Dani Mcsloughtenburger: Well. There's three races, and they've got different color combinations for hair / eyes / skin, and different combat specialities.
Dani Mcsloughtenburger: Combat isn't much of an issue in AW, since it's a tactics / puzzle game, but you're required to select a class at the beginning, and certain classes can only be certain races.

Dani Mcsloughtenburger: Serpent's devided into two sections: urban and rural.
Dani Mcsloughtenburger: This is dictated by the landscape, and how Serpents evolved to suit it.
Dani Mcsloughtenburger: Serpent has the harshest environment of the twelve areas-- it's entirely desert, and a good 60 % of it is solid rock that is never touched by sun.
Dani Mcsloughtenburger: Urban Serpents are those that live in the constant night.
Dani Mcsloughtenburger: They originally lived underground, but they grew fast enough technologically to enable them to move to the harsh aboveground.
Mifmemo Kinro: men are rare
Dani Mcsloughtenburger: Serpents live in HUGE cities powered by magic. Serpents are the spellcasting class, so even ones who can't use magic are still magically capable-- that is, they're capable of using the gaseous magical energy that covers the world, so while they can't concentrate it into spells, they can use technology that requires the energy.

Dani Mcsloughtenburger: When Serpents first went aboveground, they almost went extinct because of the environment and most Serpents at the time were made infertile by accidental radiation poisoning.

Dani Mcsloughtenburger: To counter this, they invented an artificial womb that could create children without the use of eggs and sperm (instead, using blood and converting it into stem cells) but it has a tendency to make women more often than men.
Dani Mcsloughtenburger: After using this solely to breed for a few hundred years, the male-to-female ratio's REALLY screwed up.
Dani Mcsloughtenburger: However, male Rural Serpents occur just as often as female.

Dani Mcsloughtenburger: Rural Serpent's the total opposite of Urban Serpent: it's the populated areas on the northern side of the continent, where it not only gets sun, but they can have up to 20 hours of daylight for most of the year.

Dani Mcsloughtenburger: Their casting capabilities are slightly weaker than those of an Urban Serpent, but they're still FAR superior to other races.

Dani Mcsloughtenburger: They're basically the rich people. Urban Serpents can't survive well in hot areas, so they really can't make their own food. As such, organic foods are REALLY expensive in Serpent, and Rural Serpents make a killing supplying the colder areas.

Dani Mcsloughtenburger: All Serpents have any shade of gray eyes, and can have all shades of blue and shades of gray from midtone to white for hair. Urban Serpents' skin is transparent, but they have a layer of fine, white hairs that make their skin appear white or gray and make it feel very soft.
Dani Mcsloughtenburger: Because of lack of proper nutrition, Urban Serpents are shorter than other races, have softer features due to a small amount of retained fat, and age slower.
Dani Mcsloughtenburger: Urban Serpents retain magic at all times as a way to combat the cold.
Dani Mcsloughtenburger: If they move to warmer areas without spending their exess magical energy, they are at risk for severe heat stroke.
Dani Mcsloughtenburger: Rural Serpents are pretty different. They have the same hair / eyes from common ancestry, but their hair's coarser and curlier to fight the sun, and their skin is darker and lacks the hairs. They can grow to normal height, and don't have the heat-retaining features that Urban Serpents do.
Dani Mcsloughtenburger: Old Serpent (or, to Serpents, Sscziifio) is the national language, but it's more because of their stubbornness. They don't NEED to use it, and all Serpents know the common language (Syeskian), they're just very prideful people who see everything they didn't invent as inferior.
Dani Mcsloughtenburger: So, signs, TV, and books are all printed in Old Serpent, but everyone just speaks Syeskian.

Red mages are a combination of a white mage and a black mage. However, unlike a straight-up white / black mage, they can only cast spells of their type. So, offensive red mages can't cast any defensive white or black spells, and vice versa.
