I need a nice bass for about 300$
its for a friend
I want something with a nice growl and a deep dark tone
I was thinking something like a epiphone thunderbird

That what I'd do if I had to go new, but you're more likely to find much better used stuff.

Would the position of the pickup give it a more dull,bass-y tone than a growl.

You're not gonna find much with good growl for $300, but I dig a warmer tone, so I dig humbuckers in the neck position.

One of those should probably do you well. Especially the Peavy, since it is active.
