there are five main elements and these are:
Fire (katon)
Water (suiton)
Earth (doton)
Wind (fuuton)
Lightning (raiton)
now there are sub elements. these works if you combine two or more elements.
Water+Earth=Wood (mokuton)
Water+Wind=Ice (hyouton)
Earth+fire=lava(youton) *NEW*

1.)academy students to chuunin rank are allowed with only one main element
2.)jounin are allowed upto two elements
3.)anbus to hokage are allowed with three elements
note: some ninjas esp. chosen akatsuki or the captain is allowed to use all main elements

there are three known types of chakra:
1.) body chakra: this is what ninjas are using to create jutsus
2.) bijuu chakra: the chakra of tailed fox
3.) natural chakra: it is unlimited and it helps your body recover faster.
this is chakra that you are drawing from the
environment. jiraiya used this chakra. naruto is still
learning.

two ways of using chakra:
1.) physical recomposition: it is when you manipulate chakra w/o using elements
ex. rasengan
2.) elemental recomposition: manipulating chakra w/ the use of elements
ex. chidori, fuuton rasengan(complete rasengan)
