At age one DJ and his family moved to Fairbury, Illinois where he grew up. His father left the family when DJ was three years old. He grew up in a house with no television because of his mother's religious beliefs. His mother started to teach him about music and he instantly became obsessed, taking up the piano at the age of 3 and played his first recital at 5.
When he was 6 years old, Ashba started to study the drums, finding anything to resemble a drum set, such as pots, pans and garbage cans.
Ashba worked in a cornfield until he earned enough money to buy his first guitar, a white Harmony "Flying V." On his bus rides to work, he made a friend of a guitarist from a local band, who used a pocket knife to carve a fretboard into the seat in order to demonstrate new guitar chords. [1]
As a 16th birthday present, Ashba's father took him to his first concert - Mötley Crüe's Girls, Girls, Girls tour, inspiring him to pursue music as a career. At the age of 19, he drove to Hollywood, California where he joined the band Barracuda, touring with them for 2 years before releasing his instrumental album "ASHBA - Addition to the Friction."
Now, Motley Crue's bassist Nikki Sixx, James Michaels, and Ashba have formed a band (Sixx AM) to create a soundtrack to Nikki's book The Heroin Diaries: A Year In The Life of a Shattered Rockstar.
