It hadn't been long since the news that her granddaughter was expecting children had reached the dark mare's ears. Of course, this was all a rather--unexpected surprise to say the least. Not long ago she had found out that her son Imrikalto was expecting as well. So all of it thrown at her at once left Firefly for a whirl.

All of reality had come and smacked her across the face at once. Her children and her children's children were no longer little foals. No. They were all full fledged adults and had gone off to start families of their own. This thought made her feel old. Much older than she should have been feeling at this point and time in her life.

Cest la vie.

After having parted from her mate for a bit, Firefly wandered her forested home until she came upon her favorite meadow to graze in. Dark red eyes peered about for any company that might have been around. And in finding none she ventured out into the late summer afternoon.

Fall would be here soon. She should enjoy the cooler temperatures before the cold got too extreme even for her to be out and about in.

Ever since Dragonfly had left the herd, Damselfly had felt quite distressed. He had left in such a hurry and in such a crazy that she greatly feared for his safety. Some might of called her crazy for sticking around with him. He was so harsh and set in his ways that some would often see him as quite...aggressive.

But Damselfly knew better. She had, in time, seen a more softer side to her mate. A caring, troubled side that worried constantly. Though he saved face to others around him. Keeping that rough exterior up. As the leader of the herd he felt that if he showed any weakness, any softness, it would be used against him.

Not soon after their son had taken off after him in search. And it had been weeks with no word from either. Which caused the older mare to be quite disturbed. If something happened to either of them--she'd not know what to do. And so she left the safety of the herd in the dark of night. They would likely come after her, but she wanted to make sure for herself that her mate and son were well. And--if it happened to turn out, find her daughter and granddaughter as well.

She moved through the forest like a ghost. Strange sounds startling her, but she made not a sound. Keeping her lips buttoned less she wish to give away her presence. And soon the forest opened up upon a meadow. The afternoon sun shinning through the golden green grass brought a smile to her lips. These lands were quite different from their home and yet beautiful all the same.

It was in that moment that her red eyes lay upon a dark figure. Black and silver hair. The same stripes beneath her eyes and the red eye marking on her shoulder. Had the gods blessed her for once this day? "Firefly..." Her voice was barely above a whisper. The mare had always been soft spoken and a bit demure. Quite the opposite of her mate and children.

Her head snapped straight up from grazing as the soft, familiar voice suddenly came out of now where. Dark red eyes turning to gaze upon the rose gray dapple mare that stood not too far away from her.

Ears flicked back as she swallowed her mouthful of grass. It was a little hard to swallow actually as the other mare had caught her in surprise. And what a surprise it was.

Firefly had never seen her mother away from her father's herd. In all actuality, she believed her mother had always been apart of that herd since she was born. Just like her father. But neither talked much about their earlier years. "M-mother?" She blinked her eyes a couple times. Waiting to see if the figure standing there would vanish as quickly as it came. But after quite a few blinks the image didn't leave.

"Is...is father with you?" The dark mare had been quite cautious lately. She knew how her father was. Traditions ran thick through his mind. He had even stolen Dafina away from her just to uphold the herd's 'traditions'. Because she had failed him in all aspects and run off. Staring a new life in a new place outside the herd. And mating with an unapproved stallion. But she didn't care. Firefly didn't want to live by these strict traditions of the herd. She wanted to live her own life without worries and be care free as much as possible.

Damselfly frowned lightly.

Dragonfly...

It had been a long time since she had last seen him. And he was the main reason why she had left the herd in the first place. Shaking her head, her braids beating against the side of her neck. The dappled mare took a few, tentative steps forward. Not quite sure where her standing with her daughter was at the moment. She had done nothing to stop Dragonfly from kidnapping her daughter. Her--granddaughter. She was not as strong or assertive as him and so often she tried not to meddle in his affairs.

But still it had been wrong. And if she had been a stronger Soquili. A stronger mother and grandmother perhaps there would of been a different outcome. And perhaps not as much tension between them all. But she was just too demure. "No, your father is not with me. He's--the reason I've come out here. Dragonfly ran away not long after you had taken back Dafina. I'm afraid for him. For the herd." Eyes cast down to look at the ground as if what she had said shamed her. She knew the feelings between her mate and her daughter. And they were not great ones.

A small sigh passed through her lips. A sigh of relief really. She couldn't stand her father sometimes. And after the pain he had caused her recently, her ability to tolerate him had worn thin.

"Why would you be afraid for him? He seems perfectly capable of taking care of himself." Her words were sharp and probably would hit her mother deep. To Firefly, Damselfly was nothing more than a subservient little mare who never stood up for herself. Never made her own decisions. She loved her mother. Dearly. But sometimes she could never understand why she tolerated her way of living like she did. Why couldn't she do things without her father?

An eyebrow lifted as she tilted her head just slightly. Long hair trailing across her back and down her shoulders. "The only reason? Are you so dependent of him that when he leaves for a long time you have to follow like some dog? Why do you live such a life mother? Aren't you strong enough to do things on your own? Without him?" Her voice wavered slightly as she felt a stinging sensation at the corners of her eyes.

A look of pain washed over the old mares face at her daughter's harsh words. Eyes closed as she drew her chin in towards her chest. Ears flattening briefly against her delicate skull. "Because that is what I do. I worry about him. Just as I worry about you, your brother....the entire herd if need be. I'm a worrier Firefly, you know that. And if someone didn't worry no one would come to find the lot of you."

Her long tail moved gently in a breeze that ruffled the braids of her mane as well. Red eyes slipping open to look upon the dark face of her daughter. It had been so long since Damselfly had seen her that she had almost forgotten what Firefly looked like. She was older since the last time they saw each other truly, which was the night before Firefly had run away.

She wanted to go to her. To hold her and tell her to come home. Beg with her to come home with her. But she knew that it would never come to be. Firefly would never return. Even if she was dragged back, her daughter would find a way to escape. Or others would come looking for her.

It brought pain to the older mare's heart that their family was so torn and burnt around the edges by traditions and anger. This wasn't the life for her family she wanted. But its what the spirits had handed her. And all she could do was sit by and try to defuse any ticking time bombs.

"Its not the only reason I'm out here, Firefly." Her voice went soft once again. "I told you, I worry about you as well. Its been so long since I've seen you and it...it breaks my heart that all this has driven you away from me. I haven't even been able to enjoy my own grandchildren from you. And I'm sure there are great grandchildren by now as well."

Firefly had expected the look of pain that had come to her mother's face. But it seemed to effect her a little bit more than she had predicted it would. Ears flicked back as she lowered her eyes a moment. Staring at the ground as her mother spoke. Her tail moving back and forth gently as she watched a late summer lady bug scuttle across her hoof.

The dark mare had blocked her heart from her family for so long. There were times in the past where she often thought of just going home. Returning to what her life had been. But over time those feelings had washed away. She had a family of her own, here and now. And she could never just up and abandon them like that. She had been taught better.

She could have cared less how the distance between them all effected her father. As for her mother, she knew the older mare must of wept long. Broken hearted. Damselfly had always been the emotional one out of her parents. When she and her brother were younger they had come across a bird, dead, laying in the grass and when her mother came to see what they were looking at she cried. For days she cried over that poor bird. For no reason at all except that a life had been taken from the world.

Dark red eyes snapped upward as she locked her gaze with her mothers. Those soft eyes staring back at her with so much pain and anguish she almost had to break her gaze. "Then blame my father for your pain. Not me. I never wanted the life that he had so easily planned out for me without telling me. Trying to force traditions on me that even I did not believe in. Blame him if you must blame someone."
