So, School has started for many of us and I'm curious as to what everyone is taking this year. And activities count as well. (Science Olympiad, math olympiad, knowledge bowl ect.)

I'm a senior in high school and taking Calc. 3 and doing an independant study for taking the AP Physics exam. (didn't have room in my schedule for AP physics so I'm in normal physics instead for the credit)
And I'm also doing TARC, Science Olympiad, and Knowledge bowl.

So, discuss: Your science and math classes, are they any fun? Got a cruddy teacher? Need help of any kind? Do you think you'll ever need the class's content in life? Opinion on your respective educational system, and how far up your school offers classes. Also, any tips for going through particular classes?

I personally dislike my Educational system, it's pretty beauracratic, and not the best learning enviornment. I also dis-like "prepairment" classes such as pre-algebra and pre-calculus, I feel it's classes such as these that are holding back many kid's potential in subject areas, and such classes can in-fact hurt kids more than help, if it's to easy or just funky to understand, kid's will often just give-up and not continue in that direction of study...
Or atleast that's what I think anyway. My school offers up to AP physics and AP bio for science classes, and my school offers up to Calculus 3(and perhaps differential equations if we can get it) in math.(there's 13 of in it, so they added it as a class this year through CU denver, so we get college credits, but are taking the class in school)

I would say our school is a little below average when it comes to learning and succeeding. Many kids in our school struggle, and I don't blame them. The teachers teach us the complicated way, instead of making it simple.

Yeah the same thing happened in my middle school....teachers (no matter how nice) being unable to teach, and/or not understanding the basis of the material themselves.
so does this mean that your school suffers from the idealogy of "prepairment" classes as well?

Sometimes these kinds of things make me want to go to finland for school...I believe they have the best, or second best, educational system in the world if I'm not mistaken. That and it's also the Metal capital of the world. mrgreen

Well I don't really know what prepairment is (I'm not that much of a vocab whiz) but I am assuming that you are talking about AP Classes. In that case, no, they don't do that well with AP. I have 5 of them (The won't let me take 6 xp ) and they are all pretty easy. The seem like normal level classes in my opinion.

I think it has more to do with teachers, unless a student really really likes the subject. I almost hatched an insane plan to escape a math class. It was boring uninteresting, plus the teacher refused to answer any question unless you were a jail bait girl or your parents were rich.

My freshman physical science teacher had the brain of a 16 year old and spent most of her time text messaging her friends in class. and any time she got bored she just showed movies from the 90's and held up class for 3 days.

But then there are the good ones, like most of my middle school science teachers who had odd physical or mental problems but kept things interesting having us do some fun experiments.

Quoting my Organic chem lab prof:

"If any of you are afraid of math, I'm going to point you to the social sciences."

...I love how that guy is always so blunt xd

But yeah. Science needs a lot of math. It's a bit annoying how one needs some chemistry to understand biology, some physics to understand chemistry, and math to understand physics (and stats, which you need for experiments and some other aspects of science anyway).

I sort of like math. I love it when I understand it, but the learning process can be a b***h sometimes. I'm taking a multivariable calculus class right now in which I'm getting mediocre marks, mainly because the midterms for that class always land on days where I have a midterm for another class, and with the Calc prof giving us a "100% final" at the end, well...guess which class always gets put on the back burner? sweatdrop

Other than that, I'm taking some organic chem (class + lab) and human anatomy. I haven't had any problems with any of my profs or classes yet so far. Well, one was dropped, so it doesn't count anymore biggrin

As for my opinion on the educational system, I think the government should get the hell out of it. (I think the government should get out of a lot of things.)

I'm taking Biology, Chemistry and Physics next year for my AS levels (Britaaaiin)
People think I'm rather insane for doing three sciences, but they're seriously my favourite subjects, as well as Art.

At my school we have AP, HP, and CP. AP is Advanced Placement, HP is Honors Puhsomethingorother, and CP is College Prep. AP and HP are the higher levels of classes (haha, how caste-ish xp ) and CP is kind of the average/normal level. Remedial at my school.. well, that'd be redundant to explain. I'm sure you all already know it, it's pretty much the same at all schools.
Maybe all the other high schools out there are like mine, I don't know. *shrug*
Well, I'm taking Algebra 2 HP and Chemistry HP. My Chemistry teacher is rather basic with his explanations, and he clearly knows more than he's telling us but he cuts down on the talk due to time (i'm hoping..) My Math teacher is amazing, he's so Learned on the whole of Math it's wonderful! He tells us not only of the formulas mechanics and applications of the math, but of it's history! He is by far one of the best teachers I've ever been taught by.. it's great. My science teacher is interesting, and is also well learned in his field, but he's just a little awkward.. Ah well!

I'm a senior and I'm taking Calc AP and Astronomy. I now regret that I didn't take physics because it actually sounds like a lot of fun.
I love my teachers this year though, all of them.

My school has Ap Chemistry and Bio. Im not sure if it has Ap Physics. Part of the problem is that around this time of the year the teachers have to stop teaching their class and start teaching for what will be on TAKS, our standardized test. Since my math and science classes are above the normal level for my grade that mean the tachers have to reteach us what we learned last year.

My school has crap all. It's very frustrating. I'm at my last year and we don't have much choice when it comes to courses, we just have the option to take a co-op or an online class (but those are very poorly organized and our computers always have technical difficulties) instead of any class. But those don't look good on a university application, needless to say. :/ We only get the basic math classes, basic French (my school's French by the way. That's why we don't have anything. LOL), a mediocre English class, chemistry, bio and physics. It ends there. I wish we had advanced physics or something... xD

Well back in the age of Dinosaurs, xd
When I was in highschool, I didn't take much math classes, and to this day I suck at Algebra.
I took AP Physics and Statistics, and that exempted me from having to take any Algebra classes and I regret not taking them in highschool, becuase come college algebra I had to take it 3 times before I finally passed with a C. And that's that I went to afterclass touturing, and had study partners and study hours with friends. It was just so hard for me to comprehend, not to mention I'm borderline ADD so it' already hard for me to concentrte. I love science, but science and math go hand in hand. You can't get into the depth of what is truly sience without math.
I alway find Science fun and interesting, but Math always bores me.
And I find that Science teachers are more entertaining than Math teachers, alot of times I find Math teachers are really just talking to themselves and particularly with some of the Math teachers I've had, they expect you to keep up. Its hard to do so when one's background in Math is lousy.
I think the public general educational system is a failure, my particular school disctrict let me not take any algebra classes before graduating. My physics and statistics teacher babied us and did all our work for us and gave rediculous curves. So yeah I passed that, I tried physics at the college level and I couldn't even keep up the first week of class.

I have yet to take physics.. and I need to...
urgh.
yeah I need help with that.

I'm a college senior physics major. My school is on a trimester system, and this term I'm taking intro environmental studies, middle and secondary teaching methods, and advanced laboratory. Environmental studies is interesting, ad lab is hard as a b*tch but I love it! Self-driven, lots of great science, what more could you want??

The only good thing about methods is that I spend four hours every Thursday at a local high school observing and helping out with the classes I'll be student-teaching next spring.

My school offers many science and math classes ,but only three for freshmen. Those are Physical Science, Science Skills, and Biology. Although, next year, I wil finally no longer be a freshman, and I have signed up for:
Geology
Anatomy
Genetics
Microbiology
Botany
Zoology
Astronomy
