[.::. Four Eyed Butterfly Fish .::.] Butterfly fish are small, thin, disc-shaped, colourful fish. These fish are only 5-8 inches long and are marked by dark lines through the eyes and near the tail. They have distinctive pointed noses or snouts. Yellow, white and black are the most common colours found in the butterfly fish.
There are 4 major kinds of butterfly fish: the four-eyed, the spotfin, the banded and the reef. The four-eyed butterfly fish is the most common of them all. It is pale yellow with a dark eye band. The large dark spot on the tail confuses the predator into thinking that the fish has two heads and allows the fish to escape
Butterfly Fish fall under Chaetodontidae, a family of reef-dwelling tropical fish. The family also includes the angelfish, spadefish and the tangs.
These vibrant fish can be found in tropical waters among the reef throughout the world. The young fish inhabit the shallow areas like a grass bed or a shallow reef where potential food sources like algae can grow.
Their habitats range along the North and South American coasts from Massachusetts to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. They have been observed to be common in Indo-Pacific regions. Lakshadweep (India) is known to have a large variety of butterfly fish. Butterfly fish tend to pair up with their mates early in life.
Butterfly fish are omnivores.and they feed on crabs and barnacles They use their pointed snouts to pluck out small coral animals and their compressed bodies allow them to enter small crevices for tiny invertebrates which they feed on.
