Plastic Bertrand Commercial:
It is freaking me out a little that they are using "Ca Plane Pour Moi" for Gossip Girls. On the one hand, it's a world of cool that plastic Bertrand is likely getting royalties for it. I mean, if he's alive and all, I haven't checked, and it's cool introducing modern teens to classic punk, especially weirdly upbeat Belgian classic punk, but at the same time... Eeeeew! Classic punk being used to sell modern teen drama. So utterly wrong and anti-punk and disturbing.

Wrong and disturbing is Target using a classic Beatles tune, horribly sung by nameless nobodies who couldn't get a real recording contract. The pun (Hello, Good Buy) only rubs salt in the wound. Michael Jackson (who still owns far too much of the Beatles catalog) needs to be drawn and quartered.

* I hate the clean and clear commercial. What is up with that "branch out" thing? Is her self esteem so low she is putting her whole life on hold over acme? If so, that's really creepy.

* Can they stop airing valentine's commercials? Please?

*The smooth away commercials make my skin crawl. It's sandpaper! They are rubbing their bodies with sandpaper! *shudder*

I am hating those Direct TV commercials with the intervention style. I already subscribe to them, leave me alone. xd

I hate them too. It's belittling people who really do struggle with addiction and those of us who actually care about them. One might argue that more television is addictive as well. Having other things to do than sit around watching all the time is not something requiring an intervention.

Am I the only one who finds the "No stank you" commercials condescending? They are so transparently made by middle aged people trying to design something that with "look cool" to kids and failing miserably. do they really think kids are that dumb?

I have started wishing that terrible Seth Rogan movie will just come out already so the disgusting commercials will go away. I'm not sure what it's called, but judging from the commercials, there is a cute brain damaged woman working at a mall. SR plays a mall cop who convinces her someone is trying to kill her. gets her falling down drunk and date rapes her. It's supposedly a love story and a comedy. Eeew. Why is terrorizing and date raping a brain damaged woman meant to be charming?

Lulls, my mother had the same issue with the last commercial. I got her to buy it for me. It doesn't hurt at all but it also doesn't work. It does 'polish' after one has already shaved.

I know I generally only bother to talk about ads that annoy me, but I have to give serious props to Sterling Saving's Bank for the really clever psychology on the ad their running here. It's a simple premise: A man has discovered his bank was bought by a big East Coast based bank. He calls up, then has to explain where Washington state is to the customer service person. The psychology is so clever, using regional sympathies and the uncertainty caused by bank collapse and the monster mergers to get people to invest with them instead. It's beautifully low key. They imply security and customer service without ever saying outright what it's all about. The competition stays unnamed. Also, who here hasn't had trouble reaching east coast based customer service for things like student loans or credit cards. It's manipulative, like any ad, but the use of subtext here fascinates me. I have no idea of the bank's actual qualitry, but they certainly know how to pick advertising.

Great moments in bad ad placement: soft rock compilation album of sappy love songs of the 70's on a classic hard metal festival show. I guarantee they did not garner many calls from that ad, as for the most part, a deep and abiding love of the Carpenters and a passion for ACDC and Quiet Riot are generally mutually exclusive.

I do not want to hear about gaps in my intestines while I'm eating. That Danactive commercial is disgusting.

"Experts in packing" clearly means something different to me than it does to UPS. The guy's smug "I have a secret" smile at the end of the commercial reads a whole different way to me.

I don't want to associate Spongebob with sex. The opposite of thanks to BP for searing that image in my brain.

There's a commercial for a digital pregnancy test that claims ... I'm forgetting the figure, but it's scary... a large number of women misread a traditional pregnancy test. I get maybe being colour blind so the pink/blue might be hard, but can't tell the difference between one or two stripes? Really? It you are two dumb to count to two, you need to get yourself sterilized. A majority of my lifeskills students over the years could count to two. Seriously, if you are that stupid, take yourself out of the gene pool, you are not even close to up to child rearing if the pregnancy test is too complicated.

I resent Verizon ad that implies people who say they aren't interested in fancy phones have secret phone envy. No really, I don't. I use my phone only to call out, usually triple A, a Doctor, arrange a meet up, or for take out food. I do not want to spend hours hunched uncomfortably over a tiny screen trying to get my spastic hands to work tiny keys. I totally get that some people love their phones and there's nothing wrong with that, but I really, really am not interested. I'm betting I'm not the only one. Making commercials that directly insult folks who for one reason or other do not want a whole bunch of apps we'd never use is not a way to get us to upgrade our phones. In my case it makes me wildly hostile. I guess I just don't like being called a thief and a lier a couple of times every hour.
