Here I will be working on my summary of the first (or first four) chapters of Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons.

Chapter 1:
Flora is orphaned at the age of twenty with not much more than a vast education and good looks.
She visits her friend, Ms. Smiling, who tells her she should get a job.
Ms. Smiling herself uses various guys who are courting her in order to accomplish her own wants.
She thinks Flora's plan is preposterous. She especially thinks that her even considering living in the country is going to be incredibly short-lived, since Flora isn't used to the country life.
Flora intends to change her living conditions as time goes on to fit her own personal wants.

Chapter 2:
Flora plans to at least pretend that she is getting ready to write a book.
She writes letters to all of her family members, including the ones in the country. She just wants to live off of someone who will take care of her out of pity.

Note: It is odd that Ms Smiling is fascinated by bras. especially since later some would consider bras an oppressive device forced on women to keep them in line (or something like that.)

Also, the positions Ms Smiling tells Flora to acquire might be considered slightly demeaning to some modern "liberated women"
