Do you prefer longer two handed weapons like Bo katana etc, or shorter one handed weapons like kamas and knifes? Personally, My favorite weapon is the bo, and Nothing beats range in a fight...(guns count as range so no comments about that)

Is say a knife because my knowledge of the arteries. The knife offense I learned could be fatal very easily, and is barley any stabbing (stabbing can slow one down, and the knife could get stuck so you could loose it and be weaponless). If there was a fight against a knife and a bo, sure the bo has range, but if the person with the knife can get so close that a bo would be a very difficult weapon to use.

Haven't you already done a thread like this? But asked the question slightly differently...

erm... does the knife refer to a dagger or a broadsword? Because in my kung fu class we refer to the dao as a 'knife'. I like long, one-handed weapons like the dao and jian but I also like the bo staff.

DarklingGlory Haven't you already done a thread like this? But asked the question slightly differently... *thinks for a moment* I think my other one was about unusual weapons, now i am refering to weapons i personally know about and am familiar with. The other asked about weapons you learn in your style this is more what do you actually like to use. For example I do katana, but i hate it with a passion and find it to my worst weapon. IN honesty I typically say i prefer range becuase i like the staff and do believe range rocks a battle, but in a real fight I would probaly pprefer short weapons especially kamas. If i have made two topics that are too much alike. Then someone can delte it, just let me know you are doing it. My firend and I have been discussing weapons and practicality, that is why i have made weapon topics.

Well, quick tip, if we ever get in a fight with weapons, distract me by bringing this up. cheese_whine dramallama ninja

If there was a fight against a knife and a bo, sure the bo has range, but if the person with the knife can get so close that a bo would be a very difficult weapon to use. Not trying to be an a**, but why? Just about every knife instruction I have witnesses holds the opposite to be true, cuts and slashes don't kill, stabs and thrusts do. Fairbairn and Sykes concluded that the most destructive attacks with a blade are thrusts to the carotid artery, and to the heart and branch of the femoral artery in the stomach. Loss of consciousness is 5 seconds on the carotid, to instantaneous on the heart or femoral. Death would occur shortly thereafter, but up to 12 seconds with a cut to the carotid artery. Slashing the brachial artery (on the inside of the upper arm just above the elbow) could take up to 14 seconds to cause loss of consciousness and up to a minute and a half to be fatal. Again, not trying to start a flame war, I'm just curious why you feel that way? If that's the way you wanna go, have fun, don't let me tell you no, just keep training and stay safe. I am quite fond of the P'kal grip with a real nice 3 1/2" Wharnecliffe edge. Hold the blade with the blade facing down from the bottom of your hand, and with the edge facing your wrist. Similar motion to a hammerfist, stab in, and cut your way out. But a nice saber grip with a longer blade, say a 4.5 to 5.5" tanto edge, or pure clip point. Makes sinewali real fun, insert some punta and enjoy. As far as my preferred weapon? Anything I can put to hand. be it towel, rope, stick, chair, magazine, fork, pen, shirt, shoe, whatever. But as ranges go, I prefer to be right on top of the skel, I can control his motion, not have to chase him etc. So shorter weapons are, I guess the first thing I look for, followed by ones I can conceal/carry.

Well Kempo is a Shaolin martial art, so it is against our nature to kill, only get rid of an opponents ability. That's why one of the main hits is at the right shoulder to cut all of the tendons. Also, I was taught that if you stab, there is a chance that the knife could get caught (say you go for the ribs), and ones opponent would get the knife.

If i was stabbed in the ribs i dont think my first reaction would be "oh good now i have the weapon!" though. You could always stab for the stomach if you were going to stab. Not condoning stabbing in anyway though xd

Kudos to you for training how you believe and having a strong moral code.
Problems do set in with the "cut to injure" as they do with the "shoot to injure" ideology. Most states recognize the knife as a deadly weapon, therefore any legal action taken with a knife must, by necessity, be taken when in a deadly force scenario. Less, and you risk becoming the perpetrator of assault with a deadly weapon, which is a felony.
But for the great majority of us, its a purely academic debate, as I have never needed to use my knives, nor do I know anyone whom has. (outside of those serving in the military during a time of war)
So yes, I do tend to think overkill when I am training with the blades, but I want to make sure, that if I must, I can make damn sure that the other jerkoff has indeed had his birth certificate revoked before he revokes mine. But I guess thats where I digress from the more urbane and polite realm of the martial arts.

Ooh! I also like the guandao (It would probably be my first prefrence).
I'm not too fond of a normal knife (dagger) though, doesn't have any range and I don't like to get so close.

My friend, a black belt at a different Tang soo do do jang, has extreme tolerance to pain and was trained that in the event a knife is thrust at him. he catches it throuugh his hand, takes it, and you can figure out the rest. I am not sure it would work, but if it does stabbbing at him would suck for you.

Thru the hand? Interesting... And if someone shoots a gun at him, he tries to catch the bullet between his teeth?

I personally prefer 2-handed weapons more, since they generally have a longer range, and if necessary you can use them one-handed long enough to dispatch anyone who gets too close.
