I'm starting this as a companion thread to the movie adaptation threads.
I know there have been several TV series based on books. The most recent I know of are Bones, The Dresden Files, and Blood Ties. I also know HBO is coming out with a series based on the Southern Vampire series by Charlaine Harris this fall (drat that I don't subscribe to HBO). Does anyone know of any others? What did you think of the adaptations? What about liberties the show may have taken with the book characters? Discuss.

Does The World of Beatrix Potter count? I believe that was a TV series (or maybe it was just a series of very short films).
Let's see ... I actually liked the 90's cartoon shows based off of comic books, such as Spiderman, Batman, and X-Men. Doing any comic book adaptation is difficult, since many of the mainstream ones have been around for decades. The number of different comics writers and storylines create a problem when trying to "keep it close to the book," as does the challenge of making them suitable for little kids. All things considered, though, I think those shows did a decent job keeping the feel of the original stories, and presenting the basics to my generation. wink

James Patterson's Women's Murder Club is the one I watch on occasion. It's a dissappointment to the book, I think.
And wasn't Nikita a book? I've never read it, if it is, but the show is really good. :3

Fairgrass Does The World of Beatrix Potter count? I believe that was a TV series (or maybe it was just a series of very short films). I don't see why not. I'd also count the adaptations I've seen in cartoon form (on PBS) of the Redwall series. Very nice, those. I believe Brian Jacques had a hand in them.

Although it hasn't been green-lighted (I think) HBO was going to do an adaptation of George R R Martin's A Game of Thrones. Because those are some of my favorite books, that is kind of exciting but also likely to be a let down. In general movies/shows from books just don't do justice to the book (to me anyways).

Gossip Girl.
I haven't read the books, but the show is ridiculous and from what my sister has told me the show is nothing like the books.

I love the adaptation of the Redwall series (technically it is the adaptation of only three books - Redwall, Mattimeo and Martin of Redwall - one for each season). I'm a big fan of those books. heart
I have to say I am slightly surprised that The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes have not yet been mentioned. I believe that there have been several adaptations of the famous detective, but one that I know was particularly well-done was the series produced by Granada Television, with Jeremy Brett as Holmes. It is a very faithful adaptation.

Darth_Magus1 the Sherlock Holmes series with Jeremy Brett was great..just trying to find it on dvd. My dad got the full DVD set (12 DVD's!) as a Christmas gift for my mom in 2007, I believe he got it from amazon.ca/com, and it is definitely available from there. Expensive though...
Edit: I just thought of another television series, based on the characters in a series of crime dectective books by Caroline Gramham called the Chief Inspector Barnaby series. As a television series it is called Midsomer Murders, and originally aired on British tv. Although I haven't read or seen any of the books, the shows are quite marvelous. Most are simply based on the characters of the novels, although a few of the actual novels have been adapted. They seem to be doing rather well with the series too: since it started in 1997, and continues to air new seasons.
Second edit: It seems that British television does a lot of adaptations from novels. Another series from BBC Scotland called Hamish MacBeth is based on a series of novels by the same name, written by Marion Chesney under the pseudonym M. C. Beaton. Again I have not read the books (although I do want to), but the series was excellant. It starred Robert Carlyle in the lead role, which just made it so much better to me. heart It was a shorter lived series (only three seasons - I'm not really sure of the reasons), but good all the same.

Well, I know the BBC adapted a few of the Narnia novels, but I don't know if those were aired as series or one-shot movies. I know there was The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and The Silver Chair.

This might not count, but I used to watch a show called Wishbone. It was hosted by this boy's dog who loved to read and every week they did a half hour adaptation of a particular book. My favorite was "Pantin' at the Opera" (Phantom of the Opera).

I always loved that show! There are several books I have read, where I knew the story because of Wishbone. Kidnapped, Journey to the Center of the Earth and Beowolf are three in particular.
