Resident Evil 5, known in Japan as Biohazard (Baiohazādo Faibu?), is the forthcoming installment in the Resident Evil survival horror video game series, which is set to debut for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It will be developed and published by Capcom. Capcom officially announced Resident Evil 5 on July 20, 2005, and is scheduled for release on March 12, 2009 in Japan, and March 13, 2009 in North America and Europe.

Gameplay
Jun Takeuchi, the game's producer, stated that Resident Evil 5 will feature similar gameplay to Resident Evil 4. The player will control Chris Redfield similarly to how the player controlled Leon S. Kennedy in Resident Evil 4. The game's environment will also play a significant role. Also, the game implements various lighting effects. If Redfield moves between bright and dark areas his eyes will have to adjust, causing the player to briefly lose some visual of their surroundings. The player will be able to take cover and dodge (using a similar control scheme in God Hand). The Mercenaries minigame, which was featured in both Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4, will also make a return in Resident Evil 5.

The game will also feature new types of enemies. The extended E3 2007 trailer revealed several sequences involving Redfield attacking hordes of fleet-footed enemies, who possessed melee weapons. Takeuchi has also stated the game's enemies will also possess human-like intelligence and awareness. Furthermore, he stated they will be different from the previous ganados. Takeuchi said that they have "greatly increased the number of weapon variations" as compared with the previous games in the series, while the requisite handguns and shotguns also return.

In an interview with XBOX360ISM, Keiji Inafune briefly stated that the game will feature some online elements. Resident Evil 5's main story mode can be played with two players, in a co-operative online mode. The feature will allow players to enter or leave anytime during the game. Both players will not always stick together, and can be separated at points during the gameplay.

Plot
Few details have been released about the game's storyline other than the fact that the setting will have a similar feel to the film Black Hawk Down. Takeuchi added that the development team is composed of staff members who worked on the first Resident Evil. He has stated that Resident Evil 5 will be an actual sequel to the Resident Evil series. Before Takeuchi took over, the game's former producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi stated "it's safe to say that Resident Evil 5 will naturally proceed from where Resident Evil 4 left off."

In a July 2007 Famitsu interview, producer Jun Takeuchi revealed the main playable character as Chris Redfield and the game takes place ten years after the events of the original Resident Evil. The story will explore Chris' life during the ten year interval between the two games. During the game's events, he is a member of a group known as BSAA, and sent to investigate an incident in a desert area that serves as the game's setting. Takeuchi also confirmed that a female character from the series, who is seen briefly at the end of the trailer, will appear in the game. In an online interview, Takeuchi revealed that the game's plot will be set in Africa, and will concern "the origins of the virus." He also stated one of the plot's key elements will revolve around the whereabouts of STARS and Redfield's life after the first Resident Evil game.

UK-based publication Xbox World 360 revealed that the game takes place in an area named Kijuju , which is near a line of active volcanoes that stretch across Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Kenya, where volcanic activity is threatening to release a previously dormant virus. They also confirmed the return of recurring antagonist Albert Wesker, as well as Sherry Birkin (last seen in Resident Evil 2). Another game trailer that was released on May 31, 2008 depicted a female character named Sheva Alomar who is an agent of West African branch of the B.S.A.A. (Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance), who will assist Redfield.

Alomar will follow Redfield, while supplying him with ammo and support. She will also be able to engage enemies, and will require the player's assistance from time to time.

Resident Evil 5 is looking to be a huge release for the series when it comes out. The new co-op mode they have for the game sounds promising as well, especially with the fact that Chris's new partner in the game can hold her own against the zombies/infected and be used in a way that I have been demanding of Resident Evil every time I played a game in the series XD

I'm excited mrgreen

I think so, too. I'm not too excited in it anyways (except for the fact that I haven't any PS3, X-Box 360 or Wii).
I love Resident Evil as a horror game. Not as a stupid Mainstream Action game. Every film and game goes more and more into action... how boring.
And yes, I know that many people think different, but I don't care.
I also loved RE4, but not as a Resident Evil but as an Action game with brainless killing and shooting (and a brainless Blondy that I have to protect).

I think she means Ashley. Leons hair isn't natrually blonde.

That reminds me of something.
I really hate the new Chris. He looked different in every RE, but now Capcom has killed the whole character. His hair and face look completely different, his voice and acting and this muscles are completely overdone.
But even more I hate the fact that Wesker and Chris will fight each other (the blonde hair reminded me of Wesker). Because I expect that Capcom will let Chris win and kill Wesker, and I really hope that this won't happen, and if it has to happen, I really hope that Wesker won't get some laughable crappy death.
He really doesn't deserve such thing, but Capcom messed up the whole game and characters already. I mean, Chris doesn't look much more older, but Wesker looks like 60 or something...

I agree with Stranga-Chan. Re4 imo just hit the dumps (it literally did at one point sorry very bad pun) but the horror just left that game.. sure I jumped cause I don't like things jumping out at me...

You have no real survival needs.. just to save a blonde who can't climb down a bloody ladder.. but can climb up one?

Any who about Re5 itself.. it seems pretty impressive (especially since it brings one of my fav chars back into play) but if it has the Merchant from Re4 then I quit! I will play the game through once but then it be so lame and annoying just like Re4 turned out for me.

I kinda liked the Merchant to be honest, but it would be a mistake to have him return.
My primary concern is the armament available. I always used to be able to play through with the knife in RE games but it was a lot more difficult to do so in RE4 because of the massive amounts of foes. All I want is to either give us more melee weapons, or another bolt-action.
