i hate talking about politics, but what do you guys think of the run for the '08 presidential seat so far? i personally hope obama wins. and i think that it was super-slick of mccain to add palin to his ticket. i have a feeling that he's banking on all the clinton supporters to roll with him now that he's got a female on his side.

politics is such a dirty game. i wish we didn't have to think about it so much...

I suppose it is the blessing and curse of being an American.

I'm thinking that the country is not yet ready for a non-white President. I keep thinking that as a nation we have moved forward so much, but at the same time, I don't believe we have gained that much ground. (Try to think of some of the horrible things that have happened within the past few years which were race related.)

This is not a pessimistic, but a realistic point of view.

Obama's accepting the Democratic nomination is a step in the right direction; it lets people know, "Hey, this could be for real." I think it's great preparation for a non-white President, but I'm doubtful that it will be Obama.

McCain is what the country is used to, (more or less); a "familiar face" that we can feel "safe" about having plastered on every news channel, and seen around the world to represent the United States. And the fact that his choice for VP is female gets the nation ready to accept a woman in such a position, which would (depending on her performance), open up a huge opportunity for the country to accept a female President.

The gender and race issues are just as important as what both candidates are promising if they win. It's a tough choice. At least when they were all white and male, the decision was less about looks and stereotypes and more about competency and efficiency and how each person could be expected to perform once in office. (Of course there was always - and will always be - religious and moral issues for us to pick at, whether race or gender are issues or not.)

As of right now, I remain undecided.

I've been paying more attention to politicis lately. No, I don't watch religiously every single thing that involves politics, but I do watch enough to get a basic idea of what's going on with things. I truly want Obama to win. For me, it's not just about race (though I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a small factor). I just don't see how an old guy who is already set in his ways (McCain) can possibly bring about positive changes to the country. I think a guy who's well into the retirement age is only going to have his own self interests in office. As for Obama, I do wish he had picked Clinton as his VP (it would have guaranteed more votes for him, I believe), but at the same time I think I know why he didn't do it. They don't really seem to like each other, and are only being cordial in public. I can tell from how they interact, body language and such.

One thing I don't care for about politics is how people spend so much time attacking each other than talking about the issues. Obama and his group have done it for sure, but McCain and his group have done it more. It's annoying.

OMG, I was just saying that the other day! I tuned in for the Republican National Convention, and after ten minutes turned away because the man who was speaking barely even once in that whole ten minute span talked about what his party is doing/going to do; he spent the whole time Obama/Demo-bashing. It was ridiculous. What a waste of time. At least contrast the the Reps and Dems, rather than outright bad-mouthing the other party/ticket. Totally effin lame, one-sided, and wasteful. stare

There's obviously a reason behind it: these conventions and public speeches are merely pep rallies. They bad-mouth the other party and the audience cheers. They finally get around to telling us their plans for the country and the audience cheers.

I think the best way to become informed is not by actually listening to these speeches, but by reading reviews about them, or reviewing (evaluating) them yourself, preferably against someone else's evaluation of the speech. Message boards, blogs, magazine articles -- those are the best way to go, because unfortunately, you can't trust what comes out of the horse's mouth...Even if it sounds good then, upon further research it can turn out to amount to much less than what comes out the other end. confused

i totally agree, mudslinging is so low and childish. but then again, i think a large number of people don't really realize how important certain issues are. they only see how things affect them personally, they don't care about the rest of the country. also people like to see others fight and name-call. i wonder how long it'll take for the elections to go jerry springer style, with chair-throwing and all...

i've seen some reports on how the police have been out brutalizing protestors and others outside of the conventions. it looks crazy out there....

@ Passion_Dragon: Doesn't it suck how sometimes, to get information about a speech, you have to look everywhere else but at the actual speech? xd

@ lunamoon999: I can understand why many people may not care about the issues affecting the whole country as much as their own personal world(s). It's hard to focus on the issues of the wealthy and businesses when you're constantly wondering how to keep gas in your vehicle. xd

I have been very interested in politics this time and I wouldn't be if Obama wasn't running. If he doesn't win I'm seriously thinking about leaving the country because I refuse to go down with a ship, especially after McCain dies and Palin takes over. That woman doesn't know what the Bush Doctrine is and had problems recalling McCain's. Look at the track record of those 2 people and you'll realize that they would be horrible people to run this country. The whole Mc-Palin drama is so unreal I can't believe that anyone other than the most brainwashed would accept their BS.

Hopefully many of us are tuning in to watch the debate tonight. 3nodding The fact that there was consideration for postponing it makes me want to watch it even more than before. biggrin

And who do you all think won? All I know is I am moving out of the country if McCain wins....there is no way I can get poorer than I already am.

i didn't really mean the rest of the country, i guess. i meant like people only caring about what happens in their homes, not realizing that the dirty things happening in their towns can affect their home and lifestyle. you know? neutral

Did anyone watch the vp debates? I watched it with people in my dorm and we all agreed that most of what Palin said was either bs or false. How are people falling for that?!

This election is what made me give up politics. If you remember me from before you know that I am a very political person but i started to think about no matter who wins eventually they will do something that I will disagree with.
