing myself not as fun. I'm not stupid enough to reply with anger though lol I'm more clever then that plus it's easy to placate people (trolls, spammers, angry people). I can get most trolls to start talking to me intelligently, hell i'll even add them to my friendlist if they were interesting enough. You all should try it some time, the results can astound you. Then again, maybe you shouldn't try. Better leave it to professionals xd

I completely agree that most people should just ignore the insults and leave it be. So this one new guy had only been on Gaia for a total of not even an hour because his friend had made him join...and instead of starting in the newbie center or the CB, he waltzed over to the GD and expected everyone there to befriend him just like that.
One insult and he went off like dynamite, cussing everyone out and calling them gay. He was flamming and spamming and breaking every rule posible, not that the Mods would do anything about it. So me and a few other GD'ers were up trying to tick him off all night and we ended up discussing pie in the very end before he finally got banned ^^
Pretty funny really.

Honestly? I like it when someone insults me. Why?
...Because it gives me a chance to come up with an intellectual comeback that will probably leave them in ruins. I get fed up with the 'Stfu noob ******** gay peice of s**t a**' crap you normally find.
That was an actual quote from youtube. Proves how smart some people are. ________________________________________________________________
That was a little bit off-subject, sorry.
Yes, people do go over the top. I dont see the point in doing so, though. But, I still think that we need Trolls. Not just because its hilarious watching people's replys to them, but if it wasnt for them, Gaia wouldnt have so many members or be so popular.
Seriously, try imagine the internet without Arguments. Impossible! xp
