Adrian was sitting in his apartment, on his couch with the tv on, not really watching it. He was in a pair of pj pants and his hair was in braids and ribbons. He wasn't going anywhere, so there was no reason to get dressed. He sighed and stretched out, taking a sip of soda (he stopped drinking beer after the incident over a month ago).
He was thinking about a certain unicat, who's birthday had been a few days ago. The rat wondered if Carlos had gotten the birthday card Adrian sent him. He didn't sign it so there was a chance that Carlos had no idea he had sent it, but he was still curious. He couldn't risk calling the unicat, since he doubted Carlos wanted to hear from him directly.

Carlos was not the type who would force someone to change themselves as a person. On the other hand, he did not want Adrian to hurt anyone else. Horea's voice would not return unless they could find a surgeon who specialized in his kind of injury... His own father would not hold out hope for Adrian and advised him not to either. And he wasn't biased or anything, ha ha, but it did nothing to help or hinder his resolve. If Adrian wanted to change, he would... and if he wouldn't, well... the unicat was not really sure 'what then.' He tried not to think about it; it made him weak in the knees just to think about it.
He had been doing his best to keep his mind off of it, and failing for the most part. What could be expected though, being separated from his boyfriend for a whole year only to be separated again? When he was away from home he did bizarre things to get his mind off of Adrian, like build a monster truck with a complete stranger. But as soon as he made it home, he invariably moped about, no matter how much fun he had had during the day.
Well, today he was doing something a little different. He had gotten this mysterious birthday card in the mail... It was not signed, but who knew about that day outside of his household? And the return address was one he did not recognize, so he had a hunch. If it was Adrian (and it definitely sounded like him)... why would he put his address on it if he did not want Carlos to find him? That was his excuse anyway. He wanted to know who sent him the card. And there was only one way to find out.
The unicat stood on the street looking up at the apartment complex. This must be it... He started toward the building and hesitated. What if it wasn't Adrian? What if... if it was him and he did not really want to see him?

Adrian turned and looked out the window, tired of facing the tv. The view from his window was good incase someone was coming to see him. He could see people coming down the sidewalk. The rat sat up fast and blinked a few times. He could have sworn he just saw Carlos, but that's not possible, since the unicat didn't know where he lived.
He shook his head, brushing it off as just another hallucination. Adrian moved to the other side of the couch, so he couldn't see the window anymore. He was tired of seeing Carlos everywhere, when the unicat wasn't actually there.

Carlos had finally worked up the courage, despite his doubts, to approach the apartment. Standing outside the door, he raised his fist up to the surface and hesitated. Just do it, he told himself firmly and did... the rapping sound of his knuckles seemed a lot more confident than he felt. As he waited for a response, he rolled up the card in his hands nervously.

Adrian stood up when he heard the knock on his door. 'Who would come see me? Probably a stupid salesperson or something, no one important,' he thought as he headed over, not even bothering to get decent. He opened the door. "How can I..." Adrian froze when he saw Carlos standing there. "It's not possible..." he mumbled, staring at Carlos.

Carlos' eyes widened immensely. As the door started to open he had hidden most of his face behind the card. "So it was you!" He smiled a little to himself and turned the card over to show it to the rat. "I came to thank whoever it was that made this card for me... I'm glad it was you, Adrian."

Adrian's eyes widened. "You're really here." He didn't know what else to say at that moment. The rat shook his head to clear is mind. "How do you know it was me that sent the card, and not someone using my address?" Stupid, stupid question, he knew it, but asked it anyways.

"Oh... well I didn't know where you lived, I don't think you ever told me," Carlos chuckled lightly. "Um, actually it was right here on the card," he said, pointing to a phrase written there, "where you said you 'can't believe you're doing this'... that made me think it was you." He grinned broadly at Adrian. "But like I said, I was coming to say 'thank you' to whoever it was that made it. I don't usually get stuff like this..."
Honestly, if it wasn't Adrian, the only others he could think of that might do such a thing - send him a card, let alone a homemade one - would be... maybe his mother or brothers? But... yeah... why would they bother?
Wiping tears from his eyes (which he had not realized were there), he rushed to the rat and hugged him. "Thank you."

Adrian sighed. "Yeah, it was me, okay. I couldn't not do something for your birthday, even if you did hate me still." He hugged the unicorn back, akwardly. It was at this point he realized that he was hugging Carlos, just wearing pj pants with his hair in braids, which were tied off with rainbow colored ribbons. The rat quickly pulled away. "Would you like to come in, while I go put some clothes on?"

"I don't hate you," the unicat mumbled against Adrian's chest. "Horea might hate you, but I don't." When the rat pulled away he let go reluctantly, but brightened when he was invited inside. "I'd love to come in!" He had actually half-expected Adrian to shoo him outside or make him leave...

"I'm sorry about that. Is he going to be okay?" Adrian asked. He was slightly worried about Horea. "Your dad hates me too, doesn't he?" That's another thing the rat was worried about. If Carlos' dad hates him, then Adrian has no chance with Carlos again, even if the unicat still wants him.

"Um, well... probably..." Carlos slunk inside the door and glanced around. He was not sure what to say. He blinked, noticing Adrian's hair for the first time. "Hey! Your hair's been braided again!" Who was it that did it last time and made the rat so mad? He couldn't remember. Of course, he also couldn't know that they were Adrian's ribbons and that he actually liked having his hair braided, on some level. "You know you don't have to change if you don't want. I don't mind," he grinned.

"Probably to Horea being okay, or your dad hating me?" It was important! The rat honestly didn't know which question that was an answer to. "Uh, yeah, it is." Adrian said, messing with one of the braids. "I think it would be better if I changed and got decent."

"Er... well Horea will probably be okay." But he was not going to discuss the conditions for that unless he absolutely had to. This wasn't supposed to be anything but a nice visit... His tail swished with mild anxiety. "I don't think my dad hates anybody..." He watched Adrian play with one of the braids and tugged at his own oversized, fluffy ear. "Well, it's up to you of course. I didn't mean to impose..."

"I hope he gets well soon." A month ago, Adrian wouldn't have been caught dead saying that, but a lot has changed. The rat snorted. "I bet he hates me." He started moving towards the back of his apartment. "I'll be right back, you're welcome to make yourself at home. There's some drinks if the fridge, help yourself." The rat continued back into his room to change.
